"The insurance expired today at 12:48pm"

They could easily have bought more insurance here. Hope that's the case.

Per the posting on the website dated August 29th:
--

Missing and last seen Monday, Aug 23 at 8:32am crossing the border from Mexico to the US and a subsequent sighting in Escondido at 9:52am Monday Aug 23.

We have just heard and confimed that on Monday, August 23, Melissa bought 7 days of Mexican Insurance at 12:48pm which means after they went to the bank in Escondido they traveled back to San Ysidro and we have to now assume they crossed the border and are somewhere in Mexico. We are told by the insurance agent they mentioned going to the beaches in baja.

The insurance expired today at 12:48pm and they have not crossed back as far as we know and although it gives us some good indication of where they are it raises additional concerns because of the wide spread violence and kidnappings that are routine in Baja.

Mat Vasquez DOB - 4/4/1980 Ht. 5’10” Wt. 180 Black Hair, Brown Eyes
Melissa Dixon DOB – 12/27/1979 Ht. 5’10” Wt. 120 Light Brown, Blue Eyes

It is presumed that Mat and Melissa are driving in Melissa’s 1990 Red Miata Convertible, license plate # 4SQR528. The rear window is broken out.

If you know their whereabouts or have seen either of them please immediately call Detective Beverly Marquez at Escondido Police Dept. at 760-839-4752.

Please also call the following numbers if unable to call Det. Marquez.
760-828-6190 or 209-815-8237

Don't really want to sound like a crank, but geez. It doesn't take a triple digit IQ to ponder the notion that they came back NOB to get money. Given that, they are probably driving a 20 year old Miata with a rear window broken out. Sounds like fun to me. Apologies to those who are worrying.

jmendez - 8-31-2010 at 04:01 PM

The insurance expired 8/30/10 @ 12:48 p.m. lets hope they renewed if they are still there.

thank you

jmendez - 8-31-2010 at 04:07 PM

to BajaNomad....thank you for posting the flyer.

Possibly crossed the border on foot to get visas......drove back to Escondido getting there after the bank opened, then drove back south.

Since they can confirm the purchase of Mexican insurance, I wonder if the type of car insured is available?

Bajahowodd - 8-31-2010 at 04:22 PM

DC- I'm wrong more often than I'd like to admit. But, it appears to me that they had insurance when they first crossed over. ( Lotsa connotations for that) But, you well know that so many people consider going to Baja for hijinks. Bottom line is that I wish no ill toward anyone, with the possible exception of GWB.

MISSING PERSONS

jmendez - 8-31-2010 at 04:45 PM

there could be alot of different reasons why they went into Mexico. The whole point of this is to find them no matter what they decided to do and make sure they are in good health and alive. Thats really all we want to hear from them or anyone. This is out of the ordinary for both of them. They both had good jobs, melissa had been there for 5 years, and mat had been there for about 4 months now and just received his benefits. Mat and I (his sister) are very close, and for him to go this long and not call me or to talk to his niece and nephew who he adores is very unusual. It's not knowing anything that is so hard to deal with, your mind goes in all kinds of directions. Like I said, we just want to know if they are ok and safe. PLEASE, PLEASE pass it along and any help would be greatly appreciated.

jmendez - 8-31-2010 at 05:31 PM

Mat and Melissa like to have fun, they like all kinds of music, they both like to go to the bars and drink beer. I don't know if Melissa has been to Mexico, but my brother has and he knows all the bars and where to hang out. My brother has been to Rosarito before so he knows his way around and where to go.
just some info on them. let me know if you need anymore

Mexicorn - 8-31-2010 at 10:29 PM

Showed the flyer to a few beat cops on Benito Juarez in Rosarito this afternoon via my Iphone and they have said they will pass the information at the next Officer's line up.
I also kept an eye out for an Miatta driving on or near by the beach area looking for the vehicle with no luck. Please call (619) 531-2000 and ask to speak to the SDPD Law Enforcement Officer in charge of Mexico liason.
Also ask the if the plate counter was working at the Port's of entry. This will let you know if they crossed back into Mexico.
Meanwhile I will continue to keep an eye peeled!
Have faith they look like a couple of smart kids.

Big question please take no offense; Did they use street narcotics?

BajaNomad - 8-31-2010 at 11:33 PM

please check your U2U which is a private message system here...it's up in the right hand corner of the screen under the logged in as....part.

good luck finding these two...there are thousands of eyes on this board.

DENNIS - 9-1-2010 at 09:55 AM

If they were in jail, the first visit they'll get is from the American Consulate and they'll make phone calls for them. So...I guess you can rule that out.

wessongroup - 9-1-2010 at 10:12 AM

Pretty amazing what can happen from all the folks on this board.. outstanding !!

Maybe...maybe not

Someone would need to inform the consulate. Doesn't always happen.

jmendez - 9-1-2010 at 02:59 PM

There has been a possible sighting at the San Nicolas hotel and casino in ensenada several days ago at the bamboo tropical pool bar, they were not registered as hotel guests

This effort to recruit the kindness and assistance of our group here has just been reduced to a bullchit scam, in my opinion.

lizard lips - 9-1-2010 at 05:29 PM

Lets not jump to conclusions just yet. People do strange things under stress and asking for donations is no indicator of a scam.

Dennis could be perfectly right but I also read that one of the missing's father's chartered a plane and went searching for the girls car. I don't know where but if I was him I would have taken that charter money and physically went looking myself. You can see a lot more from the ground.

There again, everyone is different so let's look at this as "real" until we hear otherwise.

Just my 2 cents.

I am Melissa's father, Tim Dixon, and my daughter, my only child, is missing and I am worried sick about her and we are also very worried for Mat as well. If you can help us because you have contacts down there, we are forever in your debt, but we are not out to scam anyone for anything, nor am I asking anyone for any monetary help.

Thank you,

Tim Dixon

willyAirstream - 9-1-2010 at 06:10 PM

Tim - I will be traveling down next week to the East Cape and will keep and eye out and post the flyers.

timgdixon - 9-1-2010 at 06:14 PM

Thank you FishAbductor. It has been a very trying week, we have hardly slept since last wednesday when we discovered them missing and have searched tirelessly from here (Oceanside) to the border. We did not know they went south until this past monday and have directed all our efforts that way since then, and we are very appreciative to have your eyes looking out for them.

Just out of curiosity.... was the Mexican auto insurance purchased before they withdrew funds from the bank in Escondido, or after they withdrew the funds?

Had they already bought the insurance with a prior intention of heading back south, or did they in fact head back south and then buy insurance to cross the border with?

Just something I was considering in reading this.

Had they crossed back to the States, there would be a record...No?

timgdixon - 9-1-2010 at 06:19 PM

Here is what we know. Sunday aug 22, they were seen together by a mutual friend watching the football game. At 8:32am monday morning (aug 23) they crossed on foot out of Mexico at San Ysidro. At 9:52am Melissa withdrew $700 from her bank in Escondido and at 12:48pm they bought the 7 days of insurance.

So the last anyone actually saw them was monday, Aug 23 at 12:48pm at the insurance agency in San Ysidro.

Tim

timgdixon - 9-1-2010 at 06:21 PM

If they cross back, US Customs is on the lookout for them, and so far they have not.

Just to let you all know that this is not a scam. These two young people are actually missing so if you are inclined to help download and print the flyer and get it out there. Put it up at your local Pemex station and anywhere else you can think of.

I just got off the phone with Joanna and she is for real. Now we have three missing and their relatives really need your help. I know what I would do if one of mine was missing in Baja- I would ask for your help also.

My wiskers are grey but I also have a big heart and you guys have one to.

No you don't Dennis. You have excellent radar and submit what you think and that's a GOOD thing my friend!

I know. I should have done the same. Since I'm so freakin' old, I wonder if I just forgot? If I could remember what it was I'm talkin' about, I'd......uhh......ummmm.....never mind. I think I forgot what I was talking about. :)

timgdixon - 9-1-2010 at 08:33 PM

Hey Everybody,

I appreciate skepticism and it is completely understandable. Melissa and Mat are real people, and yes they are adults, but their families are extremely worried about them because of how they disappeared and because we have had no contact with them. Imagine for just a minute if it was your daughter or son. This now the 10th day they have been gone.

The phone number on the flyer ending in 6190 is my cell and anyone of you are welcome to call me. http://helpusfindmatandmelissa.com/pdf/Missing_Persons_Alert...

redmesa - 9-2-2010 at 10:44 AM

Did they have cellphones? It is seems more troubling now than in the old days when people would just be gone and never heard of again like my cousin and a friend's father...we are so in touch or so we think. I lost contact with my daughter in Nicaragua for a couple of weeks so I know the fear and anxiety of this situation.

jmendez - 9-2-2010 at 10:45 AM

Bajaguy, THANK YOU so so much. You guys dont even know how much this means to me.:( THANK YOU to everyone who is helping!!
*my brother Mat is my best friend, we are very close, we talk to each other all the time, he's been my best friend since he was born. we did everything together. he adores his neices and nephews, he would do anything for them.
thanks again,
Jmendez(mat's sister)

jmendez - 9-2-2010 at 10:56 AM

*to redmesa* my brother mat does have a cell phone. it is off at this time. im not sure if he has no service over there, or if the battery is dead...but he does have a pay as you go phone and we have put minutes on it just in case.

briantroy - 9-2-2010 at 11:38 AM

Something tells me they had a good time in Baja and have either extended the stay or ended up at the Burning Man Festival. Either way, cell phone use/reception is sketchy at best. I wonder if these two put in for time off from work or just abandonded their jobs?

timgdixon - 9-2-2010 at 11:47 AM

They have not called their employer (both worked at the same place) or any co-workers, friends, family, etc, and today makes the 11th day.

Tim Dixon

Terry28 - 9-2-2010 at 12:23 PM

Have you.......?

mcfez - 9-2-2010 at 12:52 PM

From the web:

If you cannot reach the missing individual, and believe he or she may have run afoul of criminals or of the law, you may contact the Consulate, the U.S. Embassy, or the Department of State for assistance.

http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/faqs.html#missing

ALSO.....
ATM withdraw was made? Have you requested a copy of the security footage there? You may be able to determine the state of mind they were in by judging the facial expressions.....

Marita-LosOlivos - 9-2-2010 at 01:57 PM

A very similar couple was seen at the San Nicolas Hotel Casino in Ensenada having a drink at the Bambu Tropical Pool Bar several days ago. The names were not registered as hotel guests. They probably went south of Ensenda to San Quintin, 3 hrs away.

That was in the e-mail I received at the hotel I work at in San Quintin. What makes you think that they are in San Quintin??? I have American tv and have seen this story on the San Diego local news stations. Are you sure they crossed back into Baja?? I can deffinately say that here at the hotel that I work at in San Quintin, they have not stayed here. There are many hotels in San Quintin, and if they are in San Quintin as the e-mail states, they could of stayed at any other hotel in SQ if they are in Baja.

I will keep my eyes open and let you know if I see them.

I hope that when they are found either here in Baja or in the States, that they are found safe.

If they are in Baja and decide to go further south past Guerro Negro, they will need to get Toursits Visas. That means if they do ask for a tourist visa, and they don't have one or do not get one, they will be stuck between Guerro Negro and Tijuana, unless they cross back into the States, and then they will need a passport to cross back into the States.

[Edited on 9-3-2010 by Marita-LosOlivos]

continuing our search

jmendez - 9-2-2010 at 07:37 PM

So by tomorrow at noon, we will be leaving to head back down south to continue the search for my brother Mat and his friend Melissa. To much time as passed and it may look like we might have to cross the border. Any suggestions about that? any info will help. I can't and won't stop searching for my brother Mat and his friend Melissa. We will be passing out flyers everywhere towards the San Ysidro border.

*will be posting a picture of a car similar to Melissa's soon*

Thank you,
jmendez(mat's sister)

DENNIS - 9-2-2010 at 08:35 PM

If I were Mat and Melissa, I would much rather be in Rosarito Beach than hanging around the border area. I think your efforts would be better spent down there.
This weekend might be a bit hectic there, but it's party central for young folks and I'm sure they're aware of this.

Yes thats what it looks like except note that the back window is completely gone.

Tim

Rosemaria - 9-3-2010 at 07:15 AM

Speaking of the car, it's possible it has been towed. Someone should first check to see if the car did indeed cross back to Mexico (they capture the license plates I believe), and if it did, start checking impound lots, esp in the Ensenada area where they may have been sighted. It just seems to me this car would stick out like a sore thumb, maybe they abandoned it somewhere, also.

timgdixon - 9-3-2010 at 07:15 AM

No, even though that car looks like they are tinted.

Exactly, I truly believe the car is the key to finding them, one way or another.

DENNIS - 9-3-2010 at 07:43 AM

I wouldn't spend much time at impound yards. If it's federal, you won't get in anyway and no one will be able to answer your questions.

Stick with places you think might attract them....like "Papas 'n Beer" in Rosarito.

unfortunately you are right. The family needs to put the pressure on from the US side, but with no evidence of a crime, thats unlikely.

timgdixon - 9-3-2010 at 09:58 AM

Yes its been difficult because they are both adults and no evidence of foul play. We have contacted the Consulate and they have the flyer and an open case.

The family should be coordinating that along with other measures when they or their representative can be "on the ground" here in Baja.

The key to this whole event is the car.

If they are just holidaying, the car will be the easiest way to spot them as it is so unique.

Dennis.....

That type/color car is somewhat unusual in the Ensenada area........I might have seen one or two in 6 years. SOMEBODY, the police, the military (at checkpoints), someone at a PEMEX or at an impound yard (the ones the local, state or federal highway police use) will have seen it.

The flyers that Lizard Lips and I posted on our case had a color photo of the missing man's truck......someone remembered seeing it and that's how we found him.

Rosemaria - 9-3-2010 at 10:26 AM

Tim, if I were you I would go talk the folks at that hotel in person...

working your way south from there makes sense.

It would help to know what they are interested in? Surfing, camping, boating, rock-climbing, racing, history/archaeology? I see they liked to party but what young person doesn't?

I have the MS Word doc we made the PDF from if someone can edit it into spanish, although I'm not sure how to upload it here I could place it on their website for download, in fact I will do that as soon as I hit submit.

Tim

P.S. I have placed the link on the site for word doc but thought I would post the link here as well.

I must say I am impressed with how well people have come together on this board. I stayed away for awhile because there was someone named JR something that made things miserable. But, the way people are so willing to help here really gives me inspiration. I have been following this situation (as well as Cythia Jeffries') very closely and keeping my fingers crossed.

I just wonder if these two bought a weeks worth of insurance because it was the same price or cheaper than 2 or 3 days and figured they might as well do it in case they needed it. But, after a couple days in Baja, they decided to head to Burning Man instead. After checking the BM website, it seems impossible to reach anyone out there.

The other interesting point is that they returned to Escondido when banks are not only available in Mexico, but her particular branch is available so much closer to the border. This makes me think they were returning for something other than money. Camping equipment? Clothing?

I have been checking multiple sites regularly for any updated information. I really hope things turn out well as I travel that way with my girl all the time. I am a San Marcos native so this really hits home; they are near my age and my compadres for sure. My eyes are peeled in the North County and I have let everyone in the hospital I work at know about the situation. My best hopes are that Mat and Melissa are going to feel terrible about not checking in!

I put up a poster at the PEMEX, the big grocery store on the highway and the military checkpoint. Also at Restaurant Kadakaaman, by the mission. The man at the PEMEX said an old red convertible went by yesterday (Friday) southbound, but he thought it was a VW. Thanks, BajaBlanca for the heads up.

Everyone that has done anything on this by putting up flyers or contacting Mexican Governmental Agencies like Juanita has please post so we know what has been done and where. I am returning on Tuesday and will hit many government office's in TJ, Rosirito, and Ensenada. Those of you in San Felipe please put up a flyer at the Ministerio Publico and the Semefo and DIF. That woud be great! We also need flyers at hospitals.

Lets keep going on this friends.

ok, so let me say THANK YOU for everything you guys have been doing. just wanted to give you guys an updated timeline from the begining until now.

*mat and melissa were seen crossing back into the U.S. from Mexico at the San Ysidro border on Monday, August 23, 2010 at 8:30am
*melissa was seen at her bank in Escondido at 9:52am on Monday, August 23, 2010
*mat also went to either a bank or ATM that same monday morning.
*they were then seen at 12:48pm Monday, August 23, 2010 buy a 7 day pass of mexico insurance for melissa's car.

so that tells us that they went back into Mexico. and that is the last thing we have heard anything.

I want to THANK all of you on here that have been our eyes and ears over there. it means so much to me and our family.
i will let you know if we find out anything else.

Hello everyone! i am looking for all the Baja norte jails in each city. would anyone happen to know any of the names or how i would contact them? i am also gonna be looking for hospitals, clinics, red cross and the morgue's. i know you cant search in all the cities for me, but if you live in different cities and you know of the one's in your city that would be a big help. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN WITH ALL MY HEART!

*and i will be posting a new flyer tomorrow of english and spanish with all the correct spelling and information*

just a thought here....do you or are you accompanied by a spanish speaking person...preferably mexicano? You will get much more accomplished and get better cooperation if you have a national doing the enquiring.

If not...perhaps seek assistance from someone here...good luck. Jail is a possibility...maybe they had a car accident and got put in there...they dont necessarily give you a phone call.

me and my brother...my best friend.

Rosemaria - 9-5-2010 at 10:57 AM

J, my heart goes out to you, your brother looks like a teddy bear - big yet kind and his smile shows his good humor.

why do you suppose they walked over the border to get cash? this makes no sense to me whatsoever. #1, why not bring the car? Its a long, hot walk over those border crossings. #2, there are many ATMs in Tijuana. While you can spend US dollars in Tijuana/Ensenada, many tourists prefer to withdraw from Mexican ATMS to get the fair intl exchange rate. #3 insurance can be purchased cheaply and easily on the MX side of border as well.

Do you think its possible they had the car taken from them by authorities in Baja for not having Mexican insurance? Alot of americans have no clue when they come down here that they will need a seperate auto policy. There are also many crooked cops near border in Tijuana who love to mess with tourists and may have threatened them with jail unless they handed over a "fine". I have heard of fines from anywhere btw 40-500 bucks being paid directly to crooked cops.

DENNIS - 9-5-2010 at 11:08 AM

Insurance isn't "required" in Mexico. It's just worse than foolish not to have at least liability.
The story goes, they crossed on foot into Mexico for unknown reasons, then walked back to the states, driving up to their bank in Escondido.
From that point on, nobody is sure where they want although they purchased a Mexican insurance policy.

There are ATMs everywhere. If the area is big enough for a chain super market, they have them.

It would be interesting to know, if possible, how much cash they carried with them. That would give an idea how long they could survive without hitting another ATM.
That would be a god-send of information if they withdrew money in Mexico.

Rosemaria - 9-5-2010 at 11:10 AM

I don't drive, so I wouldn't know. I have heard stories about the bribes/insurance though.
