NO PEOPLE EQUALS NO BUSINESS

msawin - 9-1-2010 at 08:42 PM

Great photos... thanks. Even a photo of Miki at the Oaisis.

But there are no personas in any photos???

When did you take these shots...????

dtbushpilot - 9-1-2010 at 08:54 PM

Great photos, thanks.

I just had dinner at Domingos, arrived about 6:45, had a wonderful carne asada especial and left about 7:45. I was the only person there until just before I left when 2 other gringos showed up. The outside patio is closed and only the inside dining room and bar are open. There were a couple of people at the bar. I know things don't get started early in MX, hopefully the crowd arrived after I left......dt

Thanks msawin. These were taken in 2004. I intentionally try to avoid people in photos like these, just a personal preference. Many of these were taken in the early morning. To the best of my recollection there were plenty of people in town, I just tried to keep them out of my photos.

Great Ken... Elizabeth really enjoyed Loreto on her first visit there (last summer)... the arched hedge/ trees by the mission are great!

KASHEYDOG - 9-1-2010 at 09:48 PM

Great pictures. After about 24 years of wintering in Loreto, it was like I was wandering along with you. Thanks.

We were in Loreto this past March. Had dinner about 6pm and only one other couple at Domingos. Sorry to report our meal wasn't as good as your report or as I remember El Nido was.

Very few tourists in town then. We really enjoyed our 2 days there though, spending one of the days driving to San Javier.

Nice pics of our town Ken.
Here another one from our "new" Malecon, an asset to the pueblo.

We've eaten at Domingo's many times. The service was excellent, and the food was very good. If I ever had a complaint, it was that their salad dressings appeared to be watered down. The good news and the bad news about dining at Domingo's in August is that although the beautiful back patio is closed, and you can enjoy A/C inside, is that when you leave, your clothes will reek of mesquite.

And, Ken- the El Nido "chain" was a family business. The ownership and operation of Domingo's has not changed. Same people still operate the place. If you were unhappy with your meal, so be it. Just wanted to chime in that the folks running it have not changed. I'm just kinda wondering if any decline in the quality might be ascribed to the general lack of tourism. Kinda hard to make a living if you have to throw stuff out. It's the conundrum of Loreto. No one wants it to become a major tourist destination, yet, locals need to make a decent living.

On another thread, I posited the idea that Villas Group, which is developing a huge complex at Ensenada Blanca, would mean more traffic to Loreto. Two cautions: Inasmuch as their project is as far away from downtown, and is being designed as a self contained complex. with multiple on-site restaurants, it may not offer very much relief. Also, for those who are living in Loreto, since I have not been there since last year, what can you tell me about the Villa Group hotel right across the street from Domingo's? Do they have their own restaurant? Just figured that the family that operates Hacienda Suites, just on the other side of Domingo's, must be feeling the competition. So, does laundering cartel drug money by building resorts constitute the next business model?

fishabductor the hotel with the pool (in my photos) is Villas de Loreto. It is (was) just south of town on the site of the old Flying Sportsman Lodge. The photo was taken in 2004 and I don't think Villas de Loreto is in business any more.

El Nido in San Felipe is still top notch for a reasonable price. I wish they had large baked potatoes though.

Anyone here know how in the h**l does the doorman there ALWAYS on the dime, opens the door for guest? We even tried to be sneaky on him......no luck!

tripledigitken - 9-2-2010 at 08:27 PM

Howard,

Know the history of El Nido as well, have been eating at their restaurants for over 30 years. Had a decent meal at Domingo's last time too. Not so the night in question.

Any restaurant can have a bad night. Posted reviews since mine confirm they are back on track.

There is a nice hotel just North of them and the Santa Fe to the South. I have stayed at both and they are both good in their own way. The last time I stayed at the Santa Fe they gave me a coupon for a free margarita at Domingo's when I told them I was headed there for dinner. I can't stay at Santa Fe any more because they no longer accept pets and I can never seem to go anywhere without these miserable unappreciative cats and dog. This time we stayed at the Hotel Angra, nice place, great folks, good price, good security, can't recommend it enough....we'll be back.

As for Domingos, I've eaten there for 15 years (pre Domingos) and have never had a questionable meal. I plan my stop on my way down so that I can eat there. Every restaurant has a bad meal now and then, sorry you had one Ken, maybe next time it will be my turn.....dt

Gotcha, Ken. Exactly right about an off night. What can be troubling is if and when you rave about some place, and take friends there for the first time......

The question about a hotel with a pool near Domingo's would seem to me to be Hacienda Suites. Two doors down from Domingo's.

Ken, Thanks for sharing your Loreto pictures.:D
