Duty Question

grace59 - 10-10-2010 at 09:37 AM

I will be going to San Felipe on Friday. Entering at Tecate. I am bringing with me some items to be used in the construction of my house: 2 Pex Water Manifolds, Three decorative canned light trims, and three faucets. The total value (I have the receipts) is less than 800US. Will I have any problems bringing these in? Is there a declare lane in Tecate? How do I pay duty there? I have my FM3 and so does my husband....will this allow us a certain amount duty free? Thanks for the help.

It would be a shame if you misplaced one or two of those receipts. Yep....a real shame.
You'll probably have to pay. The question is, how much?
That will depend on how the Tecate customs folks are playing the game. If they don't offer you a deal, don't ask for one.
Grace....a small tear of disappointment goes a long way with the male inspectors.

You're allowed a small amount, but that might not be the case with building materials. Be prepared to pay something.

PEX manifold? they barely know what that is in US and haven't a clue in MX. good luck finding the tubing and fittings you will need, let alone a crimp tool. (if you are bringing this stuff with you you didn't say so)

Some contractors DO know what this is. The tubing is already in. I have the same system in my house here in WA so I guess it all depends on who you choose as a builder and where you live. I'm just bringing the manifolds with me because they were cheaper here.

oops, I should have said they barely know what PEX plumbing is in California, not in US. Other states are more progressive or thier unions are not as strong.

If you use the Sharkbite fittings, you don't need a crimp tool

Generally the amount due is based on the amount you declare, not an arbitrary amount declared by the agent. So, expect to pay about 18% but the amount varies 10-30% based on certain items, fill out the form, often there is a self-declaration form you will find there and then go to to the verification officer to sign and present it to the cashier. There may be a deduction for having a fm-3 - who knows. You may be required to unload the entire car for inspection so be prepared and be pleasant.
