Simvastatin

Does anyone know how to ask for Simvastatin at a farmacia. I am about to run out and I don't have time to go get another prescription at Kaiser. I figure I'll grab some in Ensenada on my way south.

Another question: Do I need a prescription??

Just ask for it by that name. Make sure to go to a reputable pharmacy. It has been in the news that this is one of the latest phony drugs made in Mexico for distribution in the US.

try looking for "Simlo" or "Simvotin"- the generics. The post above it true, so be careful.

Thank you. Do you know of a reputable pharmacy or should I go to one of the chain farmacias??

Do like Vandenburg says, that drug is very common in Mexico...just make sure of the pharmacy's reputation for selling legitimate medications.

I am currently taking Simvastatin, too. 20mg daily for cholestrol until it gets better..which is happening as we speak.

I get my mine at Ruben's Farmacia in Mulege...because he is a friend I have known for 20 years.

edit to say Opps...my dosage is not 40mg..it is 20mg.

If you can't find Simvastatin ask for Crestor...this came from my G/P. She knows I live in CSL most of the year.

Actually she would have prefered I use Crestor but Simvastatin was a smaller co-pay. You may want to ask your G/P if there is an other Rx you can use.

Simvastin is the generic for Zocor

Crestor is different and please be careful to not take one other than your doctor prescribed.

I take Simvastin, but John cannot take it---severe side effects, but he can and does take Lipitor. So whatever is working with out the side effects, stick with it.

I know I sound like I am preaching, but when one doctor changed John to Zocor he forgot to tell him to have a blood test in 3 months and after 6 months when he had the blood test, he had serious problems.

Another one is called Lipitor.

And none of these have any aproved generics. Mexico may feel differently, however.:lol:

We are waiting and hoping Lipitor will have a generic sometime soon, but Simvastin is the generic for Zocor.

Seems like they would be the same, but they affect different people different ways.

Since you are in Ensenada, you ought to consider going to Walmart. Seriously doubt they would be carrying fake drugs.

I started taking Simvastatin a little over a month ago and for the past week have felt mildly nauseous, weak and fatigued. Can anyone tell me if this could be a side effect of the drug?

I lowered my cholesterol to 170 in in 4 months from being in the over 250 range consistantlty for over 20 years. I did it with diet alone and I eat better and more delicious food than anybody I know. I love red meat and all other kinds of meat and I don't deny myself meat. I am also a good cook - that's part of it. I tried statins for a short while and they apparently reduced my physical strength significantly and permanently. I resented that, did some calculations, and came up with a great diet and approach that works with absoute certainty.

I am in the process of putting the specifics in writing; not finished yet.

The spanish name is "simvastatina". I've been taking a Mexican brand for 4 years. Blood tests indicate it works as well as American brands. No Rx required.

No side effects for me but make sure you get a blood test 3 to 6 months after starting and then periodically and the test measures liver enzymes. The stuff can be as hard on your liver as booze. If you're a heavy drinker, statins may/will just add to the liver problems.

I pay 200 pesos for 30 20mg tablets. Buy meds made in Mex. only. The bottle will say. You can buy meds made in other countries, such as India, but they are of dubious quality.

If you can lower cholesteral by diet, like Mitchman, of course that's the best. If you can't, you're on the pills for life or you accept the risk associated with high cholesteral.

Thank you all for replying to my query. I'm off the stuff for good. One of the great things about living in BCS is the excellent diet we have at our disposal here. We eat much healthier here than in the upper U.S. That's the way to go, for sure. Again, thank you.
