Puerto Santo Tomas!!!!!

cjesme - 10-6-2010 at 07:59 AM

Do yourself a favor and take a step back in time. Yes, there is a fishing camp just like the ones you remember thirty years ago. Puerto Santo Tomas is it. Check it out, GOOGLE "Puerto Santo Tomas" and give your eyes a treat. Okay, the web-site says Resort, but in reality it is a laid back fishing camp just like you remember. Short on frills, but long on great fishing. We arrived on Saturday 10/02, met with Sam, and he gave us the the Grand Tour of the place. We arranged for a Panga for Sunday ($135.00), chose a cabin ( $25.00 per person), un-packed and got our lines wet on shore (nailed a Ling Cod) and just enjoyed the day. Sunday, Marcos (our Capitan), arrived with our panga at 7:00 and off we go. Twenty minutes later we are in fishing grounds and BAM, the action starts. The water is too cold for surface fish, but ideal for bottom fish. By 10:30 we were full-up and back at the ramp by 11:00. Juan and Marcos cleaned the fish and were a pleasure to be around. Please don't picture a fancy tourist place, it's not. You must bring you own bait (squid in candy), and all fishing gear. Sam's web-site is full of info. I know this blog reads like a commercial, but other Nomads can chime in and to verify or not.

It was a GREAT Trip!

Looks nice; is there a place to park a large RV? Food? Security? Beer? Kid friendly?

Nice report! Many others have had nice things to say about it over the years. The road in passes the first and second sites of the Santo Tomas mission (very little remains at both places). http://vivabaja.com/missions2/page8.html

Great place for kids and as for the road in, dirt one lane road for about 17 miles. Motorhome friendly but, only one road so you must share! You also must bring your own towels!! Low water pressure so no need for a shower! Gotta love the good simple life to enjoy!

The road to Puerto Santo Tomas/La Bocana this past spring and a view of the Puerto from our porch at La Bocana. Indeed, a step back in time..

We used to go there with a Field Science Club (80+ students) from high school every spring break when the road would permit. We stayed up on the bluff just north of the beach. A great time was had by all of the students, parents, faculty, etc. This was back in the early 70's while Mr. Gomez was still alive. Met Jack Smith and his wife once while we were there as well. Good times!

Great rainbow shot over the point BW.

I've stayed in a couple of Sam's houses over the years. Pretty basic but a good value.

In the mid 70's, I camped on the beach south of the river at La Bocana. One afternoon Mr Gomez rowed, standing up no less, across the river while singing opera. What a time we had with him for a couple of hours.

Thanks DanO,

that shot was the day after Easter Sunday (earthquake day)

By the time we got to Ensenada it was pouring and we on our way to San Felipe for a week.

We'll be in Bocana on the weekend of the 23rd this month if your around...
