New fuel prices, effective on July 10th, 2010...

Magna.............$ 8.05 pesos per liter
Premium..........$ 9.51 pesos per liter
Diesel..............$ 8.45 pesos per liter

These prices are in liters... since 1 gallon = 3.7854 liters and today (July 10th, 2010) 1 dollar = $12.30 pesos (+/-), we can calculate the approximate price per gallon:

Magna.............$ 2.477 dollars per gallon
Premium..........$ 2.927 dollars per gallon
Diesel..............$ 2.601 dollars per gallon

hey baja cactus... i sware when I fill up I feel like I am paying the same prices at US. we make sure it is at 0 and we pay in pesos, im afraid they will rip us off with US money. Maybe this is why, I dont see the difference in prices... if it is 270 peseos i think it is 27 dollars, but it is not.
Are these new gas prices lower?

no way

i go there EVERY trip
and get a factura and check

and when i cross back to the usa the price really increases

you just dont travel alot with a load

I always wonder if it is just as well I fill up on the US side rather than Mexico when I travel to and from Southern Baja.

I have a Master Card that gives me back 5% cash when I use at any USA gas stations. Lets say gas is $3 a gallon, minus .15 a gallon for my cash back, that comes to $2.85 a gallon. As Bob and Susan say, it would be approx. $2.48 a gallon in Baja which is a difference of .37 a gallon.

The one big difference is, I GET AN ACTUAL VOLUME OF GAS THAT I PAY FOR IN THE US AND I ALWAYS ASSUME THAT I GET SHORTED FOR AT LEAST 10% OF GAS IN MEXICO.

That brings it to about even. That is assuming that I only get a 10% short pour. I used to get upset about the short pour but the older I get the more I realize it's just something I must live with if I want to travel to Baja.

$225.00 per tank in USA

75 gallons
$2.48 per gallon in baja
$186.00 per tank in baja

Differance for regular customer = $39.00

you get 5% back
thats $225.00*.05=$11.25

your savings overall $27.75 in baja

now...you think you get screwed 10%
(i dont think so but that's my opinion)
that's minus $21.35

you still save $6.38 a tank

I honestly figure AT LEAST 10% but I do not know that for a fact.

Keep in mind that the tank holds 75 gallons so when I get to a gas station I usually fill it up with around 60 gallons. If I use the credit card that gives me the most time to pay in full by only using the credit card just after the billing cycle, I get almost 60 days to pay.

You seem to be a numbers man. Can you please work out for me the TRUE amount that I am over-spending in Baja by using one of your formula's based on the following:

Cost of money VS waiting 60 days to pay.

The current inflationary rate as set forth by our trusted government.

Please don’t forget to take into consideration the little extra fee the bank charges when I use my ATM card to W/D Peso's.

In Baja if they wash my window I usually give around 10-20 or so pesos as propina for doing all of the large RV windows. However if you want to offset that cost, in the USA, while waiting for the tank to fill, I will go into their Mini Market to buy a snack. That might make the propina a push, but that’s for you to decide.

Any other consideration you might think of to make this a true and accurate test would be appreciated.

I am not driving down until October 1st, so if you need to consult with the IBM Big Blue or any other means you may deem needed for this calculation, you have some time.

Mexico City - Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) made official the increases apply to gasoline Saturday, which will be eight cents for the Magna, so the retail price will remain at 8.36 pesos per liter, and four cents for Premium to settle at 9.90 pesos per liter and eight cents for diesel, which will retail for July 8.72 pesos per liter.
This is the seventh year to increase the price of gasoline, so the Magna has a cumulative increase of 56 cents, the Premium of 33 cents and 56 cents Diesel.
Juan Pablo González, president of the Mexican Association of Entrepreneurs stations (Amega), said in an interview that the increases have been constant and were informed by the sales management of Pemex Refining.

Both San Felipe and Ensenada Pemex stations were selling Magna at 7.97 pesos/ liter and Premium at 9.47 pesos per liter just 4 days ago. The exchange rate in both places was 12.00 pesos per dollar making Magna (regular) about $2.51/ gallon... about 50 cents cheaper than low price San Diego stations. However, not all Pemex stations pump an honest liter!

Gasoline quality? Yes, I have never had issues with gasoline in Baja the past dozen years... at least never with my Toyota!

Many more years ago (mid 70's and 80's), before Magna/ Premium... the two grades were Nova and Extra. Extra (unleaded) was rare (like Premium today) in many places, but Nova was everywhere. Nova was leaded 81 octane (maybe less) and caused our cars to ping unless we retarded the ignition or added octane booster.

In Spanish, No Va means it doesn't go... a good name for the bad gas!

I have heard that the Pemex prices are higher near the border. Is that true ? Can someone recommend a place for diesel, that has honest pumps, maybe near Ensenada ?
I recently installed a 42 gallon tank on my truck camper, so I can go pretty far. With all of the talk of less than honest pumps and all in Baja, I'm feeling I should just fill it up in San Diego anyhow. But where ?

Yes, the border area Pemex stations are closer to the California prices (per an old arrangement when U.S. prices were cheaper than Mexico), and since we cannot be sure of honest Pemex near the border, I recommend you cross with a full tank so you can reach El Rosario (225 miles) to top off at Baja Cactus Pemex. The next top off would be Guerrero Negro... The border price zone goes 20 km. south of the border line (even La Rumorosa has the higher price because it is close to the border, but far from a border crossing).

Saw regular at the Pemex, south end of Rosarito (the one you can access from both the toll and old road, posted last Friday at 2.51 for regular... not too bad.. and one of the few stations around that put up the price in pesos and dollars... the one with the 7/11 there too...

On how much is actually pumped, so far each time I have filled ... I have been happily surprised that the amount need to fill was far less than I thought.. which left me with at least 10-15 dollars left over for tacos and beer... or some cigars.. it all goes up in smoke one way other the other... but, its nice using it in that fashion to me...

that gas station has the ONLY good coffee
you can get at a gas station when traveling south

i cant belive most of the world drinks instant coffee
