bill erhardt - 7-7-2010 at 08:59 AM

I am in need of a US Notary in Loreto. If somebody is a Notary, armed with his/her seal, or knows of one in Loreto, please contact me by return message on this forum or by telephone (613) 135-0610.

I don't know about the rules for other states, but a friend who is a California notary told me that they are geographically constrained to the State of California.

You might find someone to play ball with you on this, Bill, and good luck in your quest. But I think Elizabeth is right, an American notary can notarize only within the continental U.S. When confronted with this situation a year ago I had two options -- go through the Apostille process, which seemed more complicated than I wanted to deal with, or make a quick trip across the border to a title company that gave me a courtesy sign-off. I chose the latter.

Thanks, all. Your consensus is probably correct, since I found no takers. I will have to resort to overnight mail when I get to the States.

You can have your legal notery done at the US Consul's office in Cabo San Lucas ... I have done this and it is quite legal.

Just wondering, doesn't the Apostille/notary thing go both ways?

We did an apostille while Hubby was in USA and me in MX, it was all accepted (....after the $100 parcelpost doodoo).

From what I understand it's a reciprocation agreement between nations to ensure that what is "notarized" in one country can be accepted in another.

Aren't there MX notarios that apostille (or whatever/reciprocate) to the USA for notary services?

fwiw, hubby signed a document in our town, certified by a local US notary, sent it to the Mx gov place in Seattle which verified that the local US Notary was in good standing and therefore authorized the MX authorities to accept the US Notary's "stamp of approval", and the MX authorities then proceeded with business.
