thief deterrent

desertcpl - 9-27-2010 at 09:19 AM

I think this has been discussed before,

I have a 07 Tacoma TRD, what would you recommend ,I know mine has the factory anti thief that would require a coded key to start the truck.

does any one use the Club, would like some feed back

Thanks

Phil S - 9-27-2010 at 09:24 AM

I used the 'club' for years on my 99 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup. Quit using it when I was told that all they have to do is saw or cut the wheel & they are off & running. Never had a problem in over 23 years of going down to Loreto area. Park smart. Be observant of your surroundings. And always lock your car. Good luck.

I like the mother inlaw ... .:lol::lol:

bajasammy - 9-27-2010 at 09:32 AM

That'll do it. Bob looks like he could put my whole head in his mouth!

My sister used to have a Lab/Great Dane/German Sheppard mix she named 'Bob' (after a neighbor she disliked). He looked like a King Sized Black Lab - best dog ever!!! Extremely protective of his 'family'.

The Club...
Yes...I used them for years. Better than anything else....for thief of INSIDE your car. Will not protect your valuables outside (tires, stuff in the trailer...on the luggage rack).

Just one tip....get deep under the car...and wire up a extra key to the Club!!!!! You be doing this :o if you loose the key chain...

I'll second that.

Short of the mordida thread, every now and then, security in Baja is a favorite thread.

I have 2 vehicles. Both have 2 alarms and 2 kill switches.

The backup alarm cannot be easily accessed, has it's own battery, will NOT shut off without a key. (Had one in an RV once and the battery went dead, alarm went off, bolts attaching the alarm rusted, took almost an hour to rip out, I threw the siren on the ground and beat it with a large wrench and it wouldn't turn off.)

So, the alarm is only good if you hear it going off. In some situations, alarms are ignored.

The kill switches will prevent the vehicle from started up and driven off. That's my primary concern.

A thief that can tow your vehicle trumps the kill switches though the alarm will be wailing as it's towed away.

Security is preventative, at best. I have peace of mind for what it's worth even though I am hyper-conscious of my vehicle's security.

A barking dog is the BEST security any vehicle can have though it has limitations.

desertcpl - 9-27-2010 at 10:30 AM

yes the barking dogs is best,, my mother inlaw barks at me, so think I will go with that

mcfez, one is enough for me ... can appreciate your wanting to share (at times)..:):) tag teams are tough..

With no mother in law present, maybe leaving the wife in the vehicle would suffice. Whaddya think, Les?:O;)

(Oh oh...I used to be Blanca's friend.)

Um (think quick)....Blanca, I didn't mean you. You're name is not Bob. :saint: (Oh Jeeze!)....Um, oh, and you are not a dog either.

Scouts honor, I had a neighbor who had a loudspeaker and a switch and I think a recording of the most godawful knocking you ever heard in your life. It delayed for about ten seconds but when it came on, WOW!

I just returned from Loreto in my '08 Tundra. I bought The Club for this trip and forgot to use it.

Tie her to the front bumper, leave her a bowl of water and last nights rib bone to chew on. Wish I could do that to mine.

Marinero - 9-28-2010 at 10:35 AM

For a real theft deterrnt, consider this: Many cars have electric fuel pumps with turn-over switches. An off-on switch can easily be wired into this circuit and the switch hidden near the driver's seat. If the car does not have a fuel pump, the main electrical feed to the ignition of some cars can be similarly switched. Not foolproof, but better than a club. They can be defeated in nothing flat.

Ya mean like the dog they tied to the bumper of the station wagon in the Chevy Chase movie National Lampoon's, Vacation.. or did you mean leaving his dead mother inlaw in that chair on the patio... in the rain...

Tying her on top was pretty cool too....

Thanks, had not thought about that movie in a long while...:lol:

MasterLock Starter Sentry

john68 - 9-29-2010 at 07:41 AM

I installed the MasterLock Starter Sentry on our Suburban and am pleased with it so far. It replaces the starter relay. For some other models, I think it shuts off the fuel pump.

tjBill - 9-29-2010 at 10:26 PM

People in Tijuana get creative when it comes to anti-theft devices.
The more anti-theft devices the better. Along with the club and an alarm with a kill switch. Some people remove parts making it impossible to drive the car; disconnecting battery cables, removing the alternator, etc.

The best security, of course, is a parking in a lot with a security guard.

wessongroup - 9-29-2010 at 10:49 PM

mcfez, he is a guard dog...

really funny, everyone was afraid of him...

asked him, Bob, "hey does anyone talk to you?", saw the tail wag.. and we became fast friends... then I gave him a good butt scratch.. and he is in "love" now...

Try and stop off and give him "doggie" treats ... his owner thinks I'm nuts as do others around there .... the dog could break my arm in a second.. and his mouth reminds me of two catchers mitts with "teeth"...

But, he is just showing how much he likes me... just a little chew.. with a couple of bites.. has broken the skin a couple of times.... but, then he has never gotten to chew on someone before... so he is just learning right now... good guy... wish he were mine... bit of a tank, but.. one of these for an old guy is not a bad idea.... or his pard.. a Rottweiler named Oliver ..... also one that is a guard dog that got jealous of Bob getting all the attention..

Those two in my Bronco... could leave the windows down..

Wooopsss. I didn't read further and should have. yikes. $500.00 smackers. I sent an email to the company in Arizona asking info. Probably worth it though. Have to go look in the back yard for another buried coffee can. don't trust them banks anymore. Besides, they don't encourage "thrift" savings anymore what with 1/2 to 1 % returns on investment.
Dreary day here in southern Oregon. Cloudy. Not warm. Can't wait for Nov. to come & we head to Loreto/Nopolo/Cabo & back for a month of warm (hopefully) weather & seeing friends

slimshady - 10-3-2010 at 11:49 PM

I have the live view gps tracker on my landcruiser in baja. It is alarmed also but if someone steals it I can locate it to the exact location on google earth type mapping.

philodog - 10-9-2010 at 08:38 PM

An easy and cheap theft deterrent on many vehicles is to pull the brake light fuse. The engine can turn on but the tranny won`t shift because it thinks your foot is not on the brake. Only works if the thief doesn`t know this trick.

bajalearner - 10-10-2010 at 05:13 AM

Good advice to have a hidden key. But why under the car? Why not hidden inside the car?

Hook - 10-10-2010 at 06:24 AM

I prefer the "club" device that goes on the brake pedal. Prevents the brake from being depressed which, on my Ford truck, disables the ignition and prevents the tranny from coming out of park.

Also, there is almost no clearance down there for cutting it.

Interchangeable from car to car, too.

wessongroup - 10-10-2010 at 06:36 AM

the BEST anti-theft solution... ride a horse.. that's still a hanging offense ...

May be that would help.. car theft.. becomes a hanging offense...

Would slow it down.. just string em up from the nearest light post...

Would also help the economy... rope sales would increase...

I had the Ravelco system installed on my 2003 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. It now only operates when a special apparatus and cannot be started and driven away.

Phil S - 10-10-2010 at 02:21 PM

I read the "device" website and found an email dealer/installer. Price was $469.95 'installed'!!!!!!!!!! I'm putting one on my 2011 toyota Sienna before heading south to Cabo this month. Peace of mind is worth something!!! I liked one of the testimonials about a lady was followed to her car, and when she got in he pushed her over and climbed in but couldn't start the car. He asks, "what the heck is wrong with the car"? and she responds, "it's been doing that lately for some reason". Sure sold me.
$469.95, and I bet I can get a reduction in the premium on my 'theft' part of my auto insurance policy in the states. Doubt if I could in Mexico, what with the $1,000.00 deductible on the theft part of the policy.
Weather here on I-5 exit #125 SUCKS!!!!!!!!! Sprinkles. Low clouds with visability maybe 1 mile. Can't wait to get to Loreto/Nopolo/Cabo next month.
