5 Meter Great White spotted in Rosarito Beach this morning

A 5 meter Great White was spotted close to the beach in Rosarito this morning. We've been seeing more seals body-surfing the past few days, so he probably followed them in for a meal. My nephew and his buds were out surfing early this morning and the police (not lifeguards) waved them in to tell them to clear the water. (Of course they paddled back out...)

No, I didn't see it... but I am watching. Will be interesting to see if if they tell the beachgoers who will arrive after the FIFA final later on...

photo from a post on the punta banda newsletter mid june. photographer (dm) says he thinks it is the tail fin of a great white. in the water near punta banda, may be in the water near rosarito now.

DM also mentioned he thought it may be caught up in a net, but I question that. In my experience as a commercial fisherman, we had two in our nets on the same day, different nets, and when they get their nose in the mesh, they give up and die, unlike their Soupfin or Mako brothers which will thrash and twist a net into a ball of knots.
Something about the White that doesn't have that fighting instinct. Guess they don't need one.
The guy in the foto could have been thrashing in a bait ball.

From that distance it's hard to be sure what it is other than big.

The ocean is sand bottom here. There have been lots of seals all week so maybe he came over for a snack. I would imagine they are more common on the west side of the Coronado Islands where the shelf falls off, the hunting better and the water colder.

where did you commercial fish out of? What sort of fishery, Gill, seine..etc?

My family commercial fished out of AK and has for 40+years. Mostly Ketchikan, Bristol Bay and Wrangell.

Dana Point. Gill nets...lobster....Swordfish in the harpoon only days.
