This confirms a conversation a group of us had last Sunday while at a BBQ. One of our friends had to get a curp # so he can finalize his divorce from
a Mexican...he is British and has a FM2. After reading your post I called my friend to ask questions...where, how much and how long did it take.
It does not cost anything.
It took about ten minutes.
You have to go to the "Regestro Civil" (sp?) that is in the area of the Delegation. My friend said there are two counters in the office..stay to the
right and look up on the wall where you will see a small sign that reads "curp". He said he pointed to the sign and told the young lady..."I need
that". Within ten minutes he had his "curp card", went and got it laminated and put it in his wallet.
You need to take your USA passport and FM2/3 with you. I forgot to ask him if he took an electric bill for proof...wouldn't hurt to take it with you.

Apparently in CSL you will need to get the "curp #". When we renewed our FM3's in May we were not required to have a curp #. I guess the rules have

For renewals of FM2s and FM3s under the new rules, CURP (pronounced coo-erp) numbers are required.
In San Felipe I got mine this week because they are also needed (for the owner) by Social Security when major construction is being done. They also
also help with registering mobile phones. It can be assumed that in a year or so they'll be needed for nearly everything government-related in
Mexico.
Here I went to the municipality office, and it only took ten minutes. Only my FM3 was needed, and I got one for another person (who wasn't present)
at the same time. There was no charge.

Another question ~ My FM3 expires on Monday and I am flying to the States on Wednesday. Do I need a letter from IMS to get out/in the country? I will
be gone for 4 weeks and then will start a new job the beginning of August as I have been unemployed for 3 weeks. What is the best way to handle this?

Sorry Marcie...I really don't know how to answer your questions and I don't want to give out false info.
I thought you have to cancel a FM2/3...not just let it expire but then again I really don't know. Best to ask INM.

They did not ask for a CURP in Guerrero Negro. There is a place on our new FM3 cards for a CURP number, but it is blank.

The talk around CSL...getting a curp # is something new like in the past couple of weeks or so. I guess that is why when we renewed in May we didn't
have to get
one.
Guess we got lucky...until next year. It will be interesting to see if other INM offices start requiring the curp # now.

Does getting a CURP have any other ramifications? Such as having to file a Mexican Income Tax Return? Or Does the CURP have to be renewed annually
or at some other recurrimg date? If so, is there a dollar penalty for not renewing on time?
I have encountered "ramifications" in a lot of other administrative things in Mexico. The beat goes on and on and on in Mexico ... never anything

You need to go to Immigration before you leave & before your current FM3 expires....you'll be trying to leave the country when your authorization
to be here has expired & that causes problems. It could mean you may be refused boarding the flight.
Go to Immigration Monday & start the application process to renew your existing FM3, tell them you're flying out Wednesday & they'll give you
a letter authorizing you to leave & return.
Did your new employer tell you they'd initiate your FM3 process?? I'm guessing they know you have one & didn't bother to note the expiration
date. It's your responsibility; not your employers; to make sure you stay legal.
La Paz INM doesn't require CURP....yet....but then, you have to jump through the hoops that the Cabo INM tells you to jump through. They may require

"Major construction" is any project (a home?) where the owner will be paying social security? Luckily it doesn't sound too difficult if you were able

getting a CURP is a good idea and no big deal.
Marcie and others...one should always try to renew FM3's a month before they expire..try not to leave it till the last minute as things may go wrong.
Also Marcie...make sure your former employers write a letter to immigration giving you a "baja" which means they HAVE to advise immigration you no
longer work for them. I wrote immigration a letter of change of employment but didnt know the employer had to as well and I got screwed over for
that...lost my accumulated years of fm3 because of that little trip up. Nobody tells you these things till it's too late...I got fined etc. and caused
me problems later.

In my case, it's a home addition (over 200 sq ft so letter of liberation will be needed) where the contractor is paying the social security. The
paperwork they complete needs to identify the owner, and now just an FM3 (or even local driver's license) is not enough, CURP also needed.
The CURP number is on demand and no problem at all to get, really it's just a case of the municipality entering the FM3 data in a different computer
system which then generates the number.
