I recently asked why a BURRITO is called a BURRITO elsewhere on Baja Nomad..... I have always been under the impression that long ago, burritos were really made from burros. Some answers I received are totally plausible:

Woody= burritos are animals that carry lots on their backs ergo burrito

CP= a small package is a burrito

Anyone else know for sure why a BURRITO is called a BURRITO ?

That was a good question....

80 years ago or so, Burrito did not exist in the Spanish vocabulary. It was a word invented by anglo-americans. Why? Long ago, mexicans would carry their tacos on donkeys to sell to the anglo-american tourist that came to TJ. Anglos started to say " burrito" because the spanish word " burro" means donkey, and now most hispanic and anglo-americans believes burrito is an acutal word. Now a days, Mexicans have adapted the word burrito into their vocab. Even though it does not exist in the language system in Mexico.

when I asked some old timers on ranches around here, they told me that burritos were originally made with machaca de burro...dried meat of a small burro, hence burritos...burro meat was a food staple before cattle were introduced in this desert area and machaca was made because it didnt need refridgeration...burro machaca is still very very popular today and highly sought after for its wonderful taste. Burros are raised around here for meat and eaten at family gatherings. The meat is far superior to the free range cattle here...the burro meat is tender and sweet because of what the burros eat and the beef is tough and stringy.

Before that they had Empanadas and some varieties were similar were to todays Burritos except the raw flour dough was wrapped around the filling and then baked. :yes:

it is almost lunch time, i think i will step out and get a carne asada or california burrito from robertos (one of the san diego robertos). i won't need to eat for next 24 hours :lol:

gringo style burritos cause problems in restaurants here because our burritos are skinny little buggers...so sometimes people are really disappointed when their food arrives....they are expecting those gigantic burritos they serve in the states.

Rolling up a filling in a wrap seems very ubiquitous around the world. Dolmates, cabbage rolls, spring rolls, sausage rolls. Makes food fun and neat enough to eat on the go, say riding a burro!

I grew up in San Diego. When I lived there 30+ years ago burritos just had meat in them, no cheese, beans, guac, etc. In Nor Cal where I now reside burritos are filled with a choice of meat or a chile relano(sp) and all the goodies-rice, beans, guac, sour cream, cheese, etc. They are all good. I used to go to place called Chuey's on Fridays for abalone ranchero. That was my fav except for Azteca on Rosecrans and maybe El Indio's.

now in Brasil we have wrapped many different foods - one of my favs is a chicken thigh wrapped in a flour dough and then baked = coxinha de galinha (pronounced ko- shinya day galinya) . soooooo sooooo soooo good.

and Les makes a Polish stuffed potato dumpling which the Russians also make = pierrogi. melts in your mouth.

time to get in the kitchen - we haven't had breakfast yet ...
