The Doctor here tells me "Not yet" When it is he expects it all to go Black Market anyway. They will just write a perscription & that will get it. So far none of the pharmacias here have been sited for selling.

With a twist, a Gringo came back to the US
from Algodones, with perscription meds,
US Customs fined him $2000, for not
having a US Perscription. I realize this has
always been the US Custom Law,
but seems rarely enforced

The tipping point that resulted in the new law is that there is anecdotal evidence that being able to get antibiotics without prescription, thereby long ago making it common in Mexico for the people to scarf drugs whenever the have a sniffle, resulted in significant unnecessary deaths during the H1N1 outbreak. If a doctor was consulted, it would have certainly not resulted in a prescription for antibiotics that would have no affect on viral infections, but rather treatment for a virus.

In Mexico, there are written prescriptions and there are written prescriptions. You won't be seeing too many of the type written for controlled products such as Valium. It's a three piece document and costs the physician each time he writes one.
I doubt this will be used for antibiotics.
The less controlled scrip is written for just about everything. They're more like reminder notes and I'm guessing that's what will be discussed and used.....for a while anyway. It won't last. The drug manufacturers lobby is stronger than the doctors lobby.

Sooo? The doctor just writes the perscription & charges you extra for writing? The first time I ever got meds here this happened. Told him what we wanted , he had it ," said you will need a perscription" Okay so he wrote it got the meds off the shelf & charged $22 for the meds & $10 for the perscription!!!
I expect this is what my doctor here was saying will frequently happen after this law is enforced.
If not the folks in Algadones are going to be losing a LOT of Bucks!!

Only in scam circumstances, like around the border.
Things are different here, as you know, and the local populace has been doctoring themselves forever.
In the US, people go to a doctor for a bandaid. Here, they buy meds and needles and take care of themselves with knowledge from past experiences of theirs or their neighbors. That's how they do it.

In my opinion, nothing will change and if it does, it won't last long.

I realize in most cases they should require a prescription, but it is also nice to be able to buy antibiotics when you really need them. Case in point....I was in San Juanico for the NORRA Mexican 1000 and came down with a nasty sinus infection, which I tend to get from time to time. I was able to buy a general antibiotic at the tiny farmacia in town, and it helped tremendously. The following day we were doing the long drive back to San Diego, and it would have been awful if the infection was still hammering away at my cabeza!

The overuse of antibiotics may one day render them useless. Every year more bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, it's becoming a serious public health problem. They should be tightly controlled so people don't take them every time they think they are coming down with something.

That's exactly why the government is attempting to limit the availability sans prescription. I'm guessing that major retailers such as Walmart and the other big box stores will comply. But the so-called mom & pop farmacias will still sell without prescription unless and until they get caught and fined.

Something really bothers the heck out me about getting a $2,000 fine. While I agree that there has been excessive consumption of antibiotics, not all drugs are antibiotics. Where are the "get government off our backs" and the "Get rid of big brother" and the "anti nanny state" people on this one?

My intuition is telling me that maybe big business (pharmaceutical companies) and the medical practice protectionists directly benefit from this enforcement. I wouldn't make this comment except for the fact that a $2,000 fine is excessive. I have a thought, why aren't the pharmaceutical companies who have over supplied and the physicians who have over prescribed financially penalized? This is not an "out there" kind of concept. It can be done. Use the revenues collected toward discovery of such practices -- there, the cost for investigation and fining is paid for.

When common antibiotics are no longer effective, then we will be forced to use very expensive substitutes and new drugs that have yet to be invented. That is where big pharma will benefit.

According to my uncle, a doctor, the US requires a prescription for antibiotics because of liability concerns.

Our newest Pharmacia just yesterday told my husband the new law will not really affect their pharmacia, & they will be having a Dr to write perscritions on hand.Just as our Dr here predicted.
With the business they have in Algadones Im betting there will be MORE than one Dr.

Although I've always stocked ahead, because of the impending uncertainty of the new law, I stepped up that stockpiling and now have so many different Antibiotics in such quantity North and South of the border that they'll reach their expiration date long before needed.

But, they were cheap to buy. No Problema.
