Southern Migration!!!

bajabass - 9-17-2010 at 04:15 PM

Seems like this gringo can migrate this fall. One way. As some on this forum may know, I have been trying to sell my biz in the O.C., and escape the madness that is Southern California. On the same day, today, I shook hands on a deal to sell the last 20 years of my life, and my wife signed her contract to start work at the new IMSS hospital in La Paz!!!:bounce::biggrin::tumble::lol: By Halloween I shall be sipping Pacificos and watching sunsets from my new home, LA PAZ! Now to get rid of 5 tons of B.S. I shall no longer need or want:?: Adios O.C., Hello BCS!!!:biggrin:

DavidE - 9-17-2010 at 05:19 PM

Feliciadades a todos!

I'm stuck up in gringolandia and may be here another month waiting for the medical issues to sort themselves out. To all that are living well south of la linea and haven't been back in awhile:

Prices on goods up here have risen to a stupid level. I b-tched and moaned when I priced Thomas' English Muffins at 60 pesos a package but then up here reality slapped me in the face, four dollars eighty three cents at the cheapest el cheapo super discount market. A buck thirty five for a steenking can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup and a buck a pop for apples. Very few things are significantly cheaper than what I was used to paying in Mexico.

Regular gas at Costco today, $2.87 gallon. The near the freeway Chevron station dispenser pump cheated me so bad (short pumped as bad as anything I have ever had happen in Mexico) that it was hilarious except I got beat out of 40% of the gas that I paid for and what showed as being pumped on the dispenser.

In short IT SUCKS UP HERE so dash any thoughts of "homesickness" or other irrational emotions that you may have been nursing.

No chance of slipping a cop a hundred pesos to forget that he caught you way over the speed limit. They have green angels up here, when the towtruck finally arrives you are going to fork over all the green in your wallet.

Cypress - 9-17-2010 at 05:24 PM

Bajabass, Congrats and good luck!:D

longlegsinlapaz - 9-17-2010 at 05:35 PM

Not that I'm superstitious....but ya mighta held off on the announcement until the ink is dry! The buyer might not have as firm a handshake as you.:(

There goes 'errrrrrrr, I mean....welcome to the neighborhood!:tumble:

Congrats!

grace59 - 9-17-2010 at 05:58 PM

All the best to you in your new life. I am jealous! The rain has returned to Western WA and already I am tired of it and missing Baja so much that I could cry. I can't wait until I can spend more time then in my Casa...whatever Manana it is finally finished! Ahhh, Mexico Time, I miss it!

Congrats

Ahh, McFez...So well quoted! Someday when we are all in San Felipe at the same time we must meet for a drink.

cftlet - 9-17-2010 at 06:25 PM

Congrats on your new life. My wife and I just leased our house in ore. and are headed to our casita in Los Barriles in October. It is raining like hell here in Grants Pass and Iam wishing I was allready gone. Have fun getting rid of all that crap you dont need, it took me a full month and many trips to the dump (Im still recovering). Maybe we can have a couple of pacificos (seeing as we are retired and have nothing better to do except maybe fish).

BornFisher - 9-17-2010 at 06:31 PM

Hey John-- Please announce to the fish in La Salina, you are leaving and it`s safe to bite things with strings attached!
Congrats, it sounds like a dream come true!!
Wishing you the best, Bill

bajadock - 9-17-2010 at 07:05 PM

Bajabass,
Congrats. Hope you enjoy lightening your 5 ton load.

Craigslisting, Goodwilling and giving stuff away is still one of my favorite times during my migration here.
Salud

I was so excited typing my post, I missed the flagrant typo, in the first word!:wow: Just now saw it. Oh well, seems I don't care! LOL
I've read others post about how quick it seems to happen, when it finally does. This was like a Mike Tyson punch, or bite, Whoa! My wife left to La Paz 3 months ago, and we have not seen each other since. Don't ask about the cell phone bill, I try to forget!

Bajahowodd, I spent 50 weekends a year, for two years to catch her! Now I've spent 3 years trying to keep up with her!:wow:

bajafam - 9-17-2010 at 07:56 PM

Congrats!!! We are anxiously awaiting the day when we can spend more than a month at a time in Baja. We got our dirt, so now it's time to make things happen. 3 or 4 more years and it's all good!!
Disfruta!!!

bajabass - 9-17-2010 at 08:22 PM

Ah Legz, the eternal voice of reason! You are right of course, poop could happen still.:O A few pointers from you helped more than a little, and I think it is a done deal.
As a matter of fact, the first Tundra bed of essentials for La Paz are heading for La Mision about 10pm tonight!! :bounce:

Udo - 9-17-2010 at 08:41 PM

Where in La Mision?

Do you need any help?

bajabass - 9-17-2010 at 09:08 PM

La Mision is between Rosarito and Ensenada. If you know where La Fonda is, I am in the ejido above the river just south. Actually the real big stuff is going into storage, but thanks. Mainly fishing gear, a virtual truck load, some tools for car and boat service, and my computer and home electronics. If I run out of time or room, I promise a U2U! Oh, can't forget the wife's warmer clothes and a few boxes of shoes! It is really going to cool off in La Paz this winter!!!:bounce::lol:

bajabass - 9-17-2010 at 09:11 PM

I hope to see you soon Kate. Lunch at Jesse's!!

shari - 9-18-2010 at 07:53 AM

Oh man....that is just soooo fantastic...I'm very happy for you to finally get to make the leap...take the plunge...shed your past and look forward to a new and exciting future...way to go bass man!!! Sure hope we get to meet sometime...enjoy the ride.

Russ - 9-18-2010 at 08:13 AM

Please dont bring anyof that OC PC with you

[Edited on 9-18-2010 by durrelllrobert]

MitchMan - 9-18-2010 at 11:10 AM

Congrats Bajabass! I wished that I could retire in La Paz, but instead, I go there 10 times a year from OC, California. My wife won't have any part of Mexico. As you know, it takes two to tango if you want to live in Baja.

Just got back last night. Man, it's warm in La Paz.

Tip for those of you who spend lots of money making calls from Baja to USA. USE SKYPE. My wife and I corresponded for an hour every day on the Skype to Skype internet video calling feature. It's free! I go to internet cafe's and use their free WiFi for the required internet connection for my laptop. Calling any USA phone from Baja on Skype (VoIP) costs less than $.02 USD per minute! I put in $20 USD in my Skype account a month and a half ago and my account balance is only down to $16.23 USD today.

BajaBlanca - 9-24-2010 at 05:14 PM

MitchMan is right ... we talk to Poland and England and States and Brazil and all for free. We have never even deposted a cent into skype. The cennection is perfect, it sounds as if the person you are talking to is next door.

BjaBass: yours is indeed a fantastic story and we all look forward to meeting you. Congrats !!

bajabass - 9-24-2010 at 06:37 PM

To all who posted on this thread, Gracias Amigos & Amigas! Time to haul another load south! Shari, save some sushi for me, PLEASE!:P Pompano, you, I, co-pilot, and Dra. BajaBass need to go to Ray's, on me!:o Wiley, who are you calling a old Bozo and a sorry butt??? NOT, I am the luckiest Bozo around!! :tumble:
Russ, if you are headed for Laguna, stop by up here in Orange and say hello. Easier than me driving out that road to your house!:o My wife has family in San Bruno, so I will end up there, hopefully when the jurel are biting north of San Marcos!:tumble:

woody with a view - 9-25-2010 at 05:45 AM

good for you!

now, can you send me a list (privately, of course!) of all of the crap you are trying to unload? throw in some really low prices. you won't need the crap any more so give it to me for a song....

it'll help your karma for marrying a doctor and living in la paz!:P

bajabass - 11-4-2010 at 12:19 PM

Well friends, seems a major SNAFU ( $$$$ ), caused a delay in my migration! :fire: Things SEEM to be back on track, with a deal done at the end of November. Traded in the 09 Tundra yesterday, for a much less expensive 06 Tundra 4x4 Double Cab, only 44k miles, and clean! I had a hard time finding a white one, and had to drive to Toyota Of Escondido to get it. My 09 already had 30k on her, and needed new tires. All those trips to La Mision were adding up!:O
I have not seen Dra. Bajabass for almost 4 1/2 months now, and I'm really looking forward to her visit here for the week before turkey day. Then I fly to La Paz T-Day for 4 days! First time to spend a night in a house I've been paying rent on for 5 months now.
Seems most of my wife's family have had vacations in La Paz now, and 1 sister-in-law has already transferred her nursing job to Cabo. another is in La Paz now, job and apartment hunting. I love my wife's family, but I really hope my family doesn't decide to join us also.:?: :O
So, 4 days in La Paz, fly home and pick up the not so big check, load the truck and adios!!! With any luck, I'll get to hang the Christmas lights around the house and pool!!! :light:

baitcast - 11-4-2010 at 01:17 PM

I can feel the vibes just reading this, the excitment of it all,man do I envy you,I just never quite made it,will be following the move, best of luck to you.
Rob

bajabass - 11-4-2010 at 01:25 PM

Thanks baitcast! I may have time to figure out how to post the pics of the jacks and roosters I'll be catching from shore!!! Those vibes you feel are me trembling in anticipation!!

bajajudy - 11-4-2010 at 02:07 PM

Hey come on down!
It took us 6 business garage sales and 4 personal, but we got rid of most of it and what we didnt, went to good causes.
One thing I can tell you for sure.................you will never miss a single item!
Another thing I will tell you for sure....it doesnt take very long to build up your collection again.
Felicidades!

bajabass - 11-4-2010 at 02:39 PM

I've unloaded most items not traveling south. I will have a truck full of rods, reels, tackle boxes, and a little boat being drug behind! Oh, and Winston, The Baja Collie!!

Pescador - 11-5-2010 at 07:04 AM

As much as I loved living in Baja Sur, I did not realize all the little things that had importance and meaning to me that I had left in Colorado. So the last two trips I managed to bring a whole bunch of that stuff with me and now I have the best of both worlds, all my junk and Baja to boot. Of course I had to build a 1,000 sq ft garage to put it in, but hey the local builder figured that it was good for him too.
So welcome to Baja, and when you get north to San Bruno to visit family or whatever, be sure to stop in. (No, your boat won't fit in my garage)

bajabass - 11-5-2010 at 07:33 AM

Heck, half of O.C. think I'm looney toons!!:tumble: The other half KNOWS I am!! LOL
As far as O.C. PC goes, don't hold your breath. The "politically correct" climate is one of many things happily left up here.

bajabass - 11-5-2010 at 07:43 AM

I'll stop in and say hello for sure Pescador. I even think I know which house is yours. Pretty hard to not find what you are looking for there! I may just have to stop and fish a day on the way down.

bajabass - 11-5-2010 at 11:12 AM

I will contact you regarding the primary and secondary schools once I get a feel for the area soulpatch. Look forward to meeting you!

[Edited on 11-5-2010 by bajabass]

BajaBlanca - 11-5-2010 at 07:18 PM

you know Bajabass, "family" in Mexico just as in other latin countries, inlcudes not only bros and sisters, but cousins, second cousins, aunts, uncles and friends who are close enough to be called brother or sister, aunt or uncle or even mom/dad. it just makes life all that much richer, I think you will find.

If you ever visit la bocana, and come t our hosue, I have a bulletin board fiiled with photsos - on the right is les's kids and grandkids and on the left is a gazillion photos of all my relatives. it is amazing to see the difference. and it is not that les is any less close tohis family but we Brazilians are just sooooooooooo much ore involved with each other's lives. In a really good way.

well, let me recant a little, not always so fun , but most of the time YES ;)

good luck with the moola, may it all come together end of November !!

bajabass - 11-16-2010 at 10:20 AM

I know what you mean Blanca! I am the oldest of six, plus 2 "adopted" sisters, a dozen nieces and nephews, assorted aunts, uncles, ect. Mrs. Dra Bajabass flies in to TJ on Thursday, for a week. First time I will have seen her in almost 5 months!!!:P We fly back to La Paz on Thanksgiving, and I return here on Monday the 29th. Then it is just shuttle the remaining stuff to La Mision, and take a looong drive south!!!

BajaBlanca - 11-16-2010 at 04:33 PM

so Thurs will be a big day for you - congrats on getting to see her !! Have amost wonderful Thanksgiving .... you have a lot to be thankful for, all your efforts have panned out !!

bajabass - 11-16-2010 at 04:51 PM

Have a great holiday yourself! If I stop in Asuncion for that panga, I'll stop by!

BajaGringo - 11-16-2010 at 05:28 PM

Congratulations! Being half nuts is a definite plus to living down here. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. But I am 7/8 nuts...

BajaBlanca - 11-16-2010 at 09:07 PM

please stop by if you go to Asuncion !!

maybe we shall see you in la paz, since we have to go there sometimes ....

bajabass - 12-2-2010 at 06:35 AM

So, after almost 7 months, 5 with Dra. Bajabass already in La Paz, I am now UNEMPLOYED!!!!:bounce: My shop is sold, and for the first time in over 20 years, I won't be the one rolling up the bay doors. :( NOT!!!:bounce: I did my last alignment yesterday! On my own truck. A set of leveling Bilstein front shocks, KYB rear shocks, new exhaust system, and 4 new Bridgestone Dueller A/T Revos, and the Tundra is Baja ready!!
2 weeks of shuttling stuff down to La Mision, and I will be in La Paz before Christmas!!! This has been a rough deal, and I want to thank all my Nomad friends for both help and encouragement. Believe me, kind words and deeds have made this an easier row to hoe!! I wonder if the tackle shops are having any good sales??? :o

BajaBlanca - 12-2-2010 at 05:18 PM

yahhooooooooooooooooooooo

congrats .... scary and wonderful all rolled into 1, I'm sure.

imagine, you can now remove Orange , Ca. from your list of locations !!
