Yellowtail Vacation Video

Skipjack Joe - 7-18-2010 at 10:10 AM

I wasn't aware Alex was shooting this at the time.

Turn the volume way up.

I'm not really as old as I sound.

Recommended for immature audiences.

edit: Enlarging the display. -- Didn't work. Works in preview but not in actual post. Will stop tinkering.

Nice fish. Alex did a good job filming. The audio file must be corrupted, I hear a lot of huffing and puffing going on.

acadist - 7-18-2010 at 10:48 AM

nice fish!

fandango - 7-18-2010 at 10:48 AM

i couldn't watch the whole video. did you release him?
alex did a great job with the video, he even put the camera down at a good place when he reached for the fish.

I promised myself to bring a fighting belt next time.

There was a bruise mark on the lower abdomen for a month. During these battles I kept thinking I'm damaging my guts somehow.

Yeah, we let him/her go.

We kept one small firecracker. Half of which we ate as sashimi and the other half was bbqed for dinner for the two of us. Surprisingly good bbqed. Excellent as sashimi.

That is the kinda of video that gets us through the wait for our next trip to Baja! Thank you for sharing your fish with us, oh yeah.....very nice fish.

BajaBruno - 7-18-2010 at 01:41 PM

Was that a small diamond jig, Joe? I didn't see it clearly.

baitcast - 7-18-2010 at 02:12 PM

No belt Igor:rolleyes: you only forget that once:lol:

Just where were you at the time? Getting old is a b-tch!! The last time I was into one of those guys I thought the big one was only moments away,I like the rod by the way and your boy what have you been feeding him?

It was a Megabait. But it didn't last long. It was Alex's turn after me and it rocked him with that one as well.

I started out with some Salas 6X jigs which I had bought at the Longfin before crossing border. Lost both in first half hour. The first - drag was too light. The second - the top shot broke off.

It was 200 feet down and I searched for anything heavy. The Megabaits worked well. I later found more Salas 6X and 6X Jr. Everything worked when we found the fish.

It was so good they took them on the way down. That's the weirdest thing. You're letting more and more line out and it just goes slack. But you're only 50 feet down. Slam the reel into and gear and start reeling like mad. If you're not fast you come up empty.

I almost didn't put the video online, Robin. It was such a shock. You know how you get used to the way you look in the mirror shaving and then see someone's picture of yourself and ... whoa!!! Is that me? "I look better than that", you tell yourself.

Well, the truth is that Alex had started shooting when the fish was almost at the top. You don't see the first 15 minutes where I'm spilling my guts trying to stop run after run as the line is screaming off the reel.

You should of seen Alex with his first fish. It looked like he had just taken a shower. His face was dripping wet with perspiration. Those fish really kick butt until you get the hang of it.

Rob, I can't remember where the fighting belt is any longer. But if we do any more of this sort of thing I'm definitely going to buy one. Those 15lb salmon in alaska were ridiculously easy compared to yellowtail. We got those with 8wt fly rods.

DianaT - 7-18-2010 at 03:28 PM

That was fun to watch---Thanks, and boy, Alex is almost an adult now!

Fun to see him keeping dad cool.

bajajudy - 7-18-2010 at 03:46 PM

Wonderful
And you wont have to take the jibes about the one who got away!
Well done, both of you

BajaBruno - 7-18-2010 at 05:27 PM

The Megabait is very fishy. I bought a bunch of them and they have been very effective on lots of different fish. Have you tried them with a stinger hook instead of the treble? I had a lot of trouble with yellowtail biting the top of the lure, which flung the trebles into the side of their head.

I haven't used them since I put on the stinger hooks, so I was wondering if they actually improve mouth hooking. The Salas don't look like they would have much action with a stinger hook, but maybe that's not true.

Skipjack Joe - 7-18-2010 at 06:04 PM

Yes, the largest megabait had a stinger hook. The release on that fish was a bit easier. I don't remember any of the yellowtail being hooked in the side of the head with either treble or stinger. The stinger megabait lasted only one fish as I recall.

Sometimes it seemed we couldn't keep them out of the rocks no matter what we did. The last one I brought in, however, couldn't have been more than 25' below the boat when he took to jig. No worries. I just leaned back and let the drag do all the work.

Here's a picture of Alex with one of his.

VERY nice Igor!

Alex on the job

Skipjack Joe - 7-18-2010 at 06:14 PM

Here's another.

Normally you bring them in standing up. He sat down to rest the rod on the gunnel(?).

After watching your vid it reminded me how tough the whole jack family really is,I,ve caught them all but the amberjack and the trevally, something about that tail that gives them away.

The last time I saw me in a current pic was scary told my wife I must not have been feeling well that day:lol:

Now lets hear about the trip!
Rob

tripledigitken - 7-19-2010 at 09:30 AM

Nice fish, nice video and the grab that Alex made was awesome!

Where did you catch it?

Pompano - 7-19-2010 at 09:43 AM

Igor...I'm only online using my Verizon wireless card here in the middle of the Redwood Forest, upper northern California..not the greatest signal strength.

Got bits and piecies of the great video..looking forward to tomorrow when I can find WI-FI in some RV park in Oregon and can watch it's conclusion. Kudos to you and Alex.

Iflyfish - 7-19-2010 at 03:33 PM

Yes, they certainly have an impressive tail as seen clearly in this picture I took of one circling under the boat. My vote goes to the jack crevalle, though. I'm going to post a picture of one on Russ,s thread.

I was kinda hoping to do a report with only pictures this time. I don't have the energy to write.

They were caught at BOLA.

I think this video works well because of it's honesty and intimacy. Basically nobody paid any attention to it and things come out looking genuine. That's my take on it.

You may be interested in knowing how it came about. This summer Alex has an assignment to read 'The Old Man and the Sea' and construct a 10 min video having something to do with the book. Well, get this, we came up with doing a film called, ta dah, "The Old Man and the Sea of Cortez". But Alex felt that the story woudln't be right without a large fish. So when I hooked into this guy I heard him say "I'm gonna get the camera". Otherwise, there would have been no video.

That's a hoot!! A real Paul Harvey, "and the rest of the story is....

Lucky dad. And that's not just humility speaking.

I was lucky enough to know early on that he was the best thing that came along in my life. And I've taken advantage of the opportunity to make it as best as it could be. Never thought being a dad could be so much fun in life. Well, after two failed marriages something had to break my way.

wessongroup - 7-20-2010 at 03:45 PM

Third one is always a charm... and good for you.. you had the vision and experience to make it REALLY work.. you do work well together...

Hope all your days are just like that one .. for ever... :):)

You mean like this one?

Got this up in the sierras a couple of weeks after the yellowtail adventures.

An underwhelming experience? That would be an understatement.

Still, they are rather pretty ...

Amberjacks and Jack Trevally are tuff fighters. Amberjacks are good eating, but Trevally aren't. Trevally are like big Toros.

Sure looks like a Brookie.

Skipjack Joe - 7-21-2010 at 07:27 PM

It is indeed a brook trout caught at timberline (> 9000'). It was really beautiful up there as the snow melt is late this year and these guys were right next to the bank looking for bugs coming in.

Rob, after baja we got tremendous headaches up there at that high elevation. We couldn't fall asleep at night and I took Tylenols for 3 straight days before my brain could adjust to the pressure.

Cypress, some species of trevally are pretty good eating. The resorts at Christmas Island served their guests trevally regularly. Trevally and wahoo were always on the menu it seemed. Golden trevally I know is a fine eating fish. Follow the link for food quality of trevally.

http://www.australiantropicalfoods.com/index.php/australian-seafood/golden-trevally/

I believe Kira shows records of a few trevally caught in baja.

BTW, there were no fish we had in baja that were as good as pan fried trout from the alpine lakes.
