Fake Saltillos

I couldn't pass this deal up on Craig's List: 200 for $17, factory 'sealed' with gloss. Now what? I don't like the color, it's very uniform. Has anyone tried to stain these to get a more rustic, funky look? I have a 180 sq ft patio in Baja that I hope to use these so I can experiment on quite a few. Acid stain, maybe?

I'm thinking that because it is sealed, I may have to color some seal and brush that on?

Just pour a little water on one and if it absorbs, you should be able to do the same with stain.
If they're sealed, they won't absorb anything.

I think I'd rather have a dirt floor than go through all that.

just have us over for a party and we'll slosh around some wine, tequila, tecate, gin, vodka etc. for a real nice variety of stain.

I was thinking the same thing, nothing like a little party to forever change the look of your saltillos :lol:.....dt

they will get stained over time. old sealant will breakdown with time. if you want to speed up the discloration, just don't apply any new sealants in future.

Try installing them as is and let foot traffic wear through the factory seal a bit (probably not necessary as the factory seal is still slightly porous). Will not take long at all. Then try a dark stain applied for a very rustic adobe clay look. The more coats you apply the darker the look. Also use a contrasting grout to bring out the rustico look.

The important thing is does SHE like it? ;D

contrasting grout works wonders...what about that acid etching colour stuff someone talked about here way back when? would be fun to apply when in an altered state....as woody says...I'm just sayin...

BajaBlanca - 9-8-2010 at 10:53 AM

too bad you didn't like it - sounds like it was a sweet deal. and now it sounds like a lot of work ???? you can always re-sell it on Craig's list ... I'm just sayin' ...

Just got back from the concrete supply house and they said no way - all their stuff will not work on clay products??? Found a supplier of stain made for saltillos, Aqua Mix. They also make a stripper.

They are all identical is size/shape and have the exact same color. Home Depot sells them, or used to anyway. Also thinner than the hand made ones. They are clay but I'm sure it's not from anywhere close to Saltillo. Maybe not even Tecate.

I had to stain some bricks to match older bricks for a room addition, and used a thinned wood stain. I dipped them in a tray filled with the stain. Before I came up with this idea - which worked very well - I searched for concrete stain products. They're out there, but in limited colors. The worst case - $17 - isn't too much of a loss.

assuming they are only sealed on one side, install them upside down and then dry brush and splatter contrasting stain to acheive vieja look.:light::light:
