Municipal Canine Care Center - La Paz

Municipal Canine Care Center
Hwy 1 from La Paz towards Todos Santos @ km 194 just before San Pedro

I took a stray dog there yesterday & got the following information:

They DO NOT accept monetary donations....PERIOD.

They DO accept donations of dog food.

If you take a dog or cat in, please take food for that animal. No food taken in, they feed the animal for 7 days & if the animal is not adopted by day 7 & no food is brought in for that specific animal, it is put to sleep. They will keep an animal for adoption beyond 7 days only if food is provided.

It is a nice new bare-bones facility on the left side of the highway on the outskirts of San Pedro, there is a large white sign on a chain link fence that says something like El Centro Municipal de Atención Canina (CMAC). It’s a complex of several small governmental agencies right along the highway, take a right just inside the gate & follow the dirt road about 1/8th mile, the road will curve to the left, just follow it around until it curves to the left again into a paved driveway & that’s it!

They do not have a website yet & no phone yet, but there’s some information (Espanol) about them on the internet:

http://noticabos.org/2010/05/11/siguen-sacrificando-perros-e...

BUT....the km is wrong...the website says km 19....it’s really km 194.

If an animal is adopted, they spay or neuter it at no charge; they give it all the necessary vaccinations before they release it to an adoptive family. There is NO CHARGE to adopt an animal either. Anyone can take a pet in there for free vaccinations, spay or neutering from 8AM – 3 PM Monday - Friday.

Not knowing any of these details when I took the stray in, I headed back towards town & stopped at a feed & seed store & bought two 50 pound bags of adult dog food & one bag of puppy food for the 8 new puppies that someone brought in with no food....that will give the dog I took in a month more of life hoping for adoption, the puppies at least a month & several other dogs on death row a little longer to hopefully be adopted. Needless to say, I did not go in the back to look at all the little faces!!

If you’re a dog lover & want to help, please take dog food out....whether you can adopt a pet or not.

Edit....ARRRRRGH!!! The Google Earth attachment failed to post! :( You can see it at: http://www.talkbaja.com/showthread.php?t=4132

Edit #2: It's been brought to my attention that I erred in using the name "Humane Society" in my original post. I come from an area where "humane society", "animal shelter", and "dog pound" are used generically and interchangeably. The actual name of the facility at San Pedro is "El Centro Municipal de Atención Canina" (Municipal Canine Care Center). I apologize for any confusion.

The other information I provided is as given to a Mexican friend and I during our visit there.

As long as you did not mistake the little yellow house up the road for an adoption facility, everything is fine! LOL They got room for a collie!!! :fire:

Thank you for the information. We have worked with strays in La Paz back with Jacqueline and the Posada de Englebert. This sounds great. When we get down this fall we will be certain to take food out to the shelter. Do post the information in the Club Cruceros clubhouse for the returning cruisers as most are very dog friendly. Many start arriving in October, we drive down the end of November. I'll follow up when we get to La Paz. Again, thanks.

Jack, are you talking an online post....or a paper notice on a bulletin board in or by the "library"? If there's an online site, I don't have their address, but I'll bet Comitan does! Either of you feel free to either cut 'n paste my post over there....or post the URL pointing here.

I'll print a copy & slap it up on the bulletin board at the "library" soon.

No fear bajabass....I'm not THAT blind & senile....yet! I told THAT place no!:smug:

Longlegs: I did mean the library bulletin board. Tomas Daly is the webmaster for the Club Cruceros website, but I don't have his e address. As folks come back for the winter, many will help out. Surprising how many cruisers have dogs. Thanks for posting.

Thank you so very much for this valuable information. Is it okay with you if we post it on the Baja Western Onion.

No website?

Having five dogs here at the farm....ah....we're dog lovers! Yes....are are allowed in the house during hot days.

Now.....if these good folks need a website built....have them email me <deno@kissmygrass.com> or <yankeeirishman@yahoo.com> and I'd be very happy to create a cool site for em.....I'll even pay for the domain name and first year hosting.

Jack Swords....'K....I'll get a paper copy up on the bulletin board within less than a week....on my next trip into town.

BajaOnion....GO FOR IT! You have my permission to plagiarize!;)

mcfez....Let me talk with a Mexican friend who could convey the full extent of your offer to the person in charge at the Humane Society & find out who the higher-ups would be who'd have to accept your offer & take over the maintenance of it. That's a very generous offer! I'll get back to you.

Edit: mcfez, do you speak Espanol??

I think the first flyers to go up should be to alert Mr Bing that it's safe to come home now.

But I wouldn't bother with posting flyers at the library for him- he doesn't strike me as a library type gato. Just stick the notices straight on to a few cardon which he's probably out there climbing.

Hola!

Not enough to get by with...and hold it all (!)......Before I hear about about "why dont you try to learn it since I spend so much time down here".....I am 80% deaf...real hard to hear the correct pronunciation of the words .

That website .....easy to email me in Espanol since I do have avenues to translate, and I can have the webite done in Espanol also!

No! no!! I asked the question with the thought in mind of ease in communicating with a potential contact to set up a web page with in Espanol....I'd be the last person to harangue someone for not yet speaking the language....or even various degrees of fluency! Second languages don't come as easily for everyone....especially difficult over, oh, say 5-6 years of age! Check your U2U, please.
