Rosarito to install 1,786 parking meters... still stuck on stupid?

Woooosh - 8-21-2010 at 10:07 AM

Hard to believe tourism has rebounded so strongly they are confident enough to charge for parking. State of the art parking meters? HUH?

The project will begin with 1,786 to be installed in the dining district of Puerto Nuevo, followed by Downtown and then the North region.

Stick a fork in Rosarito... she's done. (and are there really 1786 places to park there?)

Years ago, they had them in Ensenada. They were a joke.

"The project will begin with 1,786 to be installed in the dining district of Puerto Nuevo, followed by Downtown and then the North region."

Where does the money come from to pay for these things? This has to be an expensive idea.

Just like we will do here in November, they can throw out the bums who raise taxes and fees when the economy is sinking! "stuck on stupid" is right!

Woooosh - 8-21-2010 at 11:01 AM

hope they take quarters. Maybe this is just a ploy to get us to exchange our dollars to pesos for meter change...

I'm quoting myself, but a question just occured to me. Would it be feasible for a city to sell a concession such as this plan to a private business?
I think some places in the states do that with the red light cameras.

Loco Meters

lookingandbuying - 8-21-2010 at 11:14 AM

Oh yeah...am sure most, if not all, of the money placed into these meters will be gone before the city see's a Peso!!!

Sounds like they have more idiots running the government down there than we have up here, go figure?

:?::?::?:

They had better cement those suckers in real good. ;D

Bajahowodd - 8-21-2010 at 01:14 PM

Why in the world would any of the business owners in Puerto Nuevo be in favor?

That didn't stop Cool-Hand Luke.

The cost of MORDIDA just went down.....that's a good start.

"hope they take quarters"

Ha! that's a great consideration - they won't. But almost everyone who goes to Puerto Nuevo is a visitor with US dollars. There used to be several little parking lots with flat-fee parking - I'm sure a lucrative business for them. So some real estate deals took place and the parking meters are going in so the city govt. gets all the benefit from parking?? Puerto Nuevo used to be a nice unique place to go - the lobster was cheap, the ambiance of the ocean close by, the mariachis, dirt roads - like a found treasure. Parking meters are so offensively norte americano. Instead, there should be one or two staffed, guarded parking lots, and no cars allowed in the village, so as to preserve the uniqueness of this place.

DENNIS - 8-22-2010 at 08:22 AM

So....I wonder what it will be; parking tickets or this:

The meters just make it an official tourist trap. That's all. It's been decades since Puerto Nuevo was "authentic anything" or even a good value for frozen out-of-season lobster. We save the gas and hassle and go to Popotla for a more authentic and less expensive fishing village experience.

I can see where you MIGHT think that...

But I would expect that parking violators will soon discover otherwise.

tjBill - 8-22-2010 at 07:39 PM

I can remember when they had meters in downtown Tijuana. Do not know what happened to them.

PJPadilla - 8-23-2010 at 07:18 AM

Not a wise move.

Not anymore. I read an article last week in La Frontera that said it used to be that 80% of the visitors were American and 20% were locals. Now it's the other way around. And of course the total number is WAY down. The business owners are changing to cater to residents. That's what the article said at least.

BTW, same story for Avenida Revolucion in TJ.

Personally, I think that's all for the best.

Here are some good points posted by Ken Bell on the Punta Banda Message Board. I believe he lives up in Rosarito:
-----------------

Re: Rosarito discovers another way to kill tourism

"Hmmm... then I suppose other cities like San Francisco, New York and San Diego are also "intent on killing tourism?" San Diego seems determined to balance their unbalanced budget with parking tickets.

I don't understand it, but I have eaten in restaurants here where I had to drive around the block to find a parking space, when the restaurant owner and cook have cars parked on the street all day. My guess is that minimum 30% of the parking spaces on the boulevard are taken by employee's cars; parked there all day. Then there are the taxis. They park anywhere they want, for a long as they want. I've seen the small busses park all day, in a parking space, on the boulevard! The city will never go against the taxi syndicates... they are too political.

If the parking meters will open up some spaces for customers, and the rates are honestly "minimum" then I'm all for them. At least the shopping centers in Rosarito have not started charging for parking... yet."

surfer jim - 8-23-2010 at 09:30 AM

I guess the question is how much are the tickets.

"Suggested MORDIDA for parking ticket is $2 for gringos and $20 peso for locals".

From the Rosarito Chamber of Commerce.

BajaBlanca - 8-24-2010 at 06:58 PM

a parking lot would be such a much better way to go .. I hate parking meters !! Did you know it is illegal to put a quarter or other coin (in the States) in a parking meter that is not yours and about to expire ??? I have broken this law many times when no one was looking :-)

Did I mention that I HATE PARKING METERS ....

Mexicorn - 8-24-2010 at 08:57 PM

What ever happened to that smoking in bars law they passed a few years back????????????
