I would like to try fishing from the beach near my home at PDO in San Felipe and would like to know:
1. Is it a waste of time
2. Is there a better place near by, Puertocios?
3. What type of bait or jig

Mussel, squid, clams... incoming high tide... entrances to lagoons or bays good... corbina, croaker, sea bass.
Once the tide begins to drop, the fish are gone.
Not sure what PDO is... but the other place is Puertecitos.
Surf fishing was awesome years ago... then commercial fishermen began netting the coast and cleaned it out... Perhaps when you try it will be better.wilderone - 8-18-2010 at 07:49 AM

My guess is that the tide flucuation will ace you out. Go south - yes, around Puertecitos, some of the coves a little south of there with rock
jetties so you can cast out. Fish an incoming tide, with spoons, or mussels for bait - something similar.Bajajorge - 8-18-2010 at 08:46 AM
I never tried it, but my neighbor brought home dinner some 2-3 times a week.
When the tide is coming in, wade in up to about your knees. Cast out with a surf rod with a (don't know the name) 4-5 inch silver spoon with treble

We fished from the shore about 10 miles south of SF. Wish I could remember the marker. We caught all kinds of fish including an eel and a few

There was a post recently from a resident
of a place he called Shell Beach, I assume
it is near DK's Shell Isle, Percebu. He has an ATV he fishes the
beach with, he mentioned he was going for
Corvina, which at times is fairly abundant
in the SF area. Maybe he will respond with
what lure, bait he was using. Agree with the
poster on throwing a chrome spoon, a
Krockidile, maybe 1 size down from a 1 oz.
Try to get one with a prizum design or a
blue stripe. All I've seen picked off the beach
in SF are rays. Since the road is good to Puerticitos,
find something to float on, like a kayak.

'Shell Beach' is at Punta Chivato (near Mulege)... see posts by Russ.
'Shell Island' is what I named the barrier island about 33 years ago is also called 'Shell Beach' by some local gringos, and they mean the same
place... between Rancho (Laguna) Percebu and Bahia Santa Maria.
There are no 'residents' on Shell Island except for a seasonal commercial fishing camp on occaision. Shell Beach (Pta. Chivato) has several residents,

Go as far south as you can from San Felipe if you can. As mentioned the road is now paved quite a distance. Look for rocky outcroppings for trigger
and bass and just about any sandy area for Corvina. Black Mountain is a good area but I'm not sure of the beach access with the new road. Dropper loop
rig with some cut bait or squid and yes, chrome Krocs. Corvina come and go so you may have to cast for a while...bring some lead heads and plastics
to change it up a bit. As David K mentioned the last half of a rising tide is your best bet. As the road improves I'm afraid the Mexicali locals will
continue more and more to come down with nets and cars full to catch---and keep---anything that they can. Quite depressing to see them take bags full
of 5" fish as I have more than once. There will be a direct correlation between the road being paved and the quality of the fishing all along the
coast to Gonzaga. Better hurry!

Here's my two cents worth of a response: Fishing isn't happening in or near San Felipe. Just isnt worth the time. Some will disagree with me on this.
If you go down to Huerfanito on the new pavement...it's a fast tract there! El Huerfanito has a "private" rusty establishment there. Look for the
first road off the pavement once you pass the mountain.....head towards a small group of houses. There's a ex Marine guy there acting as a
caretaker....give him some conversation and $20. You got a little shade there, a very good boat ramp (for low tide too!). Fish from behind the
"Rock" to northward towards Puertocios (there are two nice shallow bays in that section). You'll always will have catch.

I am aware of Playa de (del?) Oro... I didn't have a clue what PDO meant... You must be a pilot, as I have the same issues with Capt. Mike who uses

12 lb test with a 3/4 or 1 oz Sidewinder, Rattletrap, etc. something flashy. Work the tides 2 hours before and 2 hours after along the beach. 15'
tides or higher will work. Live or dead bait will get you rays. Forget it unless you are boat fishing. There is fishing south of SF. Forget SF. It is
not what it was 20 years ago, but we still get fish. The good spots I reserve for myself!!
