Has anyone traveled the road from Tecate to Ensenada lately? I hear that there is major road construction going on. How are the detours and would
you take the road or avoid it? Thank youDavid K - 8-27-2010 at 08:19 AM
It is up to you... 14 miles of a construction zone, with dirt detours... or avoid it by using the Blvd. 2000 and/ or Hwy.1. If in a motorhome or
pulling a travel trailer I would avoid.DENNIS - 8-27-2010 at 08:34 AM
Yeah....don't mess with it. It's easy to avoid, like David said. Ask him for a map and a picture of his Toyota pickup. Mulegena - 8-27-2010 at 08:52 AM
That's a llooonnggggg 14 miles...
go through in the evening when the road crew has gone home.
It'll go faster, no stops, less traffic, less dust 'n dirt.
There's down-to-the-dirt construction south of Ensenada, too, so we've just got to be patient.
The finished roads will be very nice and a welcome improvement.David K - 8-27-2010 at 09:21 AM

Arrows on Map showing ways around the construction earlier this year on the south end of Hwy. 3 (now completed) to get to Tecate from Ensenada.
and for Dennis...
Have a great trip!DENNIS - 8-27-2010 at 09:43 AM

Hola, a friend arrived in los barriles in a f100 ford pickup this past sunday and told me to avoid the ensenada to tecate via hiway 3 at all costs on
my way home around the end of september as i'll be pulling a utility trailer.
so, it looks like i'll be going through the tj crossing as it'll be easier sitting in traffic rather than getting beat up and out of patience going
through tecate.
haven't tried the blvd. 2000 route yet. hmmmm...i'm giving it some thought though.
would the blvd. 2000 route be a wise choice for a very navigationally impaired nomad ?

SI!DENNIS - 8-27-2010 at 10:50 AM
Sure. You can still cross at Tecate.
Go up the toll road from Ensenada...exit toll road at Puerto Nuevo turn off....continue on the free road north, through the Military checkpoint to
Blvd. 2000.
Head up 2000 for around 35 miles and you'll see the first of two Tecate off-ramps. That's the free road and it's good.
If you want the toll road over to Tecate, take the second Tecate turn off from 2000. It's about 6 miles further up 2000 than the free road exit.
That's my method until the road construction is completed.
PS....I think I remember the distance from 2000 to Tecate....16 miles.

OK all you Baja experts I have a question for you about this route.
A group of 5 of us on motorcyles (Dual sport type, dirt no problem) are planning on crossing at Tecate on Sept 8th. Would you suggest we take one of
the alternate routes to Ensenada? I went north via MEX 3 in February with only small construction so it was no problem but that was 7 months ago.
A 10-20 minute delay for construction and dirt bypasses aren't a big deal for us.
Thx in advance for the comments,

I took HWY 3 from Tecate to Ensenada two weeks ago on a Wednesday morning. No problems. You shouldn't have any problems with your bikes. If it has
been raining, take an alternate route.BajaInMyFuture - 9-1-2010 at 01:20 PM
Thx oxxo for the quick reply. I liked the ride on MEX 3 in February so unless I hear some details that change my mind I'm going to suggest to our
"Group of Fools" we take that route.
Thx again,

You can do the road alright. The question is, do you want to ride in a cloud of dust with other traffic when it can easily be avoided.BajaInMyFuture - 9-1-2010 at 01:48 PM
Hmmmmmm, you make a good point there Dennis. . . . .
That said, is it really only 14 miles of the road that's currently under construction or what?????

That's what they say. I haven't been on it for a couple of months when the bad zone was shorter. It was a mess then.
Why bother with it?BajaInMyFuture - 9-2-2010 at 11:20 AM
I have what might be a dumb question; What is blvd. 2000?
If I cross at Tecate is it better to take MEX 2 or MEX 2D to get me to MEX 1 and then on south to Ensenada and beyond?David K - 9-2-2010 at 06:19 PM

Take Mex. 2 (free road, 4 lanes) to the Blvd. 2000 (which is a 4 lane FREEWAY) to Hwy. 1 at Popotla (south of Rosarito) . Stay on Hwy. 1 to Ensenada
or jump onto 1-D at Cantamar.
Blvd. 2000 (BC 201) is on the map above (unnamed)...
