US Reel super caster?

Santiago - 9-5-2010 at 08:24 AM

Checkout this video here on a new-to-me low profile bait casting reel. Anyone use these yet? Cabelas has the #1000 on 'special' at $179, the pro version is at $249. I'm very curious about the rotating level wind in lieu of the eyelet that is standard on all other reels. The spool spins in the reverse direction, into the thumb, so that the line comes off the bottom of the reel. I'm nibbling......

I love baitcasters an like new ideas but the I seem to remember the levelwind feature,Penn had a surfcaster with it otherwise would love to try it out.

Might have to get a secound on the house first tho:lol:

I watched the whole video just to get to the "bread and butter" part where they would actually show someone casting with the darn thing....pretty disappointing....

I'll stick with a good, old fashion Newell or Penn mag.

I'll continue to use my Penn's, Newell's and Abu Garcia's. All great reels and you can always get parts for them years after they are manufactured!

bigboy, Beware of the new Abu Garcia reels. Bought a new one, used it twice, the handle fell off. Tightened it up, it fell off again. Somethings missing in it? They're made in China! Gonna see if they'll honor the warranty.

Since you're nibbling. I would steer clear of those 525mags. They're fragile and break down easily. Hi's Tackle, our version of the Longfin, won't even carry them any more because of the complaints. But they cast spectacularly until things go wrong.

They also have plastic gears, and every Abu I have ever used in baja...the level wind froze up...Which is fine, since I'd just pull it off, seal the holes with silicon and use it as an openface reel which I prefer anyhow.

Not all of them.......This one has brass ones!

Yes, the saltists are being compared favorably over the 525. I've got both of them. The saltist doesn't cast as well as the 525 but is a much more powerful reel. There is no comparison in my opinion. The saltist is built like an avet.

It's OK t feel bad for me, there are lots of reason to do so (Mindy, please ignore this)
However, I have not actually bought one of the reels, I was just wondering if anyone had one of these and their opinion.
