Wine-O Wednesday a hit in Asuncion

shari - 8-5-2010 at 09:12 AM

Yesterday was Asuncion's first Wine-O Wednesday gathering and as usual, it was well attended...22 guests not counting the queen candidates family who showed up to rally support and sell some t-shirts. Here is Mr.bajafam with Noyeli.

This idea was the brain child of Chris the plant guy and was embraced by all our amigos...to foster friendship and goodwill among our growing expat community bringing us together in a fun environment to get to know each other...eat, drink and be merry. It was a big success!!

So he and his mother visiting from California hosted the event at the Sunset Casita. Apart from lots of wine tasting, the pot luck food was plentiful and delicious...the brownies were my favorite!

Rumour has it the next one will be at bajagypsies place!!

DENNIS - 8-5-2010 at 12:22 PM

I don't see any wine. Where's the wine? :?:

Cypress - 8-5-2010 at 01:12 PM

woody with a view - 8-5-2010 at 03:57 PM

hint, hint!

DENNIS - 8-5-2010 at 04:53 PM

Winos....with no wine. Can you imagine?

OK...Let's get this party rockin and rollin.

The ice cream man he's a hillbilly fan
Got seventy-eights by hank snow
Walks down the street, shufflin his feet
To a rhythm that only he knows

And Ive seen him in so many places
I saw him the night I was born
In a bourbon street bar, I received my first scar
From an old man so tattered and torn

Chorus:
And the wino and I know the pain of street singin
Like a door-to-door salesman knows the pains of bell ringin
Strange situation, wild occupation
Livin my life like a song

Coffee is strong at the cafe du monde
Donuts are too hot to touch
Just like a fool, when those sweet goodies cool
I eat til I eat way too much

Cause Im livin on things that excite me
Be they pastry or lobster or love
Im just tryin to get by bein quiet and shy
In a world full of pushin and shove

Chorus:
And the wino and I know the pain of back bustin
Like the farmer knows the pain of his pickup truck rustin
Strange situation, wild occupation
Livin my life like a song

Sweet senorita wont you please come with me
Back to the island honey, back to the sea
Back to the only place that I want to be

Chorus:
And the wino and I know the joy of the ocean
Like a boy knows the joy of his milkshake in motion
Strange situation, wild occupation
Livin my life like a song
Yes it's a strange situation, a wild occupation
Livin my life like a song

I did not know you were a Buffett fan, DENNIS?

BTW...Teaser with the wine heading...then no photos.

What's up with that?
If brownies were the focus, call it brownie wednesdays.

there were copious amounts of wine just not in the picture and everyone was not in the pictures..sheesh...

how do you know there was only one local in the pictures rts?? do you know all the locals in our village? the 3 ladies at the table are all local...some of my family were there too...actually everyone there except for Chris's mom and baja fam(who are soon to be locals) have homes here...what does local actually mean??

anyway, everyone had a great time and commented today how nice it was to have a chance to socialize and get to know each other better.

rts551 - 8-5-2010 at 08:49 PM

Wow. I must have hit a nerve. Only saw the one local...the rest were part timers... and a lot of references to the expats. Guess i am not an"amigo" any more.

Maybe by local you mean Mexicans...if so, I count five, four of them being in the first photo. Sirena is Mexican by birth and parentage. In the third photo, sitting next to Sirena is Ariane (sp?), another Mexican. Another couple of Mexicans are off camera.

But you are right about Mexican locals being in the minority at this party (and at most Gringo hosted parties in Asuncion). However, when I go to Mexican hosted convivios, I'm always in the minority. I'm guessing that's how it works for many of us on this board.

shari - 8-6-2010 at 06:48 AM

rts...no problema conmigo amigo...I just didnt understand what your point was or why it matters who is there and who is not??? Also, why would you state there was no wine...just because I didnt take a picture of the bar?? I would think it was pretty obvious wine wednesday would feature wine:rolleyes: your comments were just perplexing.

perhaps you meant that by local, you meant mexican?? or full timers. FYI...There were 7 local mexicanos, 5 local expats who live here full time, 7 part timers, 1 tourist, and bajafam who will be locals...personally, I consider people local when they buy a home, spend time here getting to know people, attend events, support local clubs or teams and when they themselves feel a part of the community. Whether they are here 12 months of the year doesnt matter to me...being part of the community does matter to me and all of the people present love the village.

My point was that you are not from our village and perhaps arent informed on just who is part time and who is full time...perhaps you could tell us how many months a year you need to be "local"? that might clear things up so we may accurately report the status of party goers next time.:lol:
I guess we all have a different opinion of LOCALs..that'all.

this event was planned with the expat community in mind although not in any way a closed affair...most mexicanos dont drink wine and this was a gathering so some of our new residents, visitors of residents...where full & part timers could get to know each other better. It was a nice mix...well over half the winos present are FULL timers although not in the pictures....I was busy tasting wine and filling my face with great food to take pictures and people were spread all over the place...perhaps the next party report needs to include a group photo, full list of who's who and their status., wine list...did I forget anything?
Oh yeah, there were 5 perros present.

rts...you are hereby invited to the next one...bring lots of wine brother!!

People are people first... the color of their skin or the language they speak doesn't make them any more special than other people, IMO.

Before the Mexicans became 'locals', it was the native Indians... So, the norteamericano (Canadian and American) Nomads are just 'newer' locals who have made Asuncion their home... part or full time.

Here in California, on any weekend you can drive by communities where people are speaking Spanish, having parties and BBQs with Mexican music... and you will not see 'non-Mexicans' among them... and they don't feal guilt about not having the English speakers over... nor should they. Freedom of association... Try and see the photos from Asuncion as just people having fun... and not 'white people'...

DENNIS - 8-6-2010 at 07:22 AM

I doubt anything said in this thread would warrent a history lesson, a lecture on morals or one for cultural awareness.
Why is everyone overreacting to what amounts to nothing?

David K - 8-6-2010 at 07:25 AM

Putting down a nice post of a Nomad group event because someone didn't see enough 'brown' in the photos is pretty lame, don't you think Dennis?

I didn't see anything about this being a Nomad group event.
There was no comment made concerning the guests that would call for one of your patented, instructive scoldings. The comments I saw were no more than observations.
How about keeping your version of political correctness out of it. It still remains no more than a party report.

shari - 8-6-2010 at 07:46 AM

there were more dogs than nomads there:lol::lol:

you know what's kinda funny...as I was remembering which mexicanos were present at the party...I noticed that ALL of them are white...osea...gueros..mexicanos who have rather white skin...not brown...Arce's are mostly gueros and some have blue and green eyes...Juan gets annoyed at the military checkpoints when they ask him if he speaks spanish!!

Now back to party planning...today, you are all invited to the opening of Sirena & Adrian (both white mexicanos) little Bistro taqueria..whoever you are and wherever you are from!!!

Well, I'm not going to get into the debate about who's who in Asuncion, but I am curious as to how it could be the first and, as usual, well attended? We do hope to make it to some of the future gatherings though.

As for determining from photos a local versus a non-local, Linguine has cousins born in MX that have blond hair, freckles and green eyes. Somewhere I heard that you can't judge a book by it's cover. Or maybe it was you can't judge a wine by the box it came in. Whatever.

I have read that the Passion Fruit is the fruit that Shari makes her famous margaritas from, pithya??sp??. I just got some and made a syrup of them, not as sweet as Tuna, the fruit of the nopal cactus. The tuna, in the form of a syrup, are great in margaritas.Magnificent magenta color.

Iflyfish

David K - 8-9-2010 at 11:12 PM

Passionfruit and Pitaya (Pitahaya) are not related at all. Passionfruit grows from a vine in tropical regions (popular in Hawaii). Pitaya (in Baja) comes from two types of cactus:

Pitaya Dulce is from the upright Organ Pipe cactus. Found beyond San Borja to the La Paz region.

Pitaya Agria is the low, sprawling or creeping cactus seen along Hwy. 1 beginning past El Rosario.

Pitayas from La Paz being sold along the highway in San Quintin. On the left, the cactus spines have been scraped off.

BajaCactus (Antonio) shows how to peel the fruit.

David K shows how to eat it! :light::lol::cool:

Skin is paper thin, peels back easily (once the spines are scraped off). Inside the baseball size fruit is one big delicious globe... texture reminded me of eating a cherry popcycle. Seeds are tiny, like strawberry...

Passionfruit:

Has a thick, leather-like skin... inside is a seedy pulp with a citrus-like tang flavor. Seeds are larger and may be swallowed or seperated out. There are many varieties...
The common one we have in Southern California is the Purple Passionfruit (Passiflora edulis)... about the size of a golf ball or slightly bigger.

There are a couple varieties in Baja California Sur.

Good one David!

What I got is Dragon Fruit.

http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/ncnu02/v5-378.html

I have been looking for Pitayas but have not found them up here. I have made syrup with both Tuna, Nopal Cactus Fruit, and now Dragon Fruit. The Tuna is good in Margaritas, tastes somewhat like sweet cucumber and has an amazing magenta color, people have liked them.

Thanks for posting this clarification.

Iflyfish

David K - 8-10-2010 at 08:55 AM

Ah yes... Dragonfruit... also called Pitaya (to add to the confusion)!

Popular in asia... grows above ground on a vine-like plant that lives in trees and never touches soil (like Spanish moss).

shari - 8-10-2010 at 09:25 AM

You can bet we will be serving pithaya goodies when it comes into season this fall!! they are sooo yummy and beautiful.

In Hawaii they make a wonderful passion fruit curd called “lilikoi”. Make it similar to lemon curd recipe. Pour it on ice cream, cheesecake or just out of the jar. Yum, Yum.
