Proposed Port at K39

elgatoloco - 9-17-2010 at 10:28 AM

A few years ago the Santini family closed down a campo at k39ish. The last homes that were vacated were the hold out gringos on the bluff (read federal zone). Santini had claimed that he wanted to develop homes and if he did so the 'illegal' homes in federal zone would reduce the value of his 'legal' homes because of blocked ocean views. Of course most of my info came from the Gringo Gazette at the time along with some second hand bizz from some who new long time residents there. I am sure Santini and Torres, et al have a different viewpoint. Today I recieved from a friend who is a full time resident in Baja an email asking to sign a pettion opposing a new resort and marina at K39.

Have not found much info on line other then a discussion on surfermag. We used to have many great surf sessions in that area WAY before Club Marena,Gaviotas were developed. Progress?

WOW!! Is there a petition FOR this project? Whoooopeeee....... A marina right next door!! Of course we probably would get kicked out our little trailer park :( at K-38 1/2, Santa Martha!

It will never be built.

The Gull - 9-17-2010 at 10:55 AM

How are all the other "marina" projects of the last 20 years between TJ and Ensenada doing?

DENNIS - 9-17-2010 at 10:58 AM

They'll do it....right after they finish the Nautical Ladder.

What he said. Ensenada has been reduced to two ships per week (both named "Paradise"). Where will they find one to stop at Rosarito?

the NIMBY website presents a few falsehoods, and presents a simplistic argument with holes (interestingly the nimby website is in english, but i think the language in mexico is still spanish, at least it was last time i checked)
it does look like a sparsely populated area, and an area populated by gringos and retirees and people with above avarge income and part-time residency, so maybe it is a good location for a marina. a marina for transients, in a neighborhood with many transients. it would be economic racism if they put the rich peoples marina in a lower income neighborhood.

"economic racism". interesting concept. I'm going to have to think about that one for a while goat. :?:

And they pulled out the oldest anti-development line on the books:

"Last unspoiled stretch of coastline in Northern Baja"   In case they haven’t noticed this portion of coastline was spoiled decades ago. A little further south there are miles of unspoiled beaches....And the GPS coordinates are secret to keep it that way...Shhh ;)

Some other whoppers:
"The lobster nursery and general sea-life environment in Bahia Descanso will be completely disrupted by a project of this magnitude."

"This area should be considered as a marine sanctuary and allowed to continue to be the sealife nursery for the area. This will continue to promote a healthy environment and support the needs of the fishing and sportsman communities."

Like this tiny place is the only place lobsters and other sea life have babies....

However, my guess, like others have said, is that this project will never (or at least for a long time) happen.

They Won't

The vast majority of the ships making port at Ensenada over the past several decades have been those 3-4 night cruises which are more of a cover for a long weekend of drinking and gambling. The traditional Mexican Riviera cruises eek out a 7 day itinerary by hauling non-stop between either San Diego or LA and Cabo. What's left are the Hawaii cruises from the West Coast. Due to US maritime law, foreign flagged ships cannot transport passengers embarking from the US and disembarking in the US without making a foreign port call. Before the drug violence, a number of lines used Ensenada as a port of embarkation, busing passengers down from San Diego. Instead, they now embark in LA or San Diego and make a brief call on Ensenada, thereby meeting their requirement.

it's a proposed marina. the pic on the NIMBY website shows no indication of cruise ship terminal.

who would sign on to a cruise that lists rosarito as port of call?

BooJumMan - 9-17-2010 at 07:24 PM

Wow, yeah I remember surfing there when I was a little kid. I was just assuming they were going to put up another giant hotel.

Terry28 - 9-17-2010 at 08:14 PM

I believe the operative word here is "Proposed"......Nobody sane will be holding their breath on this one........
