Bumpy Highways Update

ElFaro - 7-14-2010 at 08:05 AM

Wife and I towed our trailer to Estero Beach weekend of 7/9-7/12. Coming back we take the toll road north to the Pto. Nuevo exit and then on the free road to the Blvd. 2000 exit at the studios. Just since Feb. the free road has become a quilt of asphalt patches especially in the Califia area that is making towing very difficult. Our rig is just getting pounded much more than B4. Blvd 2000 to the Tecate free road exit was littered with dirt , rocks, and debris from some housing developements. The free road into Tecate was not bad even though there is some road work going on into Tecate proper...but alot of potholes. All of this probably due to the overloaded trucks.

Wow, how quickly things change!

Was on the free road north from Ensenada to the Blvd. 2000 to the Tecate free highway on July 6... No pot hole issues, in fact the free road north from Cantamar is all 4 lanes+ wide, done (except for one bridge), in concrete. Was amazed it got done.

The Blvd. 2000 was excellent, no rocks, busy with lots of traffic, fast and easy.

Hwy. 3 from Ensenada to San Felipe is pretty bad with pot holes, however, and they are repaving sections now. Hwy. 5 south of Mexicali has several unpaved miles between La Puerta and Rio Hardy while they repair the earthquake damage and widen the road to 4 lanes.

DK...are you towing anything? If not you may not even notice all the uneven pavement/asphalt! A single vehicle can fly over alot of uneven pavement but when towing its easy to get a harmonic going between truck and trailer that forces one to slow down considerably. You don't have to have potholes to have bad pavement.

I concur with Faro, Blvd 2000 does have about 30 "cracked pavement" sections on the right hand lane. Undoubtedly because of trucking traffic.
We normally travel the left lane at about 70MPH.

DK's Tacoma has a very adaptable suspension; I was amazed how smooth it rides, the one time I took a ride in it, I wished my motorhome was as smmoth and quite, no rattles and squeaks. And of course he's always having the Baja fever - that explains he didin't feel those potholes :-)

No, never... so, your post might be better read as "bumpy roads if towing"? I do mention often that driving times must be extended if towing or if in a motorhome.

Thanks for your report... I did try to word my reply in such a way as to not disclaim yours.
