Hola Amigos, I will be visiting BOLA during the last week of September. We will be bring 2 14' sit on top kayaks for fishing and fun. I've kayak
fished the Bay before and know about keeping an eye on the wind and we've caught lots of bay bass but this time I would like to target larger fish. I
can comfortably paddle 5-6 miles with mild wind and currents to deal with but I would prefer to stay within 2 miles of camp (Archelon) or wherever we
launch from. Are there any spots you can suggest and the gear I would need? I carry enough emergency gear to bivy for a night if needed and always
have a charged up radio. I don't plan on ever needing this stuff but it's better to have and not need then to need and not have. In the past, we've

Since you are experienced with kayaking and BLOA you know how fast the wind comes up to gale like strength. Even with a radio it is really hard for
any rescue boat to find you in storm conditions. My 2¢ would be, if you have to go that far let the panga fishermen know you'll be out there and

I would advise a quick trip over to Smith,at the north end you can get some nice fish often and there is always a lee side handy,I spent the better
part of a nite on the east side waiting out a hell of a blow,not much fun but better than sinking

Here is what I've done for Kayakers in my camp; take them to the Don Juan Cove area in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. Try to make a
deal with a pangero that's going south to do that. Paddle out to Punta Malo trolling along the way. Inside the cove for bass and sometimes
firecracker jurel. Fish the shore west of the cove until it turns in to the south bay and a mile or so south towards Rincon. This area generally has
a lot of firecracker yellowtail this time of year that are a hoot on 20# setups.
Hide out in the cove if a west comes up and look for boats coming round the point heading home in the afternoon - hook a ride with them.

Actually, these are well known spots that anyone would figure out in a week's worth of fishing, if only just watching where everyone else goes. Of
course, we all have some reliable spots that we don't share; just wouldn't be prudent.

What great information. I'll be trolling some 3-5" Rapalas and Jigging 6X Salas blue/white. Any other rigs I should use? Maybe bucktails?Santiago - 8-13-2010 at 10:15 PM
Lots of plastics for the cove. Smaller irons, in the 3 oz range, work well with 20# rigs in the areas of the map. You'll be in 50' - 100' of water.
I prefer jr Salas. I have caught small dorado at the Pt Malo reef this time of year - even on crocodiles. Never had much success with bucktails - I
