Nothing says million dollar oceanfront homes and San Diego's top tourist attraction like a panga full of illegals landing. This group of 20 landed on Mission Beach Monday. The photo of them laid out against the seawall on the recreational Boardwalk is priceless and will really hit home. Maybe this will put some pressure on the Coast Guard to protect the US coastline. If the USA can blockade Cuba- why not Mexico?

SAN DIEGO — Twenty-one people suspected of entering the country illegally were arrested early Monday in Mission Beach after they came ashore on a boat.

The group was taken into custody about 2:30 a.m. near Ocean Front Walk and Santa Barbara Place, Border Patrol authorities said.

Nineteen were determined to be from Mexico and two were from Honduras, said Border Patrol Agent Steven Pitts.

Agents first spotted the small red panga about 2:20 a.m. as it was heading north toward the Mission Beach jetty, Pitts said.

All were arrested without incident and are being processed for return to their countries, Pitts said. The boat was confiscated.

In July, seventeen illegal immigrants were arrested after being dropped off by a boat at Black’s Beach in the third such smuggling attempt in a month.

Three days prior to that twenty-two were taken into custody as they tried to come ashore from a boat at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. On June 20, 18 people were arrested on the base after apparently being dropped off by a boat which was not located.

Gloria Allred, Thats funny, the pangas have in the
past made it up here to San Onofre, trestles.
One was shippwrecked on one of the Channel
Isles, I believe Santa Barbara Island.
I know the Border Patrol catches fewer illegal
crossers than a few yrs. ago. Have read of some
illegals from the US returning to Mex for
lack of work in the US

I was just talking to a man who lives in the trailer park in Popotla yesterday at Splash. Seems a lot of pangas head out very early in the morning. Must be a race, because he hears the starter's pistol a few times a week also!

Why? Because small wooden craft dont show up on radar. Coast Guard is relying on smell and shoreline patrolling to find these boats.

It has proven very effective. They get about $5000 a head for ocean smuggling..twice the price of a land crossing

I just remembered I was at the Oceanside Harbor ramp about 10:00pm fri and there were 2 large BP vans waiting for the guys that had engine trouble and ended up 40 miles out

Crazy money huh. And these people are poor? They think there are jobs in CA or what? You couldn't even PAY my Mexican relatives $5000 to take a 30 mile panga ride at night- let alone the other way around. So what's to stop terrorists from attacking Naval Station Coronado by Panga then? The US better get a handle on this- it's no secret smuggling route any more.

we found em!!!!!...these were the 20 tourists that were kidnapped in acalpulco last week....whew!...thought we'd never see em again.

Well- that would be $5000... in gas! Can you imagine Acapulco to San Diego by panga? No one is reporting finding them yet- so that is actually a good sign. You don't hide and feed 20 men for this long if you're not going to release them.

I was disturbed the Mayor of Acapulco is more worried about this impacting his tourism. He hopes a new PR media campaign he is starting this week will counter the impact of this incident. WTF?! How about solving the problem first?! You clean house before you invite company over, not tell them "Don't mind the mess".

Are we talking the gay thing again? The Mayor of Rosarito owns mucho real estate and has a vested interest in tourism after he leaves office. A few years back, during the time El Teo was terrorizing Rosarito- the Mayor and Teo would be three businesses away from each late at night having drinks and Tacos- one at the gay bar and the other at Macho Taco (you decide which one was where...). Everyone knew it, even the military- you couldn't miss the black SUV caravans and bodyguards. No one seemed to know where El Teo lived until after his arrest- then it became as common knowledge he had a house in Rosarito near Popotla all along. They are all in this separately, but together. They can't fix the problem- they are too greedy and the problem itself is too big and complex- so these PR campaigns pop up to whitewash everything and put on a happy face. It's all they can really do if they want to stay alive. And right after getting the money, comes living long enough to spend it. It is what it is. jmo

This has been going on for 2 years. I joked with my buddy about picking up a panga at the annual San Diego police auction. Interesting this particular event got more press. Yep, Popotola is the take off point. I wonder how many made it through?

Well....they've guesstimated around 12 million so far, although most come by land.
