David K - 7-25-2004 at 08:10 AM

The bigger pueblos in Baja, yeah, you can keep them, thank you very much.....old Baja........heaven.

Tommy A - 7-25-2004 at 08:39 AM

The biggest problem with Baja is that I'm not there right now

Bob H - 7-25-2004 at 08:41 AM

OH, Surfer Jim... give me a washboard road any day! :bounce:

DanO - 7-25-2004 at 09:38 AM

I'm with Bob. Washboards are G-O-O-D. They're like filters.

elgatoloco - 7-25-2004 at 09:44 AM

No booze on election day. :moon:

PEMEX

The Gull - 7-25-2004 at 09:53 AM

That is what is bad about Baja.

David K - 7-25-2004 at 10:00 AM

In what way Gull? No free enterprise competition, crooked operators, not enough stations... ???

Pescador - 7-25-2004 at 10:03 AM

The worst thing is when you are walking down the street and a group of Norteamericanos are drinking too many beers in a street side bar, dressing with way too much flash, talking way too loud, being way too obnoxious, showing off their spanish by adding an " El " in front of the English word and an "O" on the end, flirting with everything in skirts, and smoking cheap cigars they just bought from the corner mini-market: and somebody asks you in Spanish if you are with that group?

Washboard Roads

Bajasurf - 7-25-2004 at 10:16 AM

I love washboard roads. My Cd player that hadn't worked in almost 4 years magically played music after bumping down a road somewhere far south of the border. The next day my drivers side window that had been stuck in the down position moved up and has worked flawlessly since. Washboard or cash to fix? Gimmee the washboard any day.

Packoderm - 7-25-2004 at 10:34 AM

The worst thing is the long drive down I-5 to get there. I sometimes say that I-5 is the hell I have to pay to get to Baja, and Los Angeles is where I meet the devil himself (traffic).

The Gull - 7-25-2004 at 11:00 AM

Yes to all and add one more, adding naptha to the mix in all stations around TJ and Rosarito to "bulk up" the volume.

David K - 7-25-2004 at 11:16 AM

Okay, I gotta ask, what is naptha? I will be glad when BajaCactus can give us some insight!

Baja Surf

jrbaja - 7-25-2004 at 11:24 AM

:lol: Your vehicles sound like my vehicles. And that's hysterical. Many many times things have magically started working after having some sense rattled into them. Gotta love it !!
Worst thing about Baja, Dengue Fever and flies in some areas.

Not sure what you're getting at, or if there's a different meaning you intended for "naptha"... as most gasoline components are from the broad area of distillates called naphthas/napthas. Pretty much all modern reformulated gasolines are a blend of several refinery streams, including naphtha/naptha components.

I would be curious to know what you've witnessed, or what you're aware of in this regard to the gasoline near the border region -- if not elsewhere.

no DEET .....

cristobal - 7-25-2004 at 12:46 PM

The one thing that I hate about BAJA is ..... being up at PUERTO REFUGIO on GUARDIAN ANGEL island after a DIVE and sgueezing out my last ounce of insect repellant from the bottle ... and knowing the JEJENES (no-seeums)..... are going to EAT ME for lunch when this stuff wears off .......

:bounce::O:moon::moon::moon::fire:

tim40 - 7-25-2004 at 02:04 PM

That Baja isn't more difficult to get into/out of AND the the always well over blown rumors related to the dangers of travelling in Baja are fading. Ah, I to long for the day that when you told your neighbor you were driving from LA to La Paz they looked at you with horror in their faces and the locked their doors behind as you left....

cuban and other good cigars sold sll over

capt. mike - 7-26-2004 at 09:54 AM

- none of which have been properly stored!! then they waNT TO CHARGE TOP buck to the stupid tourists. $10-$15 for a cigar and it tastes like caca! ha!! i bring my own in a portable humi.

note - that above criticism doesn't include the few good stores in some cities like Ensenada and the cape zone.

TOPES

How many of us remember the first tope you ever encountered in Baja? It felt like my transmission was going to fall out. That was 30 years ago next to the town Triunfo. Fortunately my wife figured out on the first one that the words were related to the bump.

They are way better these days. You get a series of smaller bumps (tremblador, or something like that) before you hit the real thing. But I still manage to hit one on each trip.

They come in a variety of forms. The town of Pueblo San Lucas (next to San Lucas Cove) simply has these massively thick ropes laying across the road next to the school. They work suprisingly well.

Bob H - 7-26-2004 at 10:47 AM

There is a topes that I hit hard going to Playa Tecolote out of La Paz that ripped one of my truck airbags apart. It sounded like a small bomb going off!

TOPES...

Natalie Ann - 7-26-2004 at 10:49 AM

I sure remember discovering topes. It was our first trip to Baja, plane had landed very late afternoon in Cabo and DH was driving the tiny rental car fast in order to reach La Paz before dark. I'm reading road signs and looking in my little dictionary for translations. So I'm thumbing through pages muttering "tope, tope" when ka-boom!, heads slam into car roof. Oh yeah, tope. One word we'll never forget. :o:wow::no::lol:

Mexitron - 7-26-2004 at 12:15 PM

Worst thing about Baja is going home!

Not if you live here

jrbaja - 7-26-2004 at 01:40 PM

hahahahahahaha. Lest we not forget, there is still a BAD tope about a mile or less south of the Mulege bridge that will rattle yer cage !

worst thing

bajalera - 7-26-2004 at 01:59 PM

So hard to find buttermilk for my favorite pancake recipe.

bajalera

wilderone - 7-26-2004 at 02:21 PM

Buttermild substitute: 1 cup milk w/ 1 tsp. of vinegar.
Worst thing? Canadians in general
and anyone else driving 25-40 ft. motorhomes on Mex. 1.
Next to the worst thing? Being anywhere around Capt. Mike smoking a cigar.

Wilderone

capn.sharky - 7-26-2004 at 05:11 PM

Gee---I hope the canadians don't get the idea that we don't just love their company. I love following a Canadian Caravan down the Baja. These people stop on curves and stop when another big rig or truck is coming the other way. Why they don't get rear ended is a mystory to me. Is that how Cannucks drive in the North? Another thing that puzzles me is when they pull off for the night---they never leave their motorhomes to look around. The Mexicans say they are muy coto (cheap). Maybe living in all that snow does something to the brain. Oh well it takes all kinds, I guess.

bajalera - 7-26-2004 at 05:23 PM

Been there, done that, Wilderone. No way is the milk/vinegar or lime juice substitute the same.

Lera

Dave - 7-26-2004 at 05:46 PM

Have you tried soured milk? We save spoiled milk to be used in baking. Have used it for pancakes and waffles too.

Markitos - 7-26-2004 at 09:31 PM

ICE
2 days later ..... just like dust ....poof it's gone..
Come to think of it, so is the beer ... guess it's not that bad a deal anyway ... never mind

hey wilderone.....?????

capt. mike - 7-27-2004 at 09:20 AM

which part of that do find more offensive? being around me or being around the cigar??:bounce::smug::cool::coolup::spingrin:

cigars you may know about and for which you might have a negative prediliction. You and i have never met though, we only know we differ on a few issues. so how do you know we couldn't have a drink and enjoy a non confrontational discourse?

JESSE - 7-27-2004 at 12:00 PM

1.-Developers who are here to make a quick buck.

2.-Ilegal Fishermen

3.-Drugs

4.-Trash

5.-Goverment ( same as Police)

6.-Mexicans who dont give a sh**

7.-Americans who always refer to "back in the states we do it like this"

8.-Sewage

That's very good Jesse!
