I got 12.83 pesos/dollar at Bancomer today

vandy - 7-2-2010 at 09:41 AM

Not a bad exchange rate for cash dollars at Bancomer in San Jose del Cabo. I was getting worried with all the talk about banks not exchanging cash dollars without an account.

But no problem.

DENNIS - 7-2-2010 at 09:43 AM

The right now official exchange rate is 13.08 to one. 12.83 is tolerable.

Woooosh - 7-2-2010 at 09:51 AM

umm. We haven't been able to find any Mexican change houses in Rosarito that gives anything close to the posted rate. We exchange in San Ysidro. The profit spread is just too profitable. Good for you!

oldjack - 7-2-2010 at 09:54 AM

last Wednesday I went to the Banamex in Los Barriles... to exchange $300usd to pesos.... they would not do in without my having a FM3 & Passport.... I do not have FM3 yet!! ... I was told that the regs had been changed as of 6/2/2010 to allow exchange with either FM3 OR passport.... apparently not..... in Los Barriles!!!!

fishabductor - 7-2-2010 at 09:54 AM

Yesterday at banamex. the rate was 11.87.

And you won't. Their approximate fee for their service is 2 %. After all, they can't be expected to survive on money-laundering alone.

I know banks charge fees as well. I was just giving the current rate as a comparison.

That isn't even close.

karenintx - 7-2-2010 at 10:40 AM

Tel-Mex USA gave a 12.86 exchange rate yesterday when I called to
add more credit to our accout.

Bob and Susan - 7-2-2010 at 01:15 PM

she had to go to the manager
then
he did something in the computer
then
she was able to go to the teller and transfer
dollars to pesos and withdraw pesos

its becomming quite a task to change dollars to pesos

Pompano - 7-2-2010 at 01:32 PM

Now on the floor at 13.170...where can I get a gray jacket?

pesos to dollars

elskel - 7-3-2010 at 10:05 PM

From reading the above posts, it looks like only one bank in San Jose is exchanging dollars to pesos. Has anyone else been able to exchange at any banks?

elskel - 7-3-2010 at 10:07 PM

banamex, Scotia, and bancnorte, and bancomer all exchange, I believe. However it's been awhile since I have done so.

Last time I exchanged it was 15.6!!!

I use HSBC and they don't exchange.

Fact is, Peso vrs. Dollar will always be a give and take thing. The dollar will give a little and the peso will take a little, but the dollar will rule.

banks exchanging dollars for pesos?

elskel - 7-4-2010 at 02:18 PM

The last few months, none of the banks were exchanging dollars for pesos if you did not have an account. Has this changed with some of the banks, if you do not have an account, they are now exchanging.

Russ - 7-4-2010 at 03:21 PM

I don't know this but don't you get the best exchange rate through the ATM's?

fishabductor - 7-4-2010 at 03:50 PM

supposively, The problem is they charge you a exchange fee as well as a atm usage fee and whatever other fees they can stick to you. I transfer funds from my us account to my mex account, this works well so far. The transfer fee in $30, but when you transfer a few grand at a time it works out to be pretty low.

Is it windy up north? It's whitecap city down here.

cutexianchick - 7-5-2010 at 10:04 AM

yes this is the topic I was looking for!!

Bottom line... I have a passport going to MX, husband lives in MX has a bank account, no US passport. Will they let me exchange there? Should I exchange at the bank/other, US side (san Ysidro) or wait until we get to San Jose? If I can exchange at 13 should I exchange more money that just what is needed for gas. We leave at the end of the week...

Bajahowodd - 7-5-2010 at 01:48 PM

One should not travel Baja with any significant amount of cash on them, Pesos or Dollars. From what I recall, you are staying a couple of hotels, one of which is all-inclusive. Considering that many, if not most of the restaurants higher on the food chain than taco stands take credit cards. the supermarkets take credit card, too. You really don't need much more than Pemex money heading down. And, with the exception of San Ignacio, virtually every town has an ATM available. I just don't like carrying a bunch of cash.

Bob and Susan - 7-5-2010 at 02:51 PM

no one takes credit cards here since bruce leach left...

bring cash or use the ATM (extra fees)

Been traveling from LA to Cabo for decades. Credit cards work for so many situations. If you guys don't take them, or don't like to take them, so be it. I would be the first to pummel the card folks for charging so much for fees and other BS. Just saying that for the purpose of safety, folks ought not to carry much cash.

Bajajorge - 7-6-2010 at 09:54 AM

Over the weekend, 13.1. Today I see 12.9.

oladulce - 7-6-2010 at 10:08 AM

I have found that the Banamex website http://www.banamex.com/ closely matches what I've gotten at a branch ATM the same day. Once or twice i think the rate i got at the local branch was a little better than what's online, but most of the time it's a good indicator of what exchange rate to expect.

Today is posted 12.65. This is using a Citibank debit card- no fees for the transaction to obtain pesos.
