Planning trip to Ensenada Area & San Quintin - Advice Sought

MsTerieus - 7-31-2010 at 10:08 PM

Dear Nomads,

In anticipation of a possible early retirement in Baja Norte, I have (finally) booked a 1-week trip there (from 8/19-24), to start investigating real estate, and I have a couple of questions:

1) In San Quintin, I want a safe, clean, quiet and cheap room. Of these three options, which would be best: Maria Celeste, Villas de San Quintin, or a SINGLE ROOM at Hotel Los Jardines? (NOTE: I hear that the single rooms at Jardines are dark, small and otherwise not very nice, as opposed to the double rooms there.)

2) Before San Quintin, I'll be staying in a casita in Punta Banda. In addition to looking at real estate, I am tentatively planning to attend the Chili Cookoff on the 21st. Are any Nomads going to be there, and might it be possible to meet up?

3) Though I won't have much free time, are there any "don't miss" things I should do or see in (or south of Ensenada), e.g., anything great to shop for, or a restaurant I just should not miss?

Thanks in advance for any help you can render! :)

Old Mill Hotel

Great steak house there too.

capt. mike - 8-1-2010 at 07:24 AM

tentative plan afoot to be at Old Mill via campo Lorenzo on weekend of Aug 20th.
we have a car stashed at El Socorrito and will try to get up to baja astro's place.

MsTerieus - 8-1-2010 at 10:16 AM

Hi, Captain Mike. I won't get to San Quintin until Sunday afternoon-evening, 8/22. Will you (tentatively) still be around?

MsTerieus - 8-1-2010 at 10:19 AM

McFez -- thanks for the tip. I had looked into the Old Mill earlier -- looked interesting -- but I did not realize they had single rates so low. I'll check it out further!

yeah

It's a very laid back area at the end of a dirt road.....road is in great shape......a few miles off the main highway. Nice walk path there too....with a store...camp ground...fishing. Never had a bad time there...great staff. You'll leave very relaxed.

There is a dirt road that follows the bay southward.....very scenic.

We'll be there 8.11 for a few days. Look 4 my truck logo<www.kissmygrass.com> or member decal of the Vagabonds. deno aka yankeeirishman.......if u r there at that time. Regards 2 u.

Old Mill

bajaguy - 8-1-2010 at 11:49 AM

A little off the main path, but a really great place to stay. they have some older housekeeping units and some newer ones close to the bay.......ask for the one with the fireplace!!!

rts551 - 8-1-2010 at 12:06 PM

I would stay closer to where you were going to look at real estate. That being said, the units at both marie Celeste and the villas are nice.

If you are going to be on vacation stay at Santa Maria Hotel (old La Pinta) or Jardines.

Thank you, rts, for addressing my question directly!

What is that? Is it like the Flu or something?
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

My wife (Bajabound2005) and I have been coordinating the Chili Cook-Off for a couple of years, with the help of lots of friends/Nomads. We are permanent residents of Punta Banda and would be happy to meet you when you're here. U2U me the details of your stay here, and I'll get right back to you.

redhilltown - 8-1-2010 at 04:25 PM

If you are going to stay at the Old Mill get your call/reservations into Nancy right away as you will be going during the height of the fishing season (which ain't so great this year from what I've heard so maybe you don't have to hurry!). The Palomar restaurant in Santo Tomas valley is a nice and fun place to stop and it's right on the highway.

Bajahowodd - 8-1-2010 at 04:29 PM

Is not that the place next to the quaint Pemex?

MsTerieus, I have stayed at both The Old Mill and Jardines many times in the past as have many of the people on here. My suggestion would be to stay at Jardines due to the fact that it has an excellent restaurant that you should not miss that is on the property. As far as the single rooms not being very nice (???), check the room before you get it and if not satisfactory, then request another. They have great customer service and I'm sure they will satisfy you one way or another. Good luck!

You are buying property on the "Bandito Coast"?:barf:

bajamigo - 8-1-2010 at 09:17 PM

Never heard of it.

KASHEYDOG - 8-2-2010 at 09:17 AM

The Hotel Santa Maria in San Quintin is on a beautiful beach that goes for miles. Great for swimming, clamming and driving south for miles. Lots of sea creatures around. It's near Cielito Lindo restaurant and not far from Jardines. It's a large luxury type hotel with beautiful rooms and beach views from every room. Last I heard $40 US a night. Picture enclosed...

The Old Mill is a wonderful spot also. A little more centrally located to San Quintin and has a nice board walk and bay view. Rooms are smaller, more of a fishermans motel. But a great place to stay with Don & Eddies restarunt right next door. Old Mill pic enclosed..... tel 1 800 479 7962

The "old" Old Mill Saloon now goes by a different name, so I hear. This pic from last Sept 09. ;D
If you're stopping in San Diego call me. I'm within 4 miles of the airport in Point Loma.

Good morning, Capt Mike...;D.... That pic above was taken last Sept. on the sun deck of "Don & Eddies" which was featured in the U Tube link further above when it burned down this past April.......:(......:(........:(

Don & Eddieds is right next door to the Old Mill hotel

Pacifico - 8-4-2010 at 07:22 AM

Here is an update from Don Eddie on 7/31/10 off of the Bloody Decks website:

HI this is Don Eddie, I’d like to take the opportunity and use this space on BloodyDecks to thank all my friends, for the moral support that they have given to Don Eddie’s and his personal. Some, like Miguel Zamorra, that donated an ice maker, some others with electrical wiring etc…….. Some of my friends, from Riverside, Pomona, and the entire valley, they just appeared overnight and they said “hey, we are here to help you”, carpenters, electricians and plumbers. I want to thank you all.
It seams that there has been a misunderstanding that Don Eddie’s is closed for business, remember our rooms from this terrible fire has been kept intact and now we have a huge palapa, I think it’s the biggest one in Baja, right on the waterfront. To disperse the rumors, we have our bar open, which is one of the biggest ones around and our kitchen is serving the regular food that we had before, like lobster, shrimp, crab legs, etc. So we are open for business and would love to see you visit us here in San Quintin

God Bless you
Heriberto Marquez
(Don Eddie)

Glad to see he is back open for business!!! :tumble:

KASHEYDOG - 8-4-2010 at 08:13 AM
