Top drug lord Ignacio Coronel killed in shootout with Mexican forces
MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) – Top drug lord Ignacio Coronel was killed on Thursday in a gun battle with the Mexican Army in the central-western Jalisco
state, Mexico's Defense Ministry said.
Coronel Villarreal was a close associate of drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the leader of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel. The U.S. government had
offered a $5-million reward for his capture.
Witnesses said that the operation started around 1:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. EST) when elite forces closed roads in Zapopan, a city part of the
Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, and surrounded at least three houses as the soldiers, many arriving by helicopter, cut off communications in the area.
Then an intense battle ensued in which Coronel Villareal was killed, and nine of his men were captured. The raid, carried out by 200 soldiers of the
Army and the Air Force in the Colinas de San Javier neighborhood, lasted nearly two hours.JESSE - 7-29-2010 at 05:32 PM

Based on the lack of success Mexican law enforcement has been having in court (referencing another post), maybe killing the bad guys is their only
viable option to keeping them off the streets.Cyanide41 - 7-30-2010 at 06:46 AM

From another news source:
"Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel, a reputed founder of Mexico's methamphetamine trade, was gunned down trying to escape soldiers in the western city of
Guadalajara.
Mexican authorities said he fired on soldiers as helicopters hovered overhead and troops closed in.
Coronel was a close associate of Mexico's most wanted man, Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and was No. 3 in the organization after
Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.
"Nacho Coronel tried to escape and fired on military personnel, killing one soldier and wounding another," Gen. Edgar Luis Villegas said at a news
conference in Mexico City. "Responding to the attack, this 'capo' died."
The raid "significantly affects the operational capacity and drug distribution of the organization run by Guzman," he added.
Coronel's downfall came amid persistent allegations that Calderon's administration appeared to be favoring the Sinaloa cartel or not hitting it as
hard as other drug gangs."Bajajorge - 7-30-2010 at 11:23 AM
