comitan - 9-6-2010 at 09:18 AM

After driving the Baja for 28 years I finally did it, hit a cow going north of La Paz, on our way to Asuncion luckily its a Toyota Motor home so was able to drive home. It was circumstance the Cow was Grey, the weather was grey, the car that stopped for it was grey. BAM.

woody with a view - 9-6-2010 at 09:25 AM

so you swerved around a grey car to hit a grey cow in the grey fog? glad your okay! how's the cow? did the cops make you buy the cow or pay the owner?

Howard - 9-6-2010 at 09:32 AM

Was it a cow or a steer?

comitan - 9-6-2010 at 09:33 AM

It was on the highway, no federales the cow was Laying in the field chewing its cud when we left.

comitan - 9-6-2010 at 09:39 AM

90K north of La Paz, we are now going out to Tecalote and go fishing it will get us there.

woody with a view - 9-6-2010 at 09:46 AM

i was under the impression that if you hit/kill a cow it was your fault and you had to pay the owner for his loss.

Well have had a chance to look, needs a new hood, right front fender & related, windshield, luckily we were not going fast. Now ready to unload boat and fish.

Osprey - 9-6-2010 at 11:23 AM

fISHGUY I know you're in a hurry to be a UNIVERSAL NOMAD but in your haste to suceed don't forget that some of us don't count all your posts. Especially ones like in this thread where you haven't even bothered to say "and that reminds me" or "and I just thought of this too" or "and furthermore, now that I think of it". Give the others a chance -- I'm just saying....

comitan - 9-6-2010 at 11:27 AM

A lot of good info fish.

DENNIS - 9-6-2010 at 11:42 AM

In Loreto, mid sixties, there was a meat market on the square. When the butcher got wind of an animal killed on the road, he would close up shop and go get it. Man...that meat was tough.
It was about that time Rival brought out the first crock-pot I'd ever seen and it was just the answer for that tough beef, but you had to leave it in the pot all day.

BMG - 9-6-2010 at 12:04 PM

Glad to hear that you and Carol, and apparently the cow, are okay.

And that's no bull.

Iflyfish - 9-6-2010 at 12:16 PM

Oh, that reminds me of a story........

Oops

Sorry this happened, bummer, you had a great trip planned. Hope part are readily available and glad you are going to get some time in on the water.

People ask me why I have a cow catcher on the front of our rig, unusual for up here.

Glad you guys are ok. Never can tell when one of those bovines becomes suicidal!!

Oh geeze louise...people always say here...it's not IF you'll hit a cow...it's a matter of WHEN. It happens to all of us who drive in baja alot....so sorry amigos. We were really looking forward to your visit...dang....happy fishing.

Pompano - 9-6-2010 at 01:26 PM

You have not really lived until you've hit a high-shouldered bull moose..

...and wondered how much of him will come over the hood?

(In reality a lightning bolt did this one in..)

No wonder you hit the cow with that camouflaged SUV how is the cow suppose top see you?

Cypress - 9-6-2010 at 02:50 PM

Maybe the "Deer Alerts" would help, they're little gizmo's that stick to the front bumper and make a high frequency sound when the wind rushes through them. At least the if the cow looked in the direction of the vehicle, it's eye's would shine at night.

torch - 9-6-2010 at 03:01 PM

yep I was a passenger in a truck driving at night and all we could see were their eyes. Nope it was not fun, especially since I was the only one who did not want to be on Mex 1 at night. 5 close calls ( 1 really close - we looked for hair on the corner of the bumper ). The waves were pumping at least

I try to tell the know-it-alls, that not all obstructive bovines wait on the shoulder and then mosey out onto the pavement. I have somehow missed three or so that came out onto the pavement on a dead run and couldn't be seen because of brush.

Hitting a steer dead on is not my best option. I believe I would take a chance on flying off the shoulder and chance a rollover. Seen too many engines shoved back to the front seat for my comfort.

woody with a view - 9-6-2010 at 05:30 PM

never fly off the shoulder. EVER!!!!

Dave, I was in a whimsical mood when I painted that Surburban...plus I have to blame my background of growing up on a ranch next to the Mandan Souix pony soldiers.

It came from an old, old joke you've probably heard once or twice..as have most people our age.

The Joke:

One day an Indian boy asked his father why they have such long names?

The dad answers, "Well, son, it's tradition when an Indian baby is born for the father to go outside and name the baby after the first thing he sees ... Why do you ask, Two Dogs F--king."

A buddy named Matt told me that joke the first time around..He's a Souix with a good sense of humor.

--Funny story about that particular dog cartoon...

We were way Up North in Saskatchewan hunting snow geese. Coming out of a local pub one night we stood next to the dogs to yak a bit. A couple of pretty Canadian gals came out of the pub walking towards us. One of them pointed at the dog cartoon painting and laughed..holding her hand up to her mouth in mock shock.

I said.."So.. you like my retrievers, miss?"

She smiled back, "Well...One looks more like a receiver than a retriever." ;)

I love a quick wit.

Close, Iflyfish ...ranchers mostly around our parts...we did grow quite a bit of alfalfa, though..and some 'other' strange plants. The kind that reminds you of burning leaves in the fall. Does anybody do that anymore?

cowhump.JPG - 33kB

shari!! Land sakes, girl...why, you make me blush!

Pompano - 9-6-2010 at 07:48 PM

..and here comes Bess to join in the action!

shari - 9-6-2010 at 07:49 PM

the cow that was hit when I was a passenger jumped out of a ditch onto the road so fast there wasnt even a chance to put the brakes on...totalled my truck...no insurance. It was just north of Bonfil...a notorious cow area...yup driving at night...we just had too fun a day at the beach in Mulege and were heading home to GN...that really sucked.

The worst part was we had a neighbours kid with us...nobody hurt but we were pretty shook up. The scariest bit was trying to warn cars coming fast about my truck in the oncoming traffic lane by waving a towel...I was so worried someone else would get in an accident by hitting my disabled truck. We grabbed a bus for home and I was truckless for a good while.

Wow...strange stuff, indeed, fishabuctor. I also have a friend dubbed Two Dogs..a boat name I helped give him a few years ago. In his case, because of his two German shorthairs. A chukar fan for sure.

On the death of the person in Alaska, my sincere condolences. As you may know, the highway from Anchorage to Homer sees about 250 moose killed a year. We recently had one bull high-step the railing and run right in front of our motorhome..missed him by a hair..literally.

Had a girlfriend go completely under one in her Mazda Miata..so she said.

I too, have lost acquaintances over the years from collisions with game on highways..always at night. Everyone from my area has had their share of road kills..both animal and human. We learned as kids to watch for the eyes and learn the habits of game on roads.

I'm a lucky exception..having hit and killed only one large critter in my 58 years of driving.

(I started driving a truck at 8. Unlicensed of course)....:saint:

Scary! Glad you guys are OK.

We had a near miss one early foggy morning heading south from GN on the long fast stretch to Vizcaino about ten years ago. I drive a bit slower ever since.

Pompano - 9-6-2010 at 09:07 PM

During one long drive from eastern Montana on The High-Line, Highway 2, to northern BC, we counted 272 road-killed deer and antelope. The smaller bodies we did not count...raccoons, skunks, porkies, etc. It's a tragic side of life along our highways. We all try to pay attention and save our wildlife..and livestock... but sometimes these kills are unavoidable.
