Asians are the source of a 15 percent increase in tourism along the so-called tourist sector of Tijuana, according to Andrés Méndez Martínez, coordinator of the tourist-business association known as Ceturmex.

In a daily Frontera article, Méndez said that of the few foreign tourists who have been arriving this summer, the majority have been Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, traveling in large tour groups and bused in from California, wherein they spend the bulk of their vacation. The most common itinerary is a day-trip from California.

It is common to see groups of 30 or more Asian tourists gathered at the trolley stop in San Ysidro, being briefed on the laws and culture of Mexico before crossing the border.

Recently, a large group of camera-clad Asian tourists was seen moving through the notorious Zona Norte nightclub sector, men and women shyly wending their way through the taco stands, nightclub barkers, hustlers, and hookers.

No joke there.
I was talking to a Paramedic and he told me some stories about Asian drivers and the wrecks they were involved in. Once, when consoleing a driver as he looked over his totally wrecked car on the freeway, the driver responded with a grin, "No problem. Practice car."

:O

MitchMan - 8-10-2010 at 12:21 PM

I don't think that Asians are bad drivers, I just think that they are not in a hurry like we Americans are. I think that Asians have the discipline to always leave early enough to drive the speed limit or a bit slower and get to their destination in time unlike we Americans. Also, they have the maturity at all ages to not be competitive with a car on the road. They don't care if your car is faster than theirs is, or if you want to drive faster than them. They are all mature enough not to care about competing that way.

I am a typical American driver. I get very irritated at Asian drivers. But the fault and flaw is mine, not theirs.

shari - 8-10-2010 at 12:26 PM

I once worked for an ophthamologist who often was called to testify in traffic accident cases involving Asians as it is medically proven that thier peripheral vision is much reduced and have caused accidents relating to problems with blind spots...word.

MrBillM - 8-10-2010 at 01:27 PM

As Charlie often said.

A couple of weeks ago I saw what looked like a "MADE IN MEXICO" lime squeezer at a Soriana

but...alas!

It had a label that denoted the item was made in "CHINA"

One of Mexico's greatest trademarks is now being imported!

The Altar of the sacred lime squeezer has been desecrated? Say it ain't so Udo! :(

Asians may be bad drivers; but, I have heard of gringos causing wicked bicycle accidents in Beijing.

Never Enough Orientals

MrBillM - 8-13-2010 at 08:51 AM

No matter how many, 30 minutes later you're looking for more ?

Cyanide41 - 8-13-2010 at 01:59 PM

I was recently thinking how I see more chinos than gringos in TJ.

irenemm - 8-13-2010 at 09:40 PM

If they are in TJ it is to get pictures of all the Mexican goods to make them there.
Was in Ajiji about 3 years ago and a group of Chinese wear on a tour bus stopped at the small family operation to make table clothes all hand woven beautiful stuff. The girls there said they bought 1 piece between the whole bus load. Soon I am sure the beautiful tablecloths will have made in china too.
Never drive in Garden Grove, Westminster or Anaheim. They will kill you for sure. Very rude many of them in the Costco Garden Grove. Maybe because I was one of a few gringos in there.

Udo - 8-14-2010 at 07:37 AM

During the Tequila Expo in October, the Mexicoach that I take to and from TJ, has always been filled to capacity (standing room) with orientals.
Did not see much of any shopping bags of stuff though.

CHEAP TOURISTS!

Adventures in Zipperland

MrBillM - 8-14-2010 at 09:58 AM

Maybe there was just something about Irene they didn't like.

I just came back from Three days in the Big Orange. Missed Garden Grove and Westminster, but Drove, Shopped, Ate and Hoteled in the Anaheim/Fullerton/Stanton/La Mirada area filled with shops advertising in a multitude of Oriental languages. The Orientals of whatever variety at each commercial location, especially Wendy's and Arby's, were courteous. Maybe all the bad ones were at Costco.

Maybe true in US, but in Korea they are the most agressive drivers I've ever seen :P

Debra - 8-14-2010 at 12:27 PM

Mitch: Have you ever been in Japan?, they drive like meaniacs.

Mr Bill: "orientals" is a term used for decorations. "Asian" is the correct term for the people.

Using the CORRECT Bait ?

MrBillM - 8-14-2010 at 01:17 PM

ONLY Liberals obsess over "PC" terms and that's why it's SO enjoyable to use those that aren't. It's the best bait there is for trolling. Nothing seems to wind up a Lefty quicker.

Besides, they were Orientals when I was young and not so young.

The most prevalent argument I've seen from the "PC r ME" crowd is that Oriental (eastern) is a EUROPEAN term. That bunch of conquerors who are so reviled in PC Fantasy Land. A secondary argument is that Oriental groups so many diverse peoples together as one while Asian .......... Hm ?

Also, ASIA, on the other hand, is .......... GREEK and, uh, well, uh.......

have a Liberal explain it.

And then irritate them by using the other.

MitchMan - 8-14-2010 at 03:12 PM

Never been to Japan.

With regard to "PC": If someone from Iran prefers to be referred to as Persian, I will refer to them as Persian, if a Japanese, or a Chinese, or a Korean, or a Vietnamese prefer being referred to as Asian instead of Oriental - or vice versa - I will use the term they prefer. If that's being "PC", so be it. I don't think it is a matter of being a lib or dem or con or a pub (pronounced "peeooob" - similar to cube), I think it is a matter of being considerate and respectful - isn't it?

[Edited on 8-14-2010 by MitchMan]

R-E-S-P-E-C-T ?

MrBillM - 8-14-2010 at 04:00 PM

OK. But, that only pertains to personal interaction. I, too, will refer to someone I know as whatever they prefer, but who has the right to say WHAT term should be used in reference to a group in the Third-Person ? WHO is the spokesman for a racial or ethnic group ?

Nobody.

I used to refer to my (Half Japanese/Half Mexican) Girlfriend in Indio as my "Nisei Chica", which was OK with her, but she pointed out that it was her father, not she, who was Nisei.

Once (and only once), I jokingly (in my mind referencing her form) called her my little "Buddha" Babe. Although it didn't go over well, luckily she took it as a religious reference and pointedly told me her family were ALL Christian.

I left it at that.

Debra - 8-15-2010 at 11:32 AM

Sorry MrBill, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. PC? not really, just passing on information that was given to me by my Japan born, and Korean born sister-in-laws. isn't that how we learn, sharing information?

And, I'm sure you aren't calling me a libral, if so, you sure don't know me very well. I'm only a libral when I tease DK. But, my politics are my own business, you never see me getting into that bees nest on this formum or anyother. What would be the point?
