road conditions from border to Loreto

ldo_marlin - 8-10-2010 at 07:16 PM

I am a long time Baja traveler but have not been down since late 2008 (newborn). I am planning a drive down trip from OC to Loreto 8/19. Would appreciate any recent road condition reports to Loreto. Any changes in the military inspection procedures/site since the drug problems?

Thx

Came up 2 weeks ago. No major problems. All construction is well marked and usually flagged. Check points and routines have been about the same for several years. You will be amazed at a few changes in the road. Vizcaino is 6 lanes in the style of Constitcion. There is a lot of widening in process and done south of Maneadero. Bridges are sprouting up where some of the big ziggies are/were.

A cakewalk. Standard procedures. (As of two weeks ago.)

Depends which highway... Tecate south (Hwy. 3) has a 14 mile construction zone for road widening just south of town... several miles of detours... Recommend go west on Mex. 2 to the Blvd. 2000 to Popotla (south Rosarito).

South of Maneadero towards Santo Tomas they are widening Hwy. 1 and again just south of El Rosario.

Detours around washed out bridges from last January are paved.

welcome. just take it easy and not be in a hurry and drive only during the day. still open range in many parts and no shoulder.
Take you time and enjoy the adventure.
stop and see us and give yourself a stretching.
Drive careful and have fun.

Thanks for the infos! Call me crazy but i drive at night. I find it safer than driving in the daytime. Less vehicles/animals/people on the road. Just make sure you have someone riding shotgun awake watching the road with you.

You will find the road better than it was two years ago: better pavement, and wider, sometimes even with shoulders.

I also like driving at night, but not between twilight and 10 PM. I wait until the people with no headlights/tail-lights have made it home, if possible. Also the people with mis-adjusted headlights are mostly gone by 10PM in rural areas.

That said, I also make sure my antilock brakes are in perfect working order, and I don't go over about 50mph. Some of those cows look a lot like highway...

Yeah, i love the "is that a motocycle coming?" question. It's always a car with a bad headlight :)

Just got back to the US. Great Fishing trip to Loreto. Road condition overall was good with lots of on-going bridge work (after Ensenada to Loreto) . The military checkpoints were at the same spots. They did check the vehicle 3 times coming down (they never did this in the past. Only north bound). And all check points kept a log of license plate, name , address.... Magna gas was 8.13 per liter
