September is National Will (Testamento) Month in Mexico. What this means, in practical terms, is that you can go to a Notario Publico and have a will
drawn up for half his/her usual charge. In the two cases I checked, that meant they are now charging P750 instead of their usual P1500 fee.
If one goes to the Government Archivo offices (here in La Paz, the office is located in Fidepaz on Abasolo, beside the Tourism Office as your leaving
town to head North), they will do it for free. Supposedly, that is for anyone, regardless of nationality.
Furthermore, there's a new program sponsored by the Mexican government, in which they will keep a second copy of your will on file in the Archivo
office. Probably helps keep all parties somewhat more honest. I don't know if this is just for this month, or if the program is permanent.
The program isn't being widely promoted, so you may come across people who don't know about it who should. Don't dispair, keep trying.
I would have announced this earlier but was on a road trip and just got back. Sorry. Now, go out there and get that free will done!BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 9-9-2010 at 08:32 PM

When we (myself and my two partners) formed our Mexican Corporation, our Notario strongly suggested we each have wills, which we all did. He also
said that our US wills should not name anything we have/own in Mexico and vice versa. If you don't own anything of value in Mexico, and have a US
will, I don't think it matters...Santiago - 9-10-2010 at 10:51 AM
