Large sized saltillo tiles?

hdn2mx - 9-7-2010 at 06:09 PM

Hello all,
I have a house in Pescadero, north of Cabo, close to Todos Santos. I'm considering using saltillo tiles to tile under a large palapa we have but I'd like to use a larger tile like 16 x 16 or 18 x 18.
Does anybody know of if those sizes are available in Cabo, San Jose del cabo or La Paz and if so, do they deliver?

Thanks for any info.

been doing saltillo since 1981 and have never seen bigger than 12"

i am thinking larger sizes if done in the traditional manner may be too susceptable to curl in the cure.

instead of larger look into a classic diamond dot pattern using octagonals and dbl spear points. the pattern is avail from saltillo importers in phx so it is avail elsewhere too.

La Chosa tel. 624 146-0922 near the airport in San Jose ( address: carretera transpeninsular s/n San Jose Viejo km 39 )has the 18" saltillos and they were on sale about 2 weeks ago as they are having a slow summer. If they are not on sale they will bargain so make sure and give them a lower offer than the advertised price.
There is also a place in La Paz on the right hand side driving from Pescadero that has saltillo look alikes. They have a big display of saltillos and clay products on the street near the segundas. Sorry I cannot remember the name. They are made in Mexicali and are darker than real saltillos.
La Chosa will not deliver but they have contacts who will deliver for you. I paid 500 pesos for delivery to TS.

You actually have some fun shopping in front of you. When I bought the stalled construction project in Mulege, now known as Casa Granada, I bought and used both Saltillos and a harder glazed tile. The look of Saltillos is great, and so is the regular maintenance. You have to keep them sealed, and they are not as tough as other tiles available in the Tijuana marketplace. Nearby Tecate is a manufacturing center for the genuine article, but my suggestion is to shop around Tijuana tile shops, and find what you like, and truck it on down.

Thank you for all your input.

After checking out the web site for Quinta Lupita in La Paz, it looks as though they may have exactly what I'm looking for, not to mention a huge assortment of other items as well.

If anybody needs saltillo tiles around the La Paz area, this place looks insane.

They also have other tile types, sinks, toilets, etc....

Thanks again, RT
