Thoughts about BAJA NOMADS response to the 2 "missing persons" topics ......

surfer jim - 9-3-2010 at 05:48 PM

*NOTE* If you have any info please post to the 2 open threads and not here.

Like many, I have been following the two threads on "missing persons" since they started. As details have started to fill in (photos, descriptions, vehicles, ect.) it really caught my interest.

Next, many NOMADS started to get personally involved (flyers, suggestions, phone calls, ect) . Even the "I'm looking in the bars" , while sounding funny , may if fact be the best places to look (who knows?)

I now find myself looking for current posts several times a day. Heck....I even look at traffic in Orange County to see the vehicles.

I'm impressed with what has happend here....what about you?

woody with a view - 9-3-2010 at 05:51 PM

no opinion. cool that everyone is concerned. some people don't want to be found...

disclaimer: i haven't read either thread so i should just shut up but, you know me!

oldlady - 9-3-2010 at 06:28 PM

I agree too and have been following closely. Wanted to post compliments to those who have been so contructive in their ideas and help; didn't want to clutter the threads.

We're keeping an eye out too should they have come down this far.

That hurts, Woody. It doesn't work here.

Great team effort

lookingandbuying - 9-3-2010 at 06:52 PM

I am sure that both of these families trying to find their loved one's feel blessed that they found Baja Nomads and all the wonderful people involved here.

It is really great to see how people come forward to help someone they don't even know. That's what keeps me going in life...seeing the wonderful things people do!!!

woody with a view - 9-3-2010 at 06:52 PM

okay.

BillP - 9-3-2010 at 06:55 PM

Jim, I too am impressed, top notch buncha folks!

Long shot, but??

lookingandbuying - 9-3-2010 at 07:18 PM

Most ATM machines have cameras that operate when the withdrawls are being made. Maybe it's a real long shot but wondering if someone can get any of the banks that he made withdrawls from to cooperate?? If it is determined that it is actually him that made the withdrawls it would sure help.

redmesa - 9-3-2010 at 07:37 PM

I am sure this has been mentioned ... but there a many military check-points along the Baja highway and wouldn't those guys have noticed this car and couple? Sorry, if this has been discussed.

Thanks, FA........... After a moment of review, I see you're right.

Sorry, Jim. I'm a little jumpy before a mission. Always was.
The offer to join me is still open. I'll buy the beer.

toneart - 9-3-2010 at 07:40 PM

Dennis,

I think you are being too harsh with Woody and Surfer Jim. Woody raised a possibility that maybe they don't want to be found. I asked the same thing of Cynthia's dad. It is not a judgment. It is merely a question. If it pops into ones mind, why not ask it here? We don't know any of these missing people. While it may be hurtful to the anguishing relatives, it is actually a more optimistic possibility than a bad ending or never turning up.

With me, I tend to not believe that possibility. But what do I know?

Regarding Surfer Jim: Searching in bars seems less likely to encounter Cynthia's father than spotting a vehicle. That is only his opinion. He says that seems "funny" to him, but at the same time he was actually validating it as a good idea. I think it is a great idea since Cynthia says he likes beer. You could likely find me in one, on occasion, if I visited or settled there.

Bottom line: These people are missing. We have to consider all possibilities that our imaginations can muster. Sometimes the family is too close to the person and filled with grief and anxiety to be objective. I am NOT saying that is the case here. That is just one remote possibility.

The BajaNomads have certainly rallied to help and are taking this very seriously. You too, Dennis! Good for you.

We all live or travel in Baja. We all think, "There, but for the Grace of God, go I. Too many are going missing recently for me to feel comfortable. Some of them had better start reappearing!

This is tugging at my heart even more so than the missing dog thread, and that one really disturbed me. My heart goes out to the relatives and I sincerely hope their loved ones turn up soon.

Me too, Tony. This is painful for a lot of people for a lot of reasons.
All we, as friends, can do is our best.

surfer jim - 9-3-2010 at 08:23 PM

My "bars" comment wasn't about anybody ....in fact it was the opposite...."may be the best places to look". Maybe my writing skills are lacking.;D

Too bad law enforcement is of little (or no) help.....I thought they would have put in "some" effort.

We can't know if people want to be found or not......but the effort of those "looking" , after being asked for help, has been first class.

timgdixon - 9-3-2010 at 08:46 PM

Dear All you Wonderful Nomads,

I am personally moved by the outpouring of people who don't know me, my daughter, Mat, or his family (and Cynthia too) and I cannot express in enough words how thankful I am you are all where you are.

This has been the most difficult week or so of my life and I want to remain as hopeful as one can, but I want you all to know I have also considered the terrible which is not pleasant. I am no longer concerned with the "why" they have disappeared but rather now the "where" have they disappeared to.

Maybe they don't want to be found, maybe they are just having the times of their lives, I was 30 once, but the not knowing if they are safe, or hurt somewhere is at times untolerable. I worry all night long if Missy is cold, hungry, thirsty, hurt and wondering if Dad is going to ever find her. It's the worst way to wake in the middle of the night.

I am forever in your debt because of the kindness, compassion, and gentleness you have all afforded us in a time we need it the most. My faith in humanity was always there, but everyone of you has reinforced that to me and my family and I am sure Mat's and Cynthia's.

God bless each and everyone of you,

Tim Dixon

Gawwwdamighty...Rosarito is a zoo. I lost count of stop signs at two million and there must be twice as many cabs.
Got into a few Don Pistos and not one of them was very nice. They took flyers, but didn't want them in their window. I know the flyers were in the round file before I had my keys in the ignition.
I was a bit early to hit too many bars although I got a few, mostly out of Centro toward the south to La Salina, Bernie's old haunt. Man...what a gin mill. I hadn't been in there in years. It was barely open at the legal time and the bar was full. It brought back a bunch of memories....all good. I'll wait till Tuesday for the next trip which is 150 miles up and back from my place.
Halfway House couldn't have been nicer.
Anyway, this is going to take a few days, but it's all good.

Traffic was heavy going south. Mostly weekenders from the states. That's a good sign.

wessongroup - 9-4-2010 at 01:08 PM

Wish you had taken pictures... would have been nice to see where you were.. I know, I know... your a busy guy on a mission.. it was only a thought... relax..

It's tough driving up there, Wiley. I lived in Rosarito, but that was ten years ago so it's like all new to me. The tough part is trying to find a business while having to pay strict attention to the traffic, the all but hidden stop signs, and pot-holes. Oh, yeah....keeping an eye out for police cars too.
Oh, well...I'll get the hang of it.

Anybody know where the police station is? I was a guest there for a few days and was anticipating a big rush of nostalgia, but it seems to have moved.

woody with a view - 9-4-2010 at 01:22 PM

it was about 5 street north of the south end of town-25 years ago. the south end of town has expanded so the station is probably in the middle of town by now!

good on ya, Big D!!!

That's about what I remember as well. I couldn't have just missed it. I would for sure have seen some police cars, but didn't. They must have relocated.
I'll find it.
Thanks, Woody.

irenemm - 9-4-2010 at 01:32 PM

Dennis how can I print up a few of the flyers? I can put some up down here in this area. Maybe someone has seen something
thanks

DENNIS - 9-4-2010 at 01:55 PM

Hi Irene....My copy is stuck in Ms. Word and I can't get it out...yet. I'm working on it.
I also learned today that I also need one in Espaņol, which I'm doing right now.
I'll let you know if I have any luck.

irenemm - 9-4-2010 at 03:11 PM

thank you Dennis.
I will try to help and post the poster around our town.
Youn ever know.
I wish all the families much luck and will keep them in my prayers as they look for there loved ones

GOOD NEWS sr. jefferies has contacted his brother and wants a new atm card so at least he is ok this just posted on the other thread.

Bajahowodd - 9-4-2010 at 03:46 PM

At the very least, let's have a round of applause for Dennis. Some folks around here may have from time to time felt either intimidated or even threatened by him. (Happens when someone is very intelligent and has a wild sense of humor) But the bottom line is that if someone is in a tough situation, Dennis can always be relied upon to help. Kudos, Dennis.

DENNIS - 9-4-2010 at 03:49 PM

I didn't do anything, Howard, but thanks. All I really did was take a nice drive to Rosarito. I was due for that anyway. Now I don't have to do it again for a few years.

Bajahowodd - 9-4-2010 at 04:14 PM

Oh, such modesty. Fine. If you want it. Just be aware, that you're going to hear from me if I get in a pinch.

Dennis, I Really Heart Your Kind Efforts

Gypsy Jan - 9-4-2010 at 04:48 PM

I am not surprised by the "Don't Know Nothing." response and the unwillingness to put up the poster.

The prevailing attitude is, "Why get dragged into a gringo problem?"

I give you all kudos and my good heart thoughts to you for trying.

Maybe someone who didn't want to be identified will contact you later.

timgdixon - 9-5-2010 at 05:47 AM

Dennis,

Thought I would give a bit of an update to Mat & Missy, we did speak to an immigration agent in TJ yesterday and was told that without a US Passport they would not be able to travel below San Quintin and neither of them had passports so if this information is true from the immigr. agt. then does that not narrow our search area to north of there?

We also went to some agency CAPEA where the immigr. agt. sent us to file a missing persons report but they were closed until monday so we did not complete that mission.

Also a friend of a friend went to the Atty. Gen. in Ensenda yesterday and filed a report there and I have a case # but can't seem to locate it at 5:30am but when I do i will post it.

I know many of you have spent your time and money helping us and I want to be able to reimburse any of you for that, just not sure how to go about it. You folks have BIG Hearts and are extremely kind and compassionate.

Morning, Tim....... Sounds as though you,ve been busy.
One thing first...don't post your case number. Send it to LL by U2U.

The travel limitation would probably be due to the fact they would need a passport to get a Tourist Permit. That would surmise their travel would be limited in range. I thought the line was farther north than that.
Mat and Melissa would also know of the need for a passport to re-enter the country, which they are supposed to have done earlier on foot.
Knowing the requirments as they must have, are they the types to test the system, twice?
Are we still assuming they are in Mexico?

They don't seem the type to invite confrontation with border agents.

I don't think this ordeal has cost anybody here anything, Tim. Forget it.

Take this statement with a big grain of salt .... it is not always true.

redmesa - 9-5-2010 at 07:16 AM

Just to my knowing....there is a military check-point between Tecate/Ensenada....Ensenada/?.....San Quintin/El Rosario....Guerrero Negro/....and several more points South. These young soldiers are usually very interested in cars and dogs because that is all they have for entertainment so I am sure they would remember this car and couple. They never ask me for my passport or even my FM3. They may ask others.

timgdixon - 9-5-2010 at 07:29 AM

Dennis,

Right now we can only assume they crossed into mex. on the 23rd because of the insurance they bought. When we exited yesterday I spoke to the customs agent who told me they had all been briefed and was aware and that all crossings on alert for them so if they cross he said they will be taken to secondary and we will be notified and so far this hasn't happened.

Of course they could be in the US but CHP has been notified and there is a nation wide missing persons alert for them, and the car, and thus far they have not had any contact with US law enforcement that we're aware of.

Would they tempt fate by not having a passport, you would think not, but then again, they haven't done anything by the book so I can't say.

Trying everything we know to do and in *good* contact with LL ;-)

Rosemaria - 9-5-2010 at 11:07 AM

Tim,

In the McStay family case they pulled the video at the border crossing and got volunteers to review it. I know your case doesnt involve minor children, but perhaps you could ask your police contact if they could obtain the video at least so you'd have it.

Grasping at straws here...if its not a good idea other ppl here will surely speak up. :D

Do they ask for tentative destinations when selling a policy? I think I would want to know where my client planned on driving if I were to underwrite them.

It is, most normally, false.

As a rule, army checkpoints are only concerned with drug and weapons search. They wouldn't be checked for documentation until reaching Guerrero Negro and if immigration were closed they could easily drive all the way south to Cabo.

Debra - 9-5-2010 at 12:25 PM

Or if they used the airport road.

k-rico - 9-5-2010 at 12:31 PM

I just had an idea. Driving requires stops for gas. Nomads in Baja could get a copy of the missing persons flyer and stop in their local PEMEX stations and ask the workers if they have seen them. A red Miata in Baja is rare and would probably be remembered.

So...a flyer with a picture of the car, or one similar, would help??

Debra - 9-5-2010 at 12:38 PM

true

the thing that worries me the most is their jobs.......they don't sound the type to be irresponsible enough to walk away like that.

[Edited on 9-5-2010 by Debra]

Rosemaria - 9-5-2010 at 12:44 PM

another IF - if they are even with their car.

Not adding up

Dave - 9-5-2010 at 12:51 PM

What puzzles me is that they would go to the trouble in crossing to purchase insurance, a responsible act, yet abandon their jobs and contact with family. Taken together, the two just don't add up.

I completely agree with you. Something is way fishy. They simply didnt have to return to US to buy insurance or get cash. Maybe buying insuarance was a way of throwing their family off.

I am very glad these kids showed up .... and I bet they had no idea they were being looked for in so many different locations but ..... they did NOT have their car (as I understand it) and that is what many of us had in mind, rather than their faces. Most amazing that they ended up precisely in the one town (CC) that none of us live in. Hopefully they are on a bus as we speak, heading towards el norte with passport in hand and relief in their hearts and remorse in their souls.

elgatoloco - 9-7-2010 at 03:05 PM

First let me state whole heartedly that the whole egl clan is thrilled that the intrepid travelers have been located and are safe.

Internet speculation scenario one:

Bought insurance for trip to CC.
Heard about mordida reports in CC changed plans to hitch?

Internet speculation scenario two:

Bought FULL coverage for trip
Decide to hitch down and then file claim of stolen vehicle so they can use money to replace window

Internet speculation scenario three:

Bought full coverage drove down made it as far as El Tomatal abducted by aliens car beamed back to states occupants transported to CC as punishment for not staying in touch with families.

I hope they do get back to the states safely with big news that they got married! Be hard to be mad at them after that.:saint:
