Missed connection on Mex 1

Me: 2007 Silverado brown.
You: 2000ish Ford pickup with camper shell.
When: July 5
Where: Mex 1, just north of Catavina
You were passing me when you drifted into our lane and whacked my driver's side mirror. I know this because your passenger side mirror was folded in flat. You kept going, refusing to pull over to check for damage that you caused. Would like to meet NOB sometime to discuss your future health issues.

The never-ending story. Take one part of very narrow highway. Add hairpin turns and hills. Add one part drivers holding on to their Tecate cans. Add one part of "I'm in Mexico, so I can do anything I want." Finish off with a bunch of older folks whose reflexes may not still match the task.

Sorry if you had any real damage. But, it seems that occurrences such as these could be more than enough to deserve its own topic designation.

We pulled over about an hour later and never could see any damage at all; but it made a load sharp crack and the truck lurched. The other truck had a loaded cargo carrier that goes into the hitch receiver so I could not see the plates. About 3 or 4 miles later a hand came out of the passenger side and pushed the mirror back out. I've heard of lots of mirror-to-mirror smashes, but always going in opposite directions. Given that passing on Mex 1 takes maximum concentration and huevos to boot, how could someone drift into the occupied lane on a straightaway??

Not so. I had my mirror hit twice in the same day about an hour apart by the SAME vehicle while being passed. It was a Baja Race support truck pulling a trailer, going about 90 mph, and weaving all over the road.

We passed the Race rig again about a half hour later. The trailer was on its side off the side of Mex 1 with the tow vehicle slewed around half off the highway and half on. Stopped to see if they were all right and to help but they waved us on saying their crew was on the way. I'd guess that their blood alcohol was 3 or 4 times coherent levels. Good thing they crashed gently.....

They'd have killed themselves or somebody else if they had been able to keep going.....

what was the source of the load crack, and what lurched? I thought your mirror got hit??

You know, we puzzled over that very thing; we were obviously hit by his mirror (folded back) but my driver's side mirror was not moved. I have the kind that fold in and out with a motor so maybe when it is out it takes much more force to move mine forward that to fold in his - I'm guessing. The outside rim of the mirror housing on mine is a tough black plastic and showed no marks. The lurch was similar to a powerful gust of wind from the side or when you meet an oncoming truck going 70mph.

Maybe the gears got damaged. does the mirror work now?

I was thinking the crack had come from somewhere else like under the truck.

Sometimes its someone in a rental motor home going the other direction. The way he was driving I was surprised he had made it that far down the peninsula (South of San Ignacio) without incident......upon further reflection, maybe it was me hogging the road........naaaaaaa:lol::lol:....dt

Hell I had my suburbans mirror whacked off parked on the street in the USA. I went in the house for just a second and as I was turning to the vehicle I heard a thump and the sound of plastic cracking. At first i thought that it was a car running over a plastic hubcap. But As I looked at the drivers side door it was clear that the side view mirror had been whacked. As I looked down the road I saw a light green SUV
slowing down. It never stopped. It just kept going. Must have lost its passenger side mirror. The next day I noticed that my neighbor ,who has a Ford dually that he always has parked on the street ,had its street side mirror neatly tucked all the way in. He maust have been hit once before.

if no damage to your vehicle, perhaps there was no contact?
Sounds like your car WAS NOT hit by overtaking vehicle. Perhaps the sound/lurch was turbulance due to passing vehicle, bad pavement, trash on road, etc. Perhaps in the moment when you were concentrating on the overtaking vehicle you were distracted and did not see that debris or dog you ran over?

I had my mirror broken the same way by a truck towing an oversize travel trailer driving about 15" over the line. Cost me $500.00 to fix. My question is: Did I get a karma debt erased or did the driver of the other vehicle accumulate one?

On my mirrors (2005 F250) the mirrors fold in and out and make a snapping noise as the move. Probably the spring loaded detents. I could see that it would make a loud noise if hit by another truck. It's essentially snapping in and out of place.
