Convert your flare pistol into a 38cal single shot

bajaguy - 7-24-2010 at 08:54 AM

I would rather use the 12 gauge flare, or maybe one of these to carry around.............

I was trying to find a link about how to modify the flare cartridge. You can polverize the magnessium so the guns shoots a cloud of fire a short distance.

Well it might set their rear on fire

Scary that some people are that STUPID

noproblemo2 - 7-24-2010 at 09:40 AM

Up until this week hadn't really given it much thought but we do have a flare gun kit here, just need to find it and put it in a safe spot where we know where it is at all times, plus check on the expiration dates as it has been a while.

bajaguy - 7-24-2010 at 09:52 AM

For the flare gun, it's not about causing injuries (although that would be a bonus), it is about the response to the threat.

These idiots have the mindset that you will roll over and do what they want........they are not prepared for ANY response from their victims....do something....ANYTHING to buy you time for an escape or to take control of the situation.

I know you've given a lot of thought to the idea of a flare gun and the conversion kit.

Excessive force isn't necessarily the best remedy. Killing someone is not always ideal.

If you hurt someone, they might go away. And it would give you time to run.

A body is another story. Plus, if the Authorities are involved, you won't be able to explain away a bullet hole.

The only real reason a conversion kit would be good is if someone has a gun pointed at you, and you think they are about to pull the trigger.

Otherwise, a flare to the chest or head will definite distract your assailant and buy you a little time. Minor bruising doesn't mean a perp hasn't been knocked down and is hurting.

Great idea, but, I think I'll stay with the flare gun.

Yes it is. If they have your bad fortune in mind, death is their just reward.

I don't see how converting something into a firearm somehow exempts it from the no-firearms law. That's like saying your home-made zip gun is just some plumbing. If you intend to hide it until needed why not hide something a bit more useful, like maybe something with two bullets, or hey, maybe even more. If you are really keen on getting serious home protection, just join a shooting club or get a hunting license. You will then be able to obtain an arms importation permit for several very effective options — 5-shot shotgun, for one. That'll clear the air.

If your assailants have guns at the ready, just cooperate, there is nothing you can do fast enough to keep from getting shot. If they are just bullying or have a knife or something, a fungo bat or fish billy is about perfect, and the cops, if they are called, will probably applaud any damage you inflict.

I thought this was interesting as an alternative to a real pistol. It may be only one shot, I think a 6-shot 9mm air rifle is the ticket. And it is legal. I may be ordering one up here shortly

[Edited on 7-26-2010 by fishabductor]

But it is a 9MM which might be an illegal caliber........

Pinchy chivas!!

Great idea; wish I would have thought of it! However, possesion of 38cal ammo is also illegal in Mexico :?::?:

I think the title of this thread should be changed to:

"Convert your Mexican jail sentence from 1 year to 10 years - Here's How" :D

A few years ago I believe a nautical jeweler from San Diego was stopped at a check point and towed boat searched...they found his flare gun and he got into a whole lot of trouble...I heard jail time? Anybody know about that incident?

805gregg - 7-26-2010 at 06:37 PM

Just get a good air rifle, totally legal and deadly. A kid was killed recently when his friend shot him in the chest with an air rifle.

mojo_norte - 7-26-2010 at 08:16 PM

I would think if you were to kill a local in a 'make my day' situation - especially with an illegal weapon you would be headed for jail for a long time.

wessongroup - 7-27-2010 at 08:13 AM

Must say, it would appear to be a viable alternative .... had no idea that they were that deadly.. used to have a the "Red Rider BB gun" got it for Christmas in the third grade from Santa (did not shoot my eye out) ... my nephew who is 20 and lives up in SLO has it now.. guess it's a collectors item by now.. gave it to him when he was in the third grade.. for a Christmas present.. his mother was not to excited about the present.. as are most mothers.. with guns..

I sent this to Fred Hoctor a few years ago after he reported that flair guns were OK.

"In July 1999 while returning from San Lucas Cove we were stopped at the
last federal inspection at one of the Ensenada toll booths, and they
found some spare flair gun shells in my boat. We had removed the flair
gun because the Vagabundos said it was illegal and you could go strait
to jail.
We almost got an extended vacation in Mexico. After being released to go
on twice, and their calling their supervisors, we finally got to go.
If you are correct, someone forgot to tell the federalles. I am not
going to risk it this year."

Flare Insert – Any Other Weapon

ATF’s Firearms Technology Branch (FTB) is aware of an insert/sleeve designed to be installed in an Orion 25mm/12 gauge flare launcher that allows the use of conventional ammunition in these flare launchers. FTB was contacted by Orion, who indicated that these flare launchers are not designed to accept standard ammunition, and that the use of an adapter in conjunction with conventional ammunition would likely result in a catastrophic failure of the flare launcher.
