Whatever you buy you might want to beef up the suspension for the dirt roads down there.

boe4fun - 6-22-2010 at 08:41 AM

Hey Bob, Check your U2U - Paul and Shelley

DianaT - 6-22-2010 at 03:56 PM

Woody,

Good luck finding one and I hope it is a sturdy one for where you like to travel!

Enjoyed the one I had many years ago.

Hope the new home is working well for you.

woody with a view - 6-22-2010 at 04:41 PM

thanks guys. i've been dialed in to the "hobo" camping for years and now i am over dealing with the wind. not that i can't do it any more it's just time to upgrade my sitchiation some.... i don't want to go with a pop up camper because when i get to the "spot" i still like to explore and dropping the camper seems like too much hassle.

Woody,
With our Tundra we pulled a Casita Fiberglass Trailer and then had an Outfitter pop-top camper. Both cut down the gas mileage a lot and both were hard on the Tundra----mainly front brakes that were improved in the 2004 Tundra.

So keep whatever you get light----strong, but light!

woody with a view - 6-23-2010 at 11:20 AM

those Casitas are nice. i've been eyeing them. next time put ceramic pads on the front of the tundra's poorly designed braking system. they help ALOT.

look at coleman evolution E1.

problem with many pop-ups is they rattle apart on bad roads

Yep, saw some guy literally drag one into a camp in Central Baja one night and he didn't end up leaving with it. Needed major repairs. Definitely beef it up if you get one.

Cheapest late model tent trailer I found on CL San Diego that's not a hunk of junk.

KAT54 - 6-23-2010 at 06:37 PM

What is you budget?
How much?
How far will you drive?

you got a pick up truck, right?

take a box of kitchen supplies, a propane 2-burner stove and 5-gal propane bottle, walk in tent, folding tables/chairs, water in 5-gal jugs: you got yourself a camp! if you bring beach umbrellas you got shade!

pitch camp and you can drive away from it and explore all you want.

you won't find anything decent/rugged for under $5k, and one 60 mile trip over washboard will fully depreciate your $5k trailer

a good walk-in tent is much nicer than crappy old trailer bed.

those tiny little wheels and cheap cabinets won't endure a 30-mile washboard road

DENNIS - 6-23-2010 at 07:01 PM

Why are washboard roads a necessity?

W...geez...just gave away a almost new coleman tent trailer a couple of months ago....it was hardly ever used and was stored inside....don't think it would hold up too long tho, down in our region...AND...you can't tow a boat..which is the main reason we got rid of it.

gnukid - 6-23-2010 at 10:25 PM

woody with a view - 8-3-2010 at 04:09 PM

sounds like a challenge! everywhere is possible (maybe not the east road into juanico!) if you go slow enough.....

Dit you hit the "Post Reply" button? Or just go down to the quick reply. Quick reply doesn't have the stuff to post photos, only the "Post Reply" (or Quote)

woody with a view - 8-4-2010 at 04:03 PM

click reply and there's no browse.....

Russ - 8-4-2010 at 04:19 PM

Here ya go. I'd like to see your newest toy.
Hey I don't have a browse either! ! ! ! and I'm signed in:
I'll post this any way through PhotoBucket. But I know Woody already knows how to play.

woody with a view - 8-4-2010 at 04:22 PM

my work computer wont allow me to access fotobucket.

Russ - 8-4-2010 at 04:25 PM

I think I figured it out. "Baja Miscellaneous" doesn't allow you to add a photo?

DENNIS - 8-4-2010 at 04:57 PM

Could you just draw a little picture of it?

irenemm - 8-4-2010 at 05:08 PM

So if good things are at the end of a bad road I guess we won't be grading ours any more.
Remember woody with a view IT'S ABOUT THE BED at the end of the day.
If it rattles when your going down the road so your in the truck. take plenty of duct tape.
Enjoy your new adventure.
having fun is what it is all about.

I found the NEW 2010 Baja Model. Only $15k plus change. I like the dual axles.

Udo - 8-4-2010 at 06:45 PM

And you earlier thought that $7K was very expensive!

$15K for a pop-up trailer?:?:

I think you may mean $1.5K, huh:?:

Plus another $1,200 for solar...but remember...surfboard racks block the sunlight.

anyways..... i love it. yer just gonna have to wait until oct for pics when we go to BA for the big fish and keep our fingers crossed for a hurricane swell.......

The Sculpin - 8-5-2010 at 07:43 PM

Woody!! So glad you got a TT. That's all I used and we went everywhere in that thing! OK, you didn't ask for it, but here are a few tips - you probably know them already.
1. The axle is probably mounted on top of the springs. Flip it over and mount the springs on top of the axle. That will give you some good clearance right off the bat.
2. Spare tires are ridiculously hard to find at our average llantera - you will need your spare, and bring 2 more tires just in case.
3. Never fill the water tank (if oyu have one). A long trip on a dirt road will tear it off it's mounts and you'll end up with a crushing ball loose in your trailer. Same goes for septic - drain it before you leave.
4. To the extent you can, replace all screws with bolts and locking nuts. For the ones you can't, bring extras 'cuz they have a way of coming loose on the road.
5. Bring an extra set of axle bearings and axle grease. It's very possible to bend the axle on a rough road, which then increases the heat on the spindle and bends it, then disintegrates.
6. Bring plywood pieces, say 3'Wx5'L. It will help if you have to drag the trailer in sand or mud, and you can prop it up on the wind side of the trailer to keep the wind from rushing under the tent.
7. Get some good quality foam and use it to plug every entry point to the trailer - the electric plug, the water plug, any drains, the heater ducts - this is to prevent the damn moon dust from getting in while driving. There's nothing worse than pulling a pot out of the drawer and having a few tablespoons of the finest dust just float in the air in front of you!

I have a gazzilion other things that go with a gazzilion stories, but this should be enough to get you started on your own stories!

...Or for hex head wood screws typically found in joints with "L" brackets and in cabinetry, take a few out before hand now and buy a box with over sized thread, that way when they rattle out the larger size will bite better when you replace them. You probably will never need to do it again.

woody with a view - 8-6-2010 at 05:02 AM

thanks for the ideas! i have two mounted spares and an extra tire. the axle trick sounds good and the screws and dust control (is that possible?) and the 5 gal water tank goes in the truck.....
