Baja 100 and pre run

dizzyspots - 10-8-2010 at 11:49 AM

i see on the Tecate Baja 1000 site , that the route will go thru San Felipe to Coco's then south...pre running is open after Oct 7th....2 questions:
a) Is the pre running an issue for regular travelers (thinking Oct 18 and 22?
b) Anyone been down there to spectate in the Gonzaga area during the actual race?
any tips ?

Mike

i was in gonzaga for the race in 2003 and it was SPECTACULAR viewing.
might have to do it again this year after i check the course.
yippee.

the course map is not very clear that it goes thru the road at pemex and rancho grande store like 2003.
anyone with road experience can see where it goes actually and post a ref to the almanac road map? this looks like a job for DK?

Capt.Mikey

do you think the "pre-running" that opens in October will have any effect on our travels (Oct 18-23)?

naw...if you are going the right way!!! hahahahha.
it is a mad house out there my friend travel at your own risk no insurance will cover a trophy truck tangle and they will not stop - they have no brakes only about 800 hp!!!!!!!

Stay well away from the race. If steel doesn't get you the dust will.

Was down for the 2000 race. A madhouse. If you are hoteling be sure about reservations.

Dizzy: Prerunning shouldnt present hazards for travelers, but DONT be driving on Mex 1 during the race. Nutzoid aholes in chase trucks on the highway doing 90 with empty car carrier trailers bouncing all over the road. Ain't worth your life.

capt. mike - 10-9-2010 at 02:28 AM

thx DK but what i was hoping for is you take the course along gonzaga and blow it up on one of your maps to confirm if it runs the road in front of rancho grande's store where we watched TT at 100 + mph blaring thru HIDs smokin'!!

BajaWarrior - 10-9-2010 at 06:55 AM

Looks like the course will remain just east of the sulphur mine south of San Felipe. That's where we'll be for spectating. 4.2 miles from our place at Playa Hermosa.

Bajajorge - 10-9-2010 at 08:27 AM

Baja 100:?: Did the race get shorter?

shari - 10-9-2010 at 08:37 AM

Please use extreme caution on Mex 1 from now on...many have had close calls with pre running vehicles who tend to drive very fast on the highway making conditions extra hazardous as they come up on you FAST and pass fast too...lots more accidents during the race with pre running trucks zooming around and often towing trailers that weave all over the place.

Right, as there is no other road north/ south near Rancho Grande... those dumb runways cut across the older road south!

huh??

The Trophy Trucks will start about 11:30am (4 hrs after the last bike) and it's about 270 miles to Gonzaga Bay. It's also a fast course but with a 60mph limit on the paved hwys. So my guess is the first bike will be thru at about 11am. The first 4 wheeler at about 4pm. That's based on a 60mph average for both the bike and car. Frankly I expect the first TT or car to beat the bikes on average speed. But I haven't seen some of the sections that may slow down the cars more than the bikes. Three bikes that could beat the cars on spped are Kendall Norman 1X and David Pearson 7X and Colton Udal 8X. They are all factory riders, Norman and Udall on Hondas and Pearson riding with Mike Childress and Steve Hingefelt (sp) on a KTM.

I am really, really surprised that they are running on the new highway south of Puertecitos... San Felipe businesses must really have a lot of pull on Sal after the fiasco with the 250 a couple years ago!

I would have bet a run south in the hills east of San Quintin and either along the Seven Sisters or swing up to Chapala and Coco's Corner then south to L.A. Bay... :light:

thx for the map DK.

sounds like an afternoon at gonzaga will be big fun hope i can make it but work will mess that up likely.

David K - 10-11-2010 at 01:43 PM

de nada Mike!

TMW - 10-11-2010 at 01:51 PM

Yea that SF250 race really cost the town a lot of money and really for no reason except a power play and ego. Sal likes to run the same stuff, I think so he doesn't have to deal with new people that may want more. Running the hwy is pretty easy for him now especially with the tracker system. I'm sure San Felipe loves it too. I know a lot of chasers that are glad it goes to SF as thats about as far as they want to go. There are just over 200 entries so far and SCORE expects about 300 by race day.
