some specifics, please, Tecate south thru Blvd 2000

Bob and jane - 9-10-2010 at 02:30 PM

As I am designated navigator and am prone to getting lost in malls, I'm hoping I can get a few specifics on the route south from Tecate on Blvd 2000. Sorry, I know the maps and directions are a constant here, but I am still unsure. Once we get on either the toll road or the free road heading west toward Tijuana from Tecate, will there be a sign for Popotla or Hwy 1 so I don't miss my turn off? Anything to keep my eye out for? And once I get to the coast are there signs getting us back on Hwy 1? Thanks so much from a navigationally challenged navigator.......................
We have taken the road from Tecate to Ensenada dozens of times but are avoiding it this time due to construction.

I have a GPS track posted on GPS Exchange web site that you can download if you are a member. Otherwise I could email you the track if you want.

Bob's got a good point, but let me explain.
I don't know. I've gone the other way a bunch of times, but never Tecate to 2000 to hwy 1.
I'm sure there will be a Blvd. 2000 sign when you get to it so take the way that points you toward the ocean. It's pretty much as simple as that.
The toll road is 16 miles between Tecate and 2000. Pricey at 87 pesos, but it's my choice.

Yes... It is well signed for Rosarito, Popotla, Ensenada, Blvd. 2000, BC 201 and even Mex. 2... one or all of those.

I have driven both the toll road and the free road between Tecate and the Blvd. 2000... and I will always go the free road now... It is all 4 lanes wide, only a few signals, passes the Tacoma plant where my truck ws made  and saves you beer money!

Enter Mexico at Tecate, drive straight ahead, down the hill to Hwy. 2 (along the town plaza/ park) and turn right... that's it! Go 15.6 miles (per AAA) to the Blvd. 2000 and take it to Hwy. 1 (free road) at Popotla... The drive to Ensenada... the free road is nice if you are not in a rush... otherwise you can hop on to the toll road at Cantamar (if the Puerto Nuevo on ramp is still closed). See the map and see that the toll road adds many more miles and is costly per Dennis.

So.....is the wait to get back to usa shorter than Mexicali?

Usually... but there has been a time or two Tecate was ultra long.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Since we'll be coming from Phoenix this trip we have been leaning toward Tecate. I like the Portrero campground and like the countryside south of Tecate. However, the construction stories just seem to be getting worse and worse. Tijuana is easy when we've been heading south from San Diego. Tecate is the choice coming from the east. David K has me convinced that even I can get us to Popotla from Tecate and since it's good for us old folks to try new things, I think we'll probably take that option. Sounds like it's sixes, so we shall see.
Really appreciate everyone's advice. 34 degrees and heavy frost this morning in the foothills of the Tetons. Will be glad to head home to BCS in just a few days.

Is the Blvd 2000 route preferred over taking Hyw 3 all the way?

Look at the map, the shortest distance from Tecate to Ensenada would be Hwy. 3.

The entire reason for the Blvd. 2000 detour are for those people who:

1) Don't want to drive through Tijuana to go south.
2) Don't want to travel some 16 miles on mostly dirt detours as Hwy. 3 is being widened from Tecate to Valle de las Palmas.
