Every morning when I strap on my camera pack, I say I sure hope I use this today. I have learned the hard way, if I dont take it I will see something that needs photographing.
I have way too many bird shots so today when I saw this lovely insect on the beach I was thankful that I had my camera. I could not get the wings from any angle they were so transparent but here is the best that I got.
Wild looking body, eh?

Well, it looks like a dragon fly. But I've never seen one with those flaps on the side.

Can you enhance it, lighten it up and make it bigger? What I can make out it is really weird.

Looks like a dragonfly to me as well...but I'd suggest sending it along to the web's finest insect ID site: http://whatsthatbug.com/

Tons of solid critter info and a great read to boot.

Dragonfly. Maybe a red saddlebag.

There are some BCS dragonflies with possible IDs in the Others section of this site: http://bcsbirds.com

It is a dragonfly with just a little bit more coloring on the second (lower) set of wings. Super nice photo!

One of my fishermen pals says dragonflies, sigarones, are seen just before a rain. His brother says they appear just after it rains. They are both right , of course.

You're so right. The bottom wing is so transparent I couldn't see it's outline.

It's a dragonfly. The wings other than the strong coloring are so transparent they are just hard to see. These guys will fly great distances to feed sometimes so you may still see them even if you don't live anywhere near fresh water.
