has anyone rented a car before from HERTZ ADVANTAGE at La Paz airport? I'm given an incredible price for a week car rental via VOLARIS website but
when I pulled up LA PAZ it kept giving me "Airport Advantage" - so I called to inquire, they told me it's not the Hertz desk inside the terminal, you
have to "walk outside the airport and find the HERTZ ADVANTAGE" sign/ place....I never heard of this nor have I seen it before at LAP and it wants my
credit card to book the price....anyone done this before or know if this is legit? THANKS!capt. mike - 6-30-2010 at 08:53 AM
car rental scams at la paz are notorious!
go on line with budget or national and print and take your res and quote.
when they richard with you on check in all you have to do is threaten an immediate call to world corporate (show them your cell ph at the ready) and
they get very nice.... been there more than once.
Never use the bigger firms. Price on line.MitchMan - 6-30-2010 at 09:08 AM
Sounds like a scam to me. Never saw any car rental or any other commercial anything outside of the LAP airport building, everything is inside only.
I typically use Thrifty or Budget and get the cheapest vehicle money can rent, usually $42 USD per day. If they want more from me, I always tell them
they did if for me last time and humbly ask if they could do it again, this time too. Usually works if I stop talking at that point and just let them
"twist" on it a bit.Natalie Ann - 6-30-2010 at 09:19 AM
When flying in to La Paz, I've found that sometimes the airport car rental places have available cars.... and sometimes not. Last trip I had to take
a taxi from airport to car rental site on the Malecon. They did allow me to return the car to the airport site.
If I remember correctly, rental prices were a bit different at the two locations. I did ask about this, but the reply was simply a smile.

(Edit to add: Mike's correct. Always always always take a printed copy of your reservation - dates, car type, price quote.)

Most car rentals in the USA are more expensive if they're at the airport. Off airport sites are MUCH cheaper in my experience. (They have to pay the
airport a bunch to be there)Paulclark - 6-30-2010 at 11:13 AM
There is a new Hertz office in the Wal-Mart parking lot and I have rented there without problem. Possibly they have a shuttle from the airport???msrla - 6-30-2010 at 04:53 PM
Hey thanks for the replies! Further investigating and it looks like the car rental agency is called ADVANTAGE and according to the AMEX travel site,
they shuttle you. Volaris was telling me "Aeropuerto Advantage" $160 for the week including tax, fees AND Liability! We all know, hey, if that's
real, would be a good deal - but low and behold, Amex travel site gives me a slightly higher wkly rate and says $12.95 a day liability - nothing
about it being included. Knew it was too good to be true.
I'll go with my friend Alejandro at Thrifty, which only charges $6.00 a day liability (I carry the Premium car rental insurance via Amex when
travelling in Mexico which extends your coverage but you do need to still buy the liability when in Mexico) A bit higher wkly rate for the Nissan
Tsuru (which I think is the same one we've been driving for the last 8 years, LOL) But at least I know there will be a car waiting there and who I'm
dealing with. My final bill is ALWAYS wrong, but as someone here mentioned, Amex always deals with it for me and charges me what my original
confirmation says.
Curious what the Airport Advantage place is (sounds like a new rental agency in La Paz?) and if anyone has any future experience with them!
Thanks for the replies!BMG - 6-30-2010 at 05:50 PM
I can't help any of your questions of renting a car, but I have had some experience with Alamo in La Paz. You are not dealing with the Alamo company.
Not sure if this is the same with the other big name rental agencies. If you do have some issues, Alamo will not go very far in helping you resolve a
problem.
