sea turtles

Osprey - 9-12-2010 at 02:55 PM

In the last couple of nights more sea turtles have come ashore near our little beach. The tracks are small and that could mean they are the rare Black Sea turtle. I reported what I saw walking on the beach to the local FONMAR guy who said he would alert government turtle protection agencies in and near here -- evidently he did and some turtle cops are in the area now. He also reported the major site news to Alejandro, the head of Cabo Pulmo park. Alejandro has just moved his home/office to a house on my block so perhaps, through him I can learn more from time to time and maybe get in on the hatch 60 days from now.

boy, it'd be great if you could get a picture of a turtle - esp. if it is a rare one !!

Osprey, Thanks, for the info. They need all the help they can get.:)

the only turtles i can find to eat on line come from fresh water or are farmed.
anyone tried them? how do they taste?
they come in a tub, fresh cleaned meat parts...
and pricey too.
but i want some.

Come on down mike, we'll go out at night on the quad with a spotlight and get one for the pot. One added advantage to doing it this way is we'll also have eggs for breakfast the next morning:lol::lol::lol:.....dt

Are you trying to start another 50-page thread?

:D

I know the stuff tastes like chicken. Why don't you guys just go to Col. Sanders where you can order under the lights?

Sure, why not, it's hot outside and I don't have TV.

Tasty Turtle

It would be nice to see the Sea Turtle population recover to the point where they could be legally harvested again.

Prepared well, they were tasty and we enjoyed those few meals in years past. Different from Chicken.

Speaking of which, Little Baby Chicks are every bit as cute, maybe more so, than a baby turtle. So are Calves and Piglets.

Turtle tastes like tough pork with a fishy overtone.

And Bill... human babies are amongst the least cute.
That should start a new thread.:?::?::biggrin:

On the Cayman Islands, they have a turtle farm to repopulate the turtles and they do sell the excess or harvested turtle meat. It is very good if prepared correctly. I thought it was better than the turtle that I have had in Mexico. I have seen a lot of turtles in the water this summer and notice that the Mexican Pangueros see them but give them wide berth.

I love cahuama stew. Unfortunately so does everyone else. If you drink the blood you get a heck of an energy rush and some people actually pass out. The last time I had cahuama was in San Quintin and the guy cooked inside the shell with all of the required veggies over a fire near the beach. That was about 10 years ago and boy what a feast.

Tasting Babies ?

MrBillM - 9-13-2010 at 12:03 PM

Since Nobody (well, nobody I know of) is proposing to harvest Little Humans, their "cuteness", or lack thereof, isn't an issue.

The Cute Factor when applied to animals seems to influence how some people look at the edible issue. That, or the Intel Factor, which seems to pop up whenever Whales and Dolphins are the subject.

Since Turtles are pretty Dumb, Cute will have to do for them. A couple of my neighbors in Baja (along with us) LOVED to feed the Quail and thought the families coming through everyday were SO Cute. Their favorite meal whenever we dined at El Nido in San Felipe was Quail.

It disturbed my wife as she ate her Filet Mignon.

As far as taste goes, it's ALL subjective. Some, including me, found them excellent. Others haven't. I once had a girlfriend who hated Chicken and anything else (as she put it) that had "Feathers".

I do remember after a couple of Turtle meals back in the early 80s, we bought some at a Calimax in Mexicali. Took it home, prepared it properly (we thought) and it wasn't all that good.

Mexitron - 9-13-2010 at 12:22 PM

Surely you've not remembered "A Modest Proposal" by J. Swift?

Not So Swift

MrBillM - 9-13-2010 at 12:44 PM

Is long DEAD.

And, it was Satire.

While I'm sure that there are some in the Jungles somewhere who might still be munching Kiddies, I haven't seen or heard any discussion among those in Western Civilization who are considering the idea.

In the Literal sense, anyway.

Many of us have used the term "eating" when referring to other Tasty activity involving humans.

Who can forget James Bonds' famous line "You're the First Woman I've eaten". That involved removing a barb from her foot, but we all got the pun.

Osprey, I'm with you!! You are a good person! The rampant inability of some folks to stay on topic is maddening & kinda makes ya wish you had control of the delete or edit button to deal with the hijackers & turtle eating crowd, doesn't it? :(

Those were the days. Taste's alot better when eaten outdoors near the environment from which it came. Just saying.
