Calamajue wanted

mcfez - 9-5-2010 at 12:54 PM

Any good folks out there have some Calamajue photos?

Skipjack Joe - 9-5-2010 at 01:01 PM

Fishing photos or the Ken Cook offroading type of photos?

I have been discouraged from going there in recent years due to the drug traffic going on. By the people at Cocos and Gonzaga. They told me that I might get held up and have to 'donate' all my gas for their needs. So beware. It's no longer the place described in 'King of the Moon'.

stimbo - 9-5-2010 at 02:22 PM

It's a quiet place now.... the fish camp is gone. Creepy quiet. There is primitive camping available but as Igor alluded to, beware. A couple of years ago I came across (driving by in my truck) piles of large, plastic wrapped bales of "something." I didn't hang around to ask the guy that was standing sentry on a nearby rock what were the contents. I acknowledged his presence and continued north. This was in that boulder field between Cocos and Gonzaga. That said, in forty years of traveling around Baja, I've never been hassled, heisted, or bothered, ever. The people of Baja have been nothing but gracious, friendly, and helpful. That was the only instance that was overtly suspicious. Good luck out there. Jim

Gene Kira modeled his book's fictional village from Agua Verde, south of Loreto... but being fiction it could have been any place in Baja...

In a way, that cove is similar to Puerto Calamajue!

You didn't specify which Calamajue (mission, mill, arroyo or port)...

Here are the mission photos and data: http://www.vivabaja.com/missions1/page8.html

How do you know?

He told me it was Calamajue.

David K - 9-5-2010 at 06:37 PM

When he autographed my book, he told the group there it was based on Agua Verde... and if you open up your book to the map facing Chapter 1... of the area of the cove shown on the locater insert map between Loreto and La Paz, you will have no doubt that it is Agua Verde... and his fictional name for the village is given as Caleta Agua Amargosa, B.C.S., Mexico ... BCS.

Skipjack Joe - 9-5-2010 at 06:45 PM

Oh... You're right. I checked it out. My bad. I could have sworn he told me it was Calamajue when we met. He was still in the process of writing it back then. Said he was inspired by the shark fisherman that lived in that cove. Perhaps he changed his mind during the writing. Oh well.

David K - 9-5-2010 at 10:50 PM

It's all good... perhaps he changed the location after he went on south to Agua Verde and Calamajue was his first choice!?

That is still good author history Igor...

Calamajue fish camp.
Looking for road conditions and the ocean front

SWMSMB - 9-6-2010 at 08:36 AM

Skipjack Joe,

Great photos. Love the roosterfish foamer. We are also planning a 4 day weekend in mid-Oct down to Gonzaga/Calamajue. Thinking of doing a loop in from Puertocitos and out thru Catavina. Given the drug traffic you alluded to, best to avoid the road out to MX1 altogether, or just avoid Calamajue? I would welcome your and anyone else's thoughts.

let me say this one more time, that is one LUCKY kid you got there! he's always got a grin on his face. good job, Amigo......

Nice photos...

About 27 years ago, Graham Mackintosh doing his walk around the coast of Baja had some interesting writings on the camp and people of Puerto Calamajue... Read 'Into s Desert Place' http://grahammackintosh.com

Bandits are the least of your worries...... just go for it. Serendipity is a good thing.

mcfez - 9-6-2010 at 08:30 PM

Rumors rumors and more rumors. Every freaking town has drug deals. Has crime. We all know this. Why dread on it. If you are so concerned about the wilds of Baja...perhaps you need to lock yourself up in your home. Calling folks names aint cool either....drama queen was not aimed at you directly. Put you gun back in its holster.

Everytime someone asks me about if I am affraid to go to Baja with all the crime and killings, I ask them if they are affraid to go to Los Angeles... more crime and killing there... and it happens every day!

motoged - 9-7-2010 at 10:27 PM

David,
A year or two ago you clearly stated on BN that you were taking a break from Baja due to such issues...glad to see that you are still ripping up the beaches ;D

I, for one, have greatly appreciated your Baja info over the years....we just don't vote the same way

motoged - 9-7-2010 at 10:35 PM

Macfuzz,
I suggest that you DO go to Calamujue....as I fully believe Coco's first-hand accounts of Calamujue smugglers, their murdering a local a handful of years back, and their practice of robbing unwary goofs arriving at their drop-off .

Coco has an interesting enough a life he doesn't have to make stuff up.....

I would love to see your pics of Calamujue.....please give us your up-to-date status of that deserted fish camp....

Mr. Wiggy Wiggle...You neighbor killed three kids

mcfez - 9-8-2010 at 11:51 PM

Here's one of hundreds of news articles from your town in wonderful Kamloops. Before you run your mouth about this and that being so bad...look in your own backyard.

CTV.ca News Staff
Date: Thu. Apr. 17 2008 10:21 PM ET
The prime suspect in the murder of three children in Merritt, B.C., will remain in hospital in Kamloops indefinitely after being admitted in the early-morning hours on Thursday.
At around 4 a.m. Thursday he was taken back to hospital when investigators decided he needed more treatment. Police would not disclose why, but Schoenborn was then transferred to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, B.C.

I know Coco too. Have been there too many times. Yep....he has no reason to make up stories...so it must be you. Strange...there are some folks living there....according to others.

Oh.....will you wiggle your buns as you said you do in a earlier post of yours? Wiggy Wiggle. What other pony tricks you do?

This is the last response to you...I am not going to muddy up this forum as you have so much ..judging from reading your past posts. So go for it....if you wish...and look like an idiot that you must be.

We're heading in this March, in a matter of fact. Now with the travel time greatly improved (the road)...it's a good time to haul the young ones down there. I was emailed by someone here saying that this is a good spot for snorkeling...going to check that out as well.

Have a box load of stuff (clothes) for the old man (Coco) to drop off too. Several of the kids (16yr) have never met him, and it's time to do that. I got to admire Coco toughness out there!

Best snorkleing / spearfishing

TheBajaKid - 2-9-2011 at 09:24 PM

The north side of the cove is the best for snorking.
Theres a good number of rock scallops that are a short dive at low tide. fishing from a small boat is best to the south the first set of points are real good for big lepord grouper and schools of Sierra,Yellowtail, and barracuda. youll catch triggerfish, hog or (parrot fish), spotted bay bass, ribeara cabrea, even halibut.
Gulf Grouper or bacceta, shark, and gold spot cabrea if you know the high spots. Dow the coast to the south there is a white mountain, in front is some good WSB fishing.
Calamajue is the most diverse fishing grounds on that thing we call Baja.

March 29 we should be arriving at our house in Campos Ocotillio (San Felipe). I hope to invite any Nomad withing the area for a outdoor camp Bar B Q at the house....all the trimmings served up. Details of that will appear here at BN in a few weeks from now.

On day 5 or 6 of our stay.....we are heading for GB and Calamajue for a few days.

Great... About when did the fishing village abandon the place?

The graded road was built to there from Laguna Chapala first (~1982?), before a branch went north to Gonzaga (or perhaps the grading south from Puertecitos terminated there ~1986 (at what would become Coco's Corner.

Before '82, we came up through Calamajue Canyon... as that was the main route for Mexico #5!

TheBajaKid - 2-10-2011 at 09:35 PM

I was born in 81' but ive heard alot of stories of the old road.
as far as when it was abandon as a fish camp Chuy and chuy jr. and there
family had the rights to the commercial fishing for years they moved to Mexicali
in 07 i might be wrong. Over the years of going you never knew what you would encounter. Some years it was a gost town no teacher only 2 families. One on the beachand one on the ranch 1/2 mile or so off the beach along the hills to the north.
The Family there who adopted my dad in the early years was Lupe his wife lupe and the children who as they grew they ventured outward for better means to live. The old man has passed now. The wife and most of the family live in Guerro Negro.
Other years the beach was packed, one year it was the rock scallops another was sea cucumbers, then sand scallops, sometimes nets ,others longline. each boom was exactly that, just a boom . after all the scallops were gone so were the divers and so on. Like i said one year nobody the next it was in need of a store it was so packed.
Im sure its just time before they make there next gold rush there

Thanks for sharing your story of Puerto Calamajue...

If you haven't yet, try and get a copy (from the library or purchase)of 'Camp and Camino in Lower California' by Arthur W. North. It is his trip through Baja in 1905/6 and he talks a lot about 'his friend' Dick Daggett who had operated the gold ore mill in Calamajue (across the arroyo from the mission, just before the road drops into the arroyo, southbound)... Dick (the grandfather of Reuben Daggett of L.A. Bay) was at Puerto Calamajue waiting for a ship to arrive with supplies when North rode into Calamajue Mill/ mission.

TheBajaKid - 2-11-2011 at 09:02 AM

I will have to start looking for that book.
La Paloma was the last mining comapny to work that area.
I have a couple rocks that were giver to me where you can see the vain of gold running across the rock they came from the same area.
