Any American Auto Insurers that include Mexican coverage?

Ken Cooke - 6-28-2010 at 08:00 AM

I'm planning on changing policies this summer, and that would be a plus (in terms of savings).

Liabilty has to be written by a Mexican company... some U.S. companies will cover YOUR vehicle repairs a limited distance into Mexico. State Farm covers mine up to 50 miles from the border.

The best deal is to buy an annual policy... My $32,000 truck costs around $250/year for full coverage (and legal aid)... and when you go into Mexico for 2 or more weeks total, it is cheaper than buying daily coverage... and then stressing about getting back across the border before it expires!

An annual policy for my 2003 Wrangler Rubicon costs roughly $450.

Another plus would be to offer a policy that covered just the Baja peninsula instead of the entire Republic of Mexico.:!:

Shop around more... you can online... My 2010 truck is half that price... and is a top rarted company used by many here on Nomad. Yes, I get Northwest Mexico, not the entire country... But, Chihuahua, Sonora, Sinaloa and all of Baja is enough area.

I have 3 companies listed in my web site you can check.

I did the research, and yes, the prices for the companies your site lists are much lower than what I encountered elsewhere. Thanks!

Ken, AAA tells me my comprehensive coverage extends into Baja (theft, fire, etc.) although I've never had need to test it.
I just take a yearly liability-only policy with a Mex. Co. on top of that.

Now I need to find a company that insures mexico plated rigs...anyone have any info?

There are a couple USA Insurance Companies that include Mexico Comp coverage in their policy. Progressive is such a company so I carry only Mexico Liability on my 5th wheel via Lewis & Lewis. My Tow Vehicle is insured via AAA and has full complete Mexico coverage via Lewis & Lewis. Most Mexico Insurance Companies have a Northern Mexico Policy or Total Mexico Coverage Policy. Lewis & Lewis has some of the highest $ Liability coverage. You use to be able to get by with the min but Mexican Courts have be awarding higher $ claims so we upped our $ amounts.

rocmoc n AZ/Baja

I tested that AAA coverage.....after sitting with an agent and having a very nice conversation about where we lived and the local resturants etc. We very specifically explained that we had a mexican liability policy and wanted to verifiy that the truck itself would be covere. I proceeded the next weekend to back into brick wall. Never dreamed their would be an issue of coverage. AAA asked several questions when I filed the claim and then two weeks later told us we were not covered because we travel to Baja too often.

RAT BASTARDS ALL OF THEM INCLUDING THE AGENT WHO DENIED THAT WE HAD THAT CONVERSTATION.

Bajahowodd - 6-28-2010 at 01:38 PM

You really need to pull out your policy and read it thoroughly. I've been aware of US companies providing certain coverage in Mexico, but as David noted the coverage is restricted geographically. I've never heard of any policy language that dealt with frequency.

knuckles - 6-28-2010 at 02:24 PM

Well after they denied the claim, I found an addednum that had to do with frequency of travel to mexico. Very vague and stated "regular and customary". Bottom line, It was about $500 over the deductable and rather than spend my life fighting about it, I would rather walk and spread their deceit to everyone I can. If the agent told us we were covered not two weeks prior, they should have stood by what their agent stated.

I always makes me wonder if something serious ever does happen am I really covered or not. Will they try to find some loophole? Of course. But whatcha gonna do?

k-rico - 6-28-2010 at 05:32 PM

I had an engine fire south of Mexicali about 6 years ago. Mercury insurance totaled the truck (97 Chevy 1/2 ton) and sent a check for the full value, even paid to have it towed back to San Diego. I wasn't paying any kind of increased premium for coverage in Mexico. Good, fast, no hassle service. I don't know how far south they extend the coverage.

AAA to the back of the line.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you caged and trussed your car after that happened.:bounce:

motoged - 6-28-2010 at 09:54 PM

When looking into motorcycle insurance for Mexico, I recall that the wording indicated that accidents off of paved roads were not insured...."WTF is it good for?", I thought in my usual demure manner.... and decided if I ever crashed off-road and needed a tw, I would still have to pay a local to haul it to the hiway:lol:

So far, I have never needed to use the insurance on truck or bikes:bounce:

Baja&Back - 6-28-2010 at 11:55 PM

Progressive gives me full coverage (except Liability) anywhere in Mexico for my Toyhauler and my ATV (offroad too).

I shop ALL the US agents EVERY year. Best price and inclusions for a Mexican policy are consistently at San Xavier Insurance in Tucson & Nogales AZ. (sorry Geoff)

Hope this helps.

cutexianchick - 7-1-2010 at 09:57 AM

I didnt read all the posts. You can buy through Costco, bought a year for $145, limited territory the upper states and all of baja. Full coverage, ect... this is on a 2002 tundra access cab. They contract through BWMIS, I htink full territory was close to three, but I cant remember

knuckles - 7-1-2010 at 03:35 PM

Yeah Ken, now caged and trussed with Lewis and Lewis. Some of their fine print concerns me as well, but you just do the best you can and hope you have no further misfortune.

I am sure other nomads have some really good input, mine was smal and in the big picture of life, insignificant.

Remember everyone, stuff can be replaced. People cant.

sancho - 7-1-2010 at 04:23 PM

I have a Lewis & Lewis liability policy also,
I do like the gaudy high, $300,000 liability
number, I suppose it would be hard to ever
reach that number though. I bought their road
side assistance, only $18 or so, but after reading
it's limitations for towing a conventional
vehicle, it is not on the surface what it seems

Bajajorge - 7-2-2010 at 09:03 AM

Escapees RV club advertises an insurance company in their magazine that writes Mexico coverage. Can't remember the company name though. Look on the Escapees website and maybe you can get further info.
