For the good of the order. How To Create A Short Link

Iflyfish - 7-29-2010 at 10:40 AM

While reading this forum I have noticed that people often post lengthy links that get broken and don't work. There is a very simple solution to this.

http://tinyurl.com/create.php

You simply copy and paste your long link to this site and it automaticaly translates your long link into a tiny one.

Or you simply use the tool here intended for inputting links:

Click this button:

...and it'll wrap your link with the and [ /url] brackets (minus the spaces) so that the entire link works.

I have always wondered how you guys did that....and I was still wondering until I hit the reply button....I see that icon now. Don't get it yet but with practice maybe.

Just trying!

O.k., now I get that I can't do this on instant reply, so finally I got this far, but I couldn't cut and paste, so I wrote in this really long address, which creates a probable margin of error on my part, but we will see.

Eli - 7-30-2010 at 10:15 AM

Well, that for sure did not work. Hummmmmm, Will try again later.

What are you trying to do?

Eli - 7-30-2010 at 12:00 PM

I finally found the shorten link button mentioned by Baja Nomad. I than hit it and I wrote in "Just Me", and than I understood the instruction was to add the full link, which I could not cut and paste, instead I had to write the whole dang thing. Than I hit the button to release it and thought I would just get "Just Me" instead I got the whoooooooole link + just me. I am two shakes from figuring this out, but simple soul that I am there is a step or two than I have missed, ni modo.

First, highlight and copy the URL you want to link to. Then, as you write your post, when you get to the place where you want your link inserted, click on the link button (the button BajaNomad pictured.) Type in the name you want to give your link, i.e. Just Me, and hit OK. Now paste the URL you already have copied and hit OK again. Check 'Preview Post' to see if your link is posting correctly.

Eli - 7-30-2010 at 01:24 PM

Tried again, I hit the nomad incript button and I get a message to type in the short name, I type in "Just me", the notice sez type in full url, I try to paste but the little box gives me a BOINK and I can go to cut and paste or back to the forum with out closing the little box.

Oh well, in my case it isn't like I had anything all powerful to post, I was just trying to figure out how the thing work.

Also tried the Iflyfish link, but again, I am missing something in the instructions.

My computer is getting kind of old and grouchy, (a bit like me). I keep saying next year I will trade in for a new one, (glad they can't do that with me jeje).

Thanks anyway you guys.

Get the URL copied first, before you hit the 'link' button.

Not much that can be missed, Eli. C+P the URL which you want to shorten into this box:

------------------------------------------
Enter a long URL to make tiny:
------------------------------------------

It will give you the new, more manageable URL to C+P and use.

Perhaps your problem comes from trying to add something to this, such as "just me."

Iflyfish - 7-30-2010 at 02:42 PM

Step 1. Place your cursor on the link you want to shorten, highlight that link, right click and choose "Copy"
Step 2. Open this site http://tinyurl.com/create.php
Step 3. Place your cursor over the box and right click and choose "Paste"

Hope this helps.

None of this is working for me really. You would have to be sitting here with me to believe it and that ain't going to happen, so I am going to drop it now and go on. Every which way, I get boink, boink, boink. I hate boink!

Okay, maybe it's time to upgrade that computer.

And that red shirt while you're at it.

HELP!!!

I usually have no problem using the button for links, but now the pop-up windows show up, I fill in the blanks and hit OK and nothing appears in the reply window.

I tried the Advanced to just get the tags, and nothing.

I had this problem once before and it was settings on my computer, but I do not remember how to fix it. It is the same in IE and Foxfire??

Doug, or anyone else know which settings I need to fix???

Oh, also cannot get the icons to work either

thanks

How do you do it if you post first and/or don't want to quote someone?

Barbareno - 7-31-2010 at 09:34 AM

Our hoof at 6:30 this morning playing around

Barbareno - 7-31-2010 at 09:37 AM

That wasn't exactly what I wanted to do. If you click on the picture its a movie. I had just wanted the link to show. Oh well.....that's enough. Think I get it.

Eli - 7-31-2010 at 07:35 PM

Dennis, I agree Boinking in high school was fun. Getting repeatedly boinked by your computer is frustrating.

Thanks You guys for all the suggestions, sorry I can't take this any further right now. I am burnt by the boink. I'll try again in a few days.

WOW....That is the longest most bloated link I've ever seen. Here's how it looks after a trip through TINYURL:

The buttons/icons are available on replies, original posts, quoted replies, etc... just not on "quick" replies at the bottom of the same page as the thread.

No - haven't heard of this one before, and am uncertain which local settings need to be "adjusted". Without knowing this, cannot know if it's the same thing for you in IE and Firefox. If it's a local IE setting, than not likely a factor on Firefox unless you set something similar on that software as well.

There's always the possibility it's a security setting with anti-virus/anti-spyware software - which could affect both browsers.

Does NOT sound like a javascript-issue - in needing to be enabled - as it sounds like the popups are working correctly, at least initially.
