In the Valley of the Giants

mcfez - 9-30-2010 at 04:38 PM

There has been a few post from folks bout to travel down to San Felipe and beyond. Valley of the Giants, a forest of huge cadon cactii ......about 20 minutes out of town (south). I think...its a must do must- see thing.

Caretaker at the gate will charge you a few bucks to get in. Worth it. Be careful not to venture to far past this giant...the sandy road becomes deep.....4w or 2w with lots of sand experience.

The park is great. I was there about 12 years ago, and a friend was taking our picture. He had to back up to get the shot, and guess what he backed up into? We had to get the pliers.

Yo know... before the new road south from San Felipe, we went by those cardon cacti all the time shortcutting to the beach near Percebu from San Felipe... Didn't think much about them... maybe because we had seen so many in the desert further south?

When I first saw 'Valley of the Giants' sign along the new road... I wondered what was the big whoop... then I sang the Green Giant commercial song... Ho ho ho

The "Valley of the Giants" is about 8 miles north of our place. It's a great place to take a group of visitors in the winter when it's too cold for the beach. This was taken a couple of years back during a Score 250 race weekend.

The old road to Punta Diggs/ Punta Estrella area and down the coast to Percebu... That Valle de Gigantes is using that road now. Punta Diggs is the bump in the coast between old Rancho Persebu and Punta Estrella on the Gulick map.

Here is the Howard Gulick 1962 map of the area south of San Felipe:

They built the jet airport in 1974, but it was not open for nearly 10 years... After '74, we would sometimes drive the newly paved road to the airport, then drive down the south half of the runway and then onto the graded road that went from the end of the runway to join the old Punta Diggs/ Percebu road...

Here is my 1980 map showing that...

Always wanted to camp out there during a full moon and walk amongst the giants to see what they have to say.

Wonder if they'd care if you camped out there?
