Ken,

Thanks for posting these. I have fond memories of all three.

When did you take the photo at PC?

Our first stay at the PC Hotel in the 80's on Thanksgiving, we stood out on that patio and watched one of those memorable Baja sunsets.

Ken

Ken Bondy - 9-1-2010 at 09:24 AM

Thanks Ken. The photo at PC was taken in 2002. We stayed only one night, did not really enjoy it. It was extraordinarily expensive and the staff was kinda snooty. I wish I could have seen it in the old days. Plus they have square toilets. Never could get used to that:

wessongroup - 9-1-2010 at 09:24 AM

Sorry, but don't know where they are located.. little help

Ken Bondy - 9-1-2010 at 09:26 AM

wessongroup the first is (was) the La Pinta in San Quintin; the second is the Hotel Punta Chivato (it was renamed the La Posada de Las Flores); the third is the Los Arcos in La Paz.

Need to be flush to have one, I guess.

Beautiful pictures, Ken, commode notwithstanding.

wessongroup - 9-1-2010 at 10:18 AM

not sure of the overall befits of a square john.. guess there are those that find it ....... worth it... also, does one need a special plunger to unclog?:):)

Skipjack Joe - 9-1-2010 at 11:47 AM

Probably doesn't flush as well.

A round one creates a better vortex.

The sign should read - "Gordos Welcome"

The La Pinta in San Quintin became the Desert Inn. Then the Los Pinos guys bought it and refurbished it. It is now named Hotel Santa Maria ( after the name of the beach on which it stands).

Keri - 9-1-2010 at 01:47 PM

Correction, the hotel's name is Hotel Mision Santa Maria . k

Folks who have not had extensive travels may not realize that an amazing large part of the world uses these so-called squat toilets. That photo presents an example of the best that can be found. All too many are little more than holes in the ground. However, even today, within the cultures that consider these the norm, they continue to build facilities that contain such devices. I encountered one of the modern kind in Odessa, Ukraine two years ago. An annex was built to a museum for modern facilities. What grabbed me was that this modern facility had electrically operated faucets. I asked a friend of mine from Lebanon about these toilets, primarily because I know many Westerners seem to enjoy sitting and reading. Known as the library. I was told that despite the lack of support, culturally, these folks can squat while reading a book or the newspaper for as long as it takes.

KASHEY...that's the best looking one of those I have seen!
It's incredible the work they put into the design shown. The ones I have encountered were basically a 1 meter round and beveled concrete pad with a about a 6" hole in the center. My wife about went through the roof (in this case, the window) the first time she saw one. After a few of them, she finally got the hang of them. What frosted her was that the ladies and men's had the hole, but the men's room also included a urinal.

All the fixtures at the Posada de Las Flores are being renovated so the water doesn't stain them.
Sorry I couldn't help myself. I'm bad!

On my first trip to Japan I was on the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto (I think) and I noticed that the cars had both "Western" bathrooms and the conventional Japanese bathrooms with the squat toilets. It was your choice. In the "Western" bathroom, with the conventional "Western" toilet, there was a sign with a stick figure warning users not to "mount" the toilet (I have a picture SOMEWHERE). Apparently many Japanese, not familiar with Western fixtures, tried to mount the toilet with their feet on the lid. In that precarious position, numerous broken legs resulted when the mounter's feet slipped and the legs shot down into the toilet. Terrible way to break your leg.

They are a much healthier way to take care of one's business...so to speak.

My gastroenterologist swears by 'em. Has one installed in his home.

Skipjack Joe - 9-1-2010 at 06:32 PM

I think those toilets are popular because people prefer them to a 'western' toilet. Squatting forces the upper legs up against the abdomen, pressuring it to naturally start the whole process. Pooping from a squatting position is really more satisfying (although 'mistakes' are more common).

Sure never thought this thread would head (get it???) in this direction :)

1990 I was in a high-end department store in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It looked just like Nordstoms inside with designer clothes, cosmetics. I'm in a dress, heels, pantyhose. I go into the ladies lounge and in the stall is a tiled pit along with a faucet, bucket w/ladle.:?::?:

I went to the KFC across the street.

Is this what you mean?

Some things you don't want a closer look at...

El Camote - 9-1-2010 at 08:33 PM

The wife and I were in Amsterdam BM (before marriage), confined to our budget hotel room with a bad case of the Van Goghs and goes again. Imagine our surprise to find the "shelf style" toilet in the W.C. down the hall. :P

KASHEYDOG - 9-1-2010 at 08:47 PM

Thanks KASHEYDOG, but it's my own fault for posting a picture of a square toilet. What was I thinking?? :)

KASHEYDOG - 9-1-2010 at 09:21 PM

Thanks, Ken. At least I feel better now.
Got any more pictures? Of hotels that is or let's start another thread on "crappers of the world". After all it was kind of fun....
I mean here I am 64 years old, traveled all over the world and I never saw a square crapper, till today. Geeze, thanks Ken. You're my hero of the day .....
