TIJUANA — In one of Baja California’s largest law-enforcement shakeups in recent years, 56 state and municipal police officers were arrested and gathered for a lineup Thursday in Tijuana, charged with collaborating with organized crime.

Baja California’s Attorney General, Rommel Moreno Manjarrez, said the detentions were ordered by a federal judge following investigations that in some instances lasted up to two years. He gave no specifics of the cases and did not name any criminal groups that are known to operate in the region.

Moreno said the arrests had no connection to indictments announced last week by the U.S. Attorney’s Office against 43 suspects accused of cooperating with a drug trafficking group headed by Fernando Sanchez Arellano.

The detained officers, in handcuffs and under heavy military guard, stood at the military airport in Tijuana as authorities announced their detentions. Several shouted that they were innocent.

The group included 40 municipal police officers, but it was unclear whether they all came from Tijuana or included forces from other cities. Also detained were 16 state officers, known as ministeriales, who typically investigate common crimes.

Besides these active-duty officers, six former municipal officers were arrested.

Among the detainees was at least one high-ranking Tijuana police commander, Ernesto Silva Frausto.

In announcing the arrests, the attorney general was accompanied by Daniel de la Rosa, Baja California’s secretary of public safety; Gen. Alfonso Duarte Mugica, the top military commander in the region; and Javier Cossio, a representative of the federal attorney general’s office in Baja California.

The detainees are expected to be transported to Mexico City for prosecution.

The rosarito website posted three youtube videos of the group , with many shouting down the charges.

The Zeta interrogation/execution video is better. This guy tells all, then they shoot him. Claimed the Mexican Gov't was behind the nightly release of prisoners from their cells to commit crimes implicating the Zetas. He named names and the other prison wardens resigned the next day...

Brutal Zeta video, Notice the almost cut off ear.

I feel for those people the guy named off...I feel they will meet similar ends.

Yup, they and their families are toast... or pozole. The gov't set-up the Zetas and the Zetas and people are peeed.

That lady Zeta is gnarly eh? She even peels down his ear a bit amused to watch it flop back up. Dollars to donuts she did all the damage and was the one who shot him. Wonder what her street name is? Yikes.

This is one of the videos the Zetas are demanding the Mexican people be allowed to see before they will release the four kidnapped journalists. My family watched ever word. They had been hearing rumors of the gov't being involved (they are from Torreon), but now have the proof.

Once again, the power of YouTube and transparency.

noproblemo2 - 7-30-2010 at 07:37 PM

Pretty scary and then there are those who think all is still the same here, gated communities are no safer than any others anymore and until something happens to them or someone they know will still deny it all is happening...

jeremias - 7-30-2010 at 08:02 PM

That video is pretty chilling. It's alot easier to block all the violence reports out, that is until you see something like that to make it real. And I'm just now moving down there, maybe i need my head checked(hopefully by a doctor).

fishabductor - 7-30-2010 at 08:18 PM

This site that elivestigator posted yesterday is chilling, spooky, gnarly and shows how the situation at the border is very effed up.

Well, you still have to pay property and sales tax.....just no personal income tax.........and why would anyone want to live in Las Vegas...........they have more shootings and homicides in one week than Baja sees in a year

It's pretty cool six feet under no matter where you are. Don't worry about the heat- so long as you live through your retirement plan.

Say what?? Did you get that backwards? There were only 163 murders in the entire state of Nevada in 2008, and there were 575 murders just in the city of Tijuana. Didn't even add in Mexicali, Rosarito, Ensenada and the little towns.

Just thinking that takes my property values to the bottom.
I really couldn't care less about that as long as my dog is safe.

It is being said over Here at AGENCIA FRONTERIZA DE NOTICIAS that these police officers were arrested on the word of El Muletas and El Teo's brother El Chiquilín. The article is in Spanish.

Well, first, I wouldn't put any stock in anything by somebody named "Fulano" (based on past Fulano experiences on this board)..........and second, how many of those reported homicides in Baja (25 in 2009) were tourists or Ex-Pats NOT involved in the drug trade or NOT involved in gangs....??????

Compare the 25 in Baja for the entire year of 2009, when in Clark County, NV (Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas) the total for the FIRST 6 MONTHS of 2009 was 68!!

Scary stuff!!!

lookingandbuying - 8-2-2010 at 09:22 PM

Man, this type of reporting is sure suppressed in the U.S. They would probably have negative numbers of Americans traveling to Mexico if this was ALL out in the main stream media.

Still, even with all of these nasty things happening I will continue to travel to and enjoy all that Mexico has to offer. I will certainly be as careful as possible when heading down and really hope that at some point we see an end to this crazy violence. :(

Many of us live here full time and are un-afraid. Use common sense plain and simple is all, same common sense as if going thru as south L.A. it is overall the same as always
