Coast Guard San Francisco broadcast two days ago that there were so many whales off the Golden Gate that they were a hazard to navigation. Are they going north or south? Seems an odd time for either direction.

Bruno...any more info on those whales in San Fran? What kind of whales? it is odd.

Not to highjack this thread but to add a little whale ditty...one lovely dawn morning a few miles off La Paz I was just waking up on the deck of the Ferry. When I opened my eyes and gazed out to sea I was startled by a huge splash in the ocean. It was so large my immediate thought was that a plane had crashed.

I jumped up thinking I should report it to the bridge in case no one else had seen it...everyone else seemed to be still asleep. I kept my eyes on the spot looking for debris and saw another explosion...hmm...2 plane crashes in the same spot...nahhhh.

a moment later 2 enormous backs emerged...blue whales!! it was the first time I had ever seen a blue whale and it seemed like 2 minutes went by before the fin finally came into view...those babies are HUGE!!!! The spouts must have been their first exhale after being down a very long time...what an explosion!

Always enjoys your photos! That one under the water is just fantastic---what a thrill to be able to see that and then be able to take such a great picture. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Thank you all for your kind words!! @sis - I know what you mean about blues. What an emotional thing it is to see them for the first time. There are lots of humpbacks and a pretty good pod of blues off the central coast of California right now, feeding on a huge bloom of krill. Blues and humpbacks are seen every day from the whalewatch boats out of Morro Bay.

It was fun writing it and I still get some nice comments from people who stumble onto it. I wrote it primarily for my grandkids and it has served that purpose very well.

I gotta tell you, Ken. I can't put your book down.

It made me think of this fella. I can't remember the last one I saw in the California intertide. We found him on baja's pacific side. Alex wasn't too impressed at first. I reached down deep and pulled the gelatinous mess out into a tide pool. And then the ears came out and he started scooting around. After a fair amount of Alex's attention he started to release his purple dye. It was amazing! The tidepool looked like wine. It was so strong you that it obscured the bottom. I swear, it was like a tub of wine in there.Eventually I pulled him out and back to the sea where he sank and vanished into it's mystery.

No, the pic isn't mine. I just don't know why I lack the sense to photograph the things that matter.

Gorgeous, Ken..simply gorgeous. I 've been visiting many aquariums lately and your photos rival any living visages. Bravo, my friend.

I usually get a very distant photo of the whales we encounter while fishing the Cortez. But, it's better than not seeing them at all. :yes:
